I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

First of all my PC just crapped out and I don't know how to fix it. I've been having issues with high end video games crashing my PC(sometimes bluescreen sometimes just total restart). Usually the PC loads back up and works fine if I don't try to play another game. This last time it crashed and then didn't want to fully load back up. Sometimes it would just restart a couple times and sometimes it would seem like the PC loaded up but the monitor was off(not turned off though) and no display showed up. Now I can get to the desktop but then it will randomly crash with distorted colors on screen(like it would when playing a game). The only tech related info I can give you guys is the morse code like beeps it gave me, 6 beeps. From what little I can tell that seems to be a video card issue.

My other issue is recovering a formatted drive. When my other PC was about to die I accidentally deleted some important stuff when I formatted the second drive(partition?). I used a demo program to test if recovery was possible and it did find the folder I was looking for but of course I had to pay almost a hundred bucks for the program, so I didn't. Is there any free way to do this? Is there a simpler way?
Btw I'm currently using this half dead PC to type this and it was a struggle to even get online(lots of errors and it's bare bones from a full reinstall of the OS).

Any help will be very appreciated. My newer PC is a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7. I can't get other info because of the crashes.

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

It really doesn't seem like a HD issue. Like I said it does work but it seems to crash when graphics are needed, which includes browsing the internet apparently. Either way I hope it's not that because of the cost. I did back up important stuff though just in case.

No offense to you but I'd rather not call strangers about my PC problems. I don't even like calling people I know. Would it be too much hassle for you to post some ideas here?

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I know a little about computers and resurrecting them from near death

Hmm, does indeed sound like a graphics card problem.

-Step one is to check the drivers and make sure they are up to date
-Problem 2 may be the heat sink/fan on the video card. If it's dead the card will overheat and cause problems.
-Problem 3 might be spyware/malware/a virus screwing with your files or an error somewhere in windows(windows can fix itself with certain procedures)

Can you explain the HDD question a little more(I'm confused)?

-Did you completely reformat it?
-Are you looking for files you deleted by accident?(they may still be on the HDD just marked as overwritable)

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I am not very tech savvy but I believe all the drivers are up to date. I cleaned my PC recently, including the fan for the card. I can't be sure that fan is even working though because of the angle it's at and I'm kinda afraid/unsure how to remove it. Would that fan being dead cause the PC to shut down while browsing the internet, like RU? If it's spyware I don't know what I can do to fix it if it won't even stay on long enough to download and run something. My McAffee scans found nothing(came with the PC).

My old PC had a partition(at least I think that's the correct way to describe it). One half was my normal everyday use and the other was basically storage. I just want one specific folder on there and that demo program found it easily so I know it does exist. I already know not to put anything on that drive( I think it was D?) or else it will overwrite it.
Yes I reformatted it. Without a recovery program it's empty.

If the fan on the video card is not working, yes it can cause the computer to restart. Since it's giving a signal to your monitor it's always working, with no fan to cool it off your system fan/cpu fan go into over drive and if they can't keep up your computer will reboot or shutdown.

Other options are the system fan itself isn't working and the entire computer is overheating.

Since you said you recently opened it. Go back in and make sure everything is connected. It's very easy to knock something off the motherboard without noticing.

I don't know how to remove the fan anyways so I can't help there.

Do you know the make and model of the video card?

If not(assuming you can get it to run long enough):
1)Right click on desktop
2)Properties>Settings>Advanced>Adapter
3)You will see the make, model, and size of the video card
4)Go to that companies website and see if new drivers are available

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I suspect it's the fan on the video card. Games were crashing recently but my wife was able to play sims3 for a few hours before it crashed. That crash was the bad one. I think maybe the fan finally died and before it was just not working fully.

The system fan seems to be working. I think it was spinning when I left the case open and turned it on but I wasn't really looking for that so I didn't scrutinize it. Besides that when I had crashes before it was only for games and just browsing the internet never caused a problem. I could leave the PC on like that for hours on end as well.

I don't wanna remove the fan just the graphics card so I can reseat it and really clean the fan if it needs it. I tried a little bit but I didn't want to force it.

I don't think it will stay running long enough but I'll try it tomorrow and if it does I'll report back. Either way I did access the graphics card that way and checked for updates very recently and it said it was fine.

I'll look into that link later tonight thanks.

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

Basically I didn't want to type it all out,, especially if you just let us know that it was a hassle or almost impossible to get back onto the internet. I helped Tails with his PC Problem, and I have a degree and certifications in computer repair.

I was giving you the number figuring friends helping friends from RU. Otherwise it's up to you, but it's just easier for me to figure out what's going wrong with the PC that way.

The beeping signified a Motherboard problem with the translation of data to a specific object or an error message that is a fatal error. Most likely, your internal graphics card burning out.

You can figure this out with a few steps, if I get around to it I'll let you know if someone doesn't cover it beforehand.

