Atari 5200 Star Raiders

I have been searching for this game (Atari 5200 Star Raiders) online for years and finally found it here. I was able to hack my Wii and play it for a while but the transition to using a keyboard was difficult and unpredictable. Is there a guide to using the keyboard to play here that shows each function for the keys used in this game, or do I just have to test the keys to see what happens? TIA!

Re: Atari 5200 Star Raiders

After choosing a play mode the controls are listed in the center right of the page.

For Atari 5200 the controls are
Z C V D and 0-9
and the D-Pad

Press Tab to open the menu. From there you can redefine the inputs.

Re: Atari 5200 Star Raiders

Yes, in a way. That is the overlay for the original 5200 controller. What I am asking is what does each function correspond to on a keyboard. How do I turn shields on? Which are the fire buttons, etc, using a standard keyboard? Thank you!

Re: Atari 5200 Star Raiders

You got Retro Uprising to work on your Wii?? How?

By D-Pad I meant to say keyboard arrows.

Enter is start
Z is fire.

This is what an Atari 5200 controller looked like

Sort of like a calculator. Some games had overlays that you would put on top of the numbers to label them. Like this.

The top row of the image is 1, 2, 3 on the keyboard.
The second row is 4, 5, 6.
The third is 7, 8, 9.
The fourth is C, 0, V.

C - is the bottom left corner of the overlay. If you press it then all of the numbers will control your speed - words in yellow. 0 is the slowest. 9 is the fastest. Speed is the default mode the buttons start in.

V - is the bottom right corner of the overlay. Pressing it makes the numbers control the commands - words in white. So press V and then 6 to turn on your shield. V and then 8 to engage hyper speed.

He was just running a 2600 emulator on his Wii, not RU.

If I remember correctly, I believe it was an Atari 800 emulator, but definitely not the 2600 because that version of Star Raiders was not what I wanted. I think the 800 emulator was able to support the 5200 version of Star Raiders, but it was glitchy.

OK, I just played my first game and got to Rookie class 4 at Novice level. I am on a laptop with a keyboard that is not ideal for gaming, so I took a better USB keyboard, and labeled it as per your instructions. Unfortunately, the external USB keyboard that works fine with other apps, but does not for this game. All I could do was start the game and nothing more, so I had to play with the laptop keyboard while looking at the marked keys on the USB keyboard and I kept hitting the WinLogo key by accident. Do you have any idea how I can get the external keyboard to work? Maybe if I can disable the native keyboard, the other one can take over? Thanks again for your help as it did make it possible for me to get through the game. Years ago with the original joystick I attained the highest rank. I think it was Star commander Class 1 or something like that.

Re: Atari 5200 Star Raiders

Start the game
press Tab on the laptop keyboard.
Use arrows to select Input This Game.
Then press enter.
Then for each of these

Start, 0-9, P1 Button 1, *, #, Ad Stick Analog X Dec, Ad Stick Analog X Inc, Ad Stick Analog Y Dec, Ad Stick Analog Y Inc

Use the arrows to highlight each button, then press enter. On the USB keyboard press any key that you want to assign to that button.

After you have changed all the inputs press escape to close out of the menu.

Are you saying I can or must re-map the keys on the external keyboard just for this game? I will try to follow this, but not sure I understand. Once I start the game if I don't get the shields up right away, I am killed so I hope going into menu mode pauses it. Thanks again!

Re: Atari 5200 Star Raiders

My assumption is it is counting your second keyboard as a completely seperate device.

If that is true, then yes you need to re-map the keys. You only need to do it once. So if it works, then press F5 which will reset the game and you should be good to go.

If it doesn't work then maybe try remapping keys on your laptop keyboard until you have a layout that is ideal on it.
