Problems with Analog Controls in Coin op

I have been playing a lot of Coin-op games lately and I use a Logitech Rumblepad with Analog joysticks (like a Playstation 2 controller).

The analog joystick is used to control your character in many (if not all) of these coin-op titles. The joystick is also used to substitute the light gun (Operation Wolf).

I am having a problem configuring my analog joystick so that it responds more like the joystick of actual video game cabinet. Right now, my joystick is so sensitive that it is almost impossible to accurately pinpoint my cursor location. In Operation Wolf for example, I cant' aim properly, my cursor just flies all over screen.

I know there are ways to adjust the sensitivity, but I haven't had much success with my attempts. Usually, I take the X and Y sensitivity all the way down to a minimum, but I don't see a difference.

I know there are a lot of you who use a gamepad like I do. Have you had any success in adjusting the sensitivity? Is it just my gamepad?

Any recommendations you can offer would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: Problems with Analog Controls in Coin op

if theres an option of "analog speed" then try that, if definetly takes a while to get just the right amount of control vs. speed

Re: Problems with Analog Controls in Coin op

It depends on the game.

For trackball games such as Missile Command or Marble Madness, set all sensitivities way down (to like around 5) to be able to get a sane control speed. From there you'll have to fine tune it to your perfect balance of speed and control.

For steering wheel games, when you push the stick left or right, MAME will measure the wheel's rotation with how much the stick is pressed and how far it can go. I don't think you can change this without using digital control.

For light gun games, you simply cannot use the analog stick. MAME measures the cursors position on the screen with relation to how the stick is pressed and how far it can go. For example, push all the way left, and the cursor will be at the left side of the screen. You either have to use arrow keys to drag the cursor around, or really fine tune your stick pressing skills.

This is the experience I get with my Logitech controller, same kind as yours but with no rumble.

Re: Problems with Analog Controls in Coin op

Thanks for the feedback Seahawk.

Out of curiosity, did you change your analog settings for the Roadrunner game? That's a damn good score that you put up!

Nah, I just used the mode change button on my controller to switch to digital control. From the game I would have to get that the stick the machine came with was way tighter than the analog sticks on my controller, I found using the stick impossible for this game. The d-pad works just fine. There are some seeds that require some wiggling to get to, so sometimes I have to switch to analog really quick to get them.

Re: Problems with Analog Controls in Coin op

Seahawk, I owe you one. I'm embarassed to say that I never knew that you could switch over to digital mode with the Logitech gamepad. That has made a huge difference in these coin-op games.Seriously, thanks.

That said, it's time to reclaim your Roadrunner score.

It's a pretty secret feature =P. If the stick were stiffer you'd have a pretty good arcade joystick =).

Ha! You're right about the joystick. It works OK, but it would be awesome if you could tighten it up somehow.