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

@unclechicken-
1. Not the issue.
2. I don't think it's that. I forgot to mention but I did use a program that tests the temp of your PC and it said my motherboard, powersupply, ect were in the normal range. If I recall correctly it couldn't or didn't check my graphics card.
3. I did try cleaning it but the angle is bad. With compressed air I was able to spin the fan and I didn't see dust come out. I assume that means the fan wasn't blocked.
4. I would have no idea about that but my PC is basically on default settings when it comes to advanced stuff like that.
5. Not sure how to check that.
6. I never saw anything about a thermal event. Months ago my PC was kinda dirty inside but it only took a couple blasts of air to remove the dust, nothing too ridiculous.
7. Yes it has said that and I've tried both with no luck. It searches and cannot find a way to fix it. I even tried submitting the event reports to MS and it said that help server was down. Thanks for nothing MS.
8. Not that I know of. I type a lot on this keyboard(I'm using it on this walking dead PC right now) and I never notice anything. Is there a good way to test that?

Thanks for all the ideas.

@thetedster- I totally understand why you wouldn't want to type it all out. It's not really too hard for me to check the internet I just had trouble booting this PC up and I'm a little worried it could die on me too. I stopped using it because it has serious problems that seem like it's hardware not software. If you were to type it out I'd be able to read it in a day or two at the least.

Really I mean no offense when I rejected your generous offer of over the phone tech support. I'm just not good with meeting new people and over the phone is worse because I already don't like talking on the phone in general. It's nothing personal I promise. I've turned down similar contact with RU people I've known for years if that gives you an idea of how introverted I can be.

If my internal card is burned out is that something I can replace on my own or would I need to send it in? I'd much rather do it at home.

It does suck to have this issue but honestly I'm in no big rush as long as I can still browse the internet. Whenever you have the time and motivation just post it here, thanks.

If you recall, I recently had a video card issue, but with a much older computer. I'm running Windows Vista on a 3+yr old computer, but cleaning the fan pretty much fixed the problem.

Your situation sounds different, DB. Like perhaps your computer doesn't have proper amount of RAM or something.
Of course, it did crash during Sims3, which isn't exactly Call of Duty. Video cards are relatively cheap, so if you can afford one, buy one.

By the way, does anyone have recommendations for good video cards under $100?

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I only read the first post.

For the blue screen issue, this software Blue screen of death (STOP error) information in dump files. will help you determine the cause. Once you know the cause you can try fixing it.

Run that program and report back what it finds.

The morse code depends on the motherboard brand/model. Do you know what it is? Do you have the manual for the mother board? Because it would tell you what they mean.

For the formatted drive problem. Try this Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

If that doesn't work I can give you more complicated instructions.

Do not use the disk for anything else. Don't read of write to it and install the recuva program to a different drive. The more you use the drive the less likely you can recover files from it.

Yeah, it's really simple. Little more then taking the old one out, poping the new one in, and installing the drivers.

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I just wanted to update this in case anyone was wondering about it. Because of Skyrim I've been postponing working on this. My older PC is working well enough for the internet so that helps too. But in the next few days I'm gonna motivate myself to finally get this resolved.

Btw I tried that recuva program and it worked great. The only problem I had was finding one specific folder. I think it's still there but the way the results showed up I couldn't identify it. I'm gonna try the other program soon to see if I get better results.

The main reason I bumped this was to ask another question. If my newer PC won't stay on long enough to run any programs or check any properties do you think safe mode will have the same results? I assume this is a stupid question but can all this troubleshooting be done in safemode?

Also what is the specific info you guys might need to help me. So far I think it's just motherboard info, graphics card info and that's it?

If it's a hardware problems then safe mode won't do a whole lot for you, as it's still got to access that piece of hardware. If I remember you live in my state at least DB. I live on cape, if you get too frustrated and want some physical help.

Re: I have a few PC related issues I need help with.

I really do think it's the graphics card being dead or dieing, would that be considered a hardware problem that would be the same in safe mode?

I appreciate the offer for in state tech support but I doubt it will come to that. I have a couple people I can bother first before I need to go that route.

Welp, the offer is up there. I'm starting up a local comp repair business within the next month or two.

If you have an integrated video card, as well as one in an expansion slot(AGP, PCI-e, etc), you can remove the one in the expansion slot and see if the problem goes away.

Like others have said if it's hardware and it's overheating safemode won't work long enough either.

If the power supply is crapping out, you'll have to buy a new one. You'll need to know what voltage your motherboard needs(it's in the range the current power supply provides and is on the power supply somewhere). you'll also need the right size one to fit back in the case.

If it is indeed the video card, you need to know a few things:
- What type of expansion slot does it fit in?
  1. PCI-e: If it's a newer computer this is most likely the type you need
  2. AGP: Less common now, but still out there
  3. PCI: Unless you have a really old comp you won't need this one
-How much power does it need?
If you put one that needs say 110v from the power supply and your power supply only puts out 100v it can case problems and will not run properly

-Size:
Likely not really a factor put you have to make sure it will actually fit in your case. Some cases need a half size card if they are very narrow. Sometimes they are too chunky and will not fit right next to something else in the next slot.
