Processor/Motherboard help

Hopefully Kong will chime in, but my kid wants to upgrade his rig. Right now he's got GeForce 1070 8gb Gfx, 16 gb RAM, and an AMD FX-4300 Quad Core 3.8gHz. He's having issues with one game (Stellaris) but wants to upgrade. Motherboard is cheap - MSI 760GMA-P34(FX). He's insisting on AMD upgrade, but damn, he's at 3.8 right now, although it's 4 cores.

I'm processor ignorant. Would a newer generation AMD (has to be AM4 socket) with 8 cores but lower speed (say 3.5) be better than existing quad core 3.8? What's more important, speed or cores/threads, or cache? Any help GREATLY appreciated.

The reccomended hardware for Stellaris
https://www.systemrequirementslab.co...tellaris/12835

Reccomended CPU https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...enom+II+X4+850 - Passmark score = 3548
Your current CPU - https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...4300+Quad-Core - Passmark score = 4662

Reccomended GFX https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/g...rce+GTX+560+Ti - Passmark score = 3537
Your GFX - https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?id=3521 - Passmark score = 11017

Reccomended 4GB of RAM. You have 16GB.

It looks like you should have solid hardware for this game already. What is the problem you are having? If it is load times it might be the hard drive. Might also be a software problem - reinstalling the game or Windows might help or fiddling with settings in the game or updating all drivers.

Here are most of the AM4 CPU choices
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/socketType.html#id18
At about $100 you see slight improvement. At $200 you see significant improvement. But this probably isn't where your bottle neck would be with this game.

I wouldn't spend $100 on upgrading your CPU. If $200 is in your budget then I would concider a new CPU but would rule out other things first.

Thanks, Kong. Just as I thought, we put together a fairly nice gaming desktop, especially with the 1070 GFX. Swapping out components seems a totally unnecessary risk to me, with little to no gain at all.

Thanks again.

Re: Processor/Motherboard help

Man, I would hate to be stuck with that CPU. The AMD FX was outdated the day it was released, slower per clock than the previous generation AMD Phenom 2.

Stellaris is a strategy game, and those games typically hit the CPU hard. Here's a link that shows CPU performance in a recent popular strategy game:

Total War WARHAMMER II ? GPU/CPU | RTS / | ? GPU

You can see how slow the AMD FX chips are, sitting at the bottom of the chart. The AMD Ryzen chips just came out this year, and are much faster per clock, almost matching Intel. If your son stubbornly insists on gaming with AMD, get him a Ryzen, as even the slowest Ryzen can be twice as fast as what he has now.

Thanks Pat. I actually looked at some Ryzens. I'm not paying $500 or more for top of the line, so the ones I saw were reasonable, but the speed was lower, but the cores were double. I think I may just do that - swap out for a newer gen AMD, since he won't touch Intel.
