Trackball too slow..

Hello guys.
Today I received the Happ 3'' trackball which I purchased because I got sick and tired playing missile command and centipede with the mouse.
but when I hooked it up the cursor is too slow even when I changed the sensitivity to the maximum value of 255 !! (and I usually play with 50 % sensitivity). I also tried tweaking with the digital speed but to no avail.
I don't want to change the settings of the windows mouse!

Is there another option?
Cheers

Re: Trackball too slow..

In theory changing the windows mouse speed should have no effect.

Probably the wrong moue driver. Open Device Manage. Find the trackball. Right click and select update driver. Select Browse. Click let me pick. Uncheck show compatible. In left column select Microsoft. In right column try several of the Intellimouse or trackball drivers until you find one you like.

One of these might help. They accomplish the same thing, you only need one of them.

Re: Trackball too slow..

Are you changing the digital speed from within the MAME menu? That usually works for me. Have you tried "tweaking" it at least +20 or even +30? I think Kong is right about changing the speed using the Windows control panel. That won't help. But from within MAME, in the Analog submenu, try really jacking up the speed, not just the sensitivity.

Re: Trackball too slow..

Dear Kong and Tim thanks for the quick replies.

Tim,yes I did change the digital speed from within the mame menu and it actually did help to a certain extent but it's not normal I think because now I'm using 255 % sensitivity (max value) and 255 % digital speed (again max value) and still it does not feel quite right whereas before I used 50% sensitivity and only 1% (minimum value) digital speed and it was near perfect. something else is wrong I suspect..

Kong,I did what you told me and changed the driver ( I chose "microsoft" and "Microsoft USB IntelliMouse Explorer" so what now..?
Am I supposed to do something further? because the situation is the same.
when I right click on the new "Microsoft USB IntelliMouse Explorer" driver and try to change the settings it changes the windows mouse settings.
Some one told me that the slow cursor thing is a matter of changing the DPI values but I did not find the location of it yet..

Cheers guys

Re: Trackball too slow..

The MAME Digital Speed settings should just affect digital controls (keyboard) emulating analog controls (mouse). Shouldn't have an effect in your situation.

The Happ trackball doesn't have it's own specific driver, but all computer hardware requires a driver. So Windows makes a guess on what driver to use. It's possible it guessed wrong. Do you remember what driver it was using before I told you to change it? I am also guessing on which one to use. Trial an error of going through all 10 or so intellimouse drivers and then testing a game after each one might work. Also try MS HD-Compliant Mouse.

Try plugging it into a different USB port.

Enabling Mouse in MAME uses DirectX. DirectX by design is not supposed to use windows mouse sensitivity, but sometimes it bleeds in. So mouse control panel shouldn't matter.

Enabling lightgun instead of mouse in MAME bypasses Directx but still enables the mouse. For testing, you could download MAME and enable lightgun instead of mouse and increase mouse sensitivity from control panel. Also you could try enabling mouse in the newest version of MAME and find out if the problem has something to do with our version or with your hardware.

DPI is dots per inch. It is a combination of settings in the hardware (some mice let you edit this, Happ does not) and the mouse control panel sensitivity, which is disabled by DirectX. So you can not change DPI.

But you can change the USB polling frequency which is how often windows asks your mouse for an update. Use one of the links I posted above to do so. Windows default is 125. Most computers can easily handle 500 which is 4x faster. If you have a very powerful CPU you could go up to 1000.

If you have access to another computer see what happens if you try the trackball on it. Also if you have another non-RU, DirectX enabled game, see if it works in it.

Re: Trackball too slow..

I've got a Kensington Orbit Optical trackball, which I guess MAME must interpret as a mouse, because both speed and sensitivity have a noticeable effect. I just tried Missile Command, moved the digital speed from 10 to 43, and it was basically uncontrollable it was so fast. Not telling you to get another trackball, just passing along my experience. It's also got a cool dial around the ball that can also work as a dial controller.

Re: Trackball too slow..

Kong, thanks for the very elaborate answer.
I did try plugging it into a different USB port but it did not help.
I will soon try to test the other drivers -btw do I have to restart the pc after each one ?
It's a shame that Happ won't let me edit the DPI values.
I'll probably won't try to change the USB polling frequency as I do not want to stress my old CPU.

Tim ,hi
Two months ago I wanted to buy a trackball and your "Kensington Orbit Optical trackball" came to mind BUT THEN I came across the "Sanwa Opt Trackball Pro 5 Button Red Ma-tb38r" and could not resist it- I thought to myself hey, I got the Sanwa joystick and the Sanwa push buttons so I might as well have the Sanwa trackball. It is a beautiful thing ,red and about 2'' ball diameter and does the job but the only drawback is that this ball won't keep spinning like the real arcade trackball. but soon enough I fell in love with the trackball action so much that I wanted a real arcade heavy 3'' trackball and bought the Happ one. I have it for a couple of days now and I'm starting to love it after A LOT of tweaking and fine tuning.

Cheers guys

Re: Trackball too slow..

Sounds like a great controller. I don't do enough trackballing, so I went value over quality. I'm sure yours will more than outlast mine. You reminded me - I need to get some Sanwa buttons and mod my Qanba stick. I recently played a month-long tournament, and I killed 2 buttons. Good luck!

It's not a common feature. Only high end gaming mouse do it through hardware. Normally they just rely on windows control panel which mame disables.

Hi Kong
Thanks for linking my photos.

I kind of getting used to it. It takes some time but I'm getting close .
The thing is that before I had the Happ trackball I used the Sanwa trackball as a pc mouse as well as a gaming controller but now the Happ is strictly for gaming because of the difference of speed. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too..
Thanks buddy
