Buying a new PC/MSN help

1. Today, my sucky laptop's MSN would say my account couldn't verify it's contacts, and loads of other problems. Basically it's as slow as a dino now, takes a good 10 minutes to do anything like shut down, restart load msn, etc. and has a nasty habit of freezing for a bit. I asked my Mom, and since I deleted two Touhou games equaling over 2gb I basically shot it. I'm doing a defrag now, so hope all goes well. Anyways, I am on her computer which is like x100 faster than mine, and I still get the msn error, and it only does that to that username no matter WHERE I sign in. My question is what happened? I didn't do anything odd, and I also saw on the web a few others had this happen as well. Anyways to fix this?

2. I am buying a new PC, hopefully a gaming one. When I bought my laptop it wasn't a gaming PC at all. Seeing now I am playing a lot of games with my friend Despair, it's time to get a Gaming PC. Now I looked at one and it's $3000, it's called Alienware, however what do you guys suggest? Main things I am looking for is a really good processor, a 1tb HD, and lot's of memory (comp I found had 8gb of memory) anyways, reccomendations? Thanks!

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

For the MSN thing see if they have a tech support email.

For your old computer, formatting and reinstalling windows will do wonders.

For the new computer, sorry, I don't know much about that high end of a machine.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

My buddy has an alienware pc and loves it. I never used it myself though. I generally don't play high resource games on the computer. I definately recomond buying a tower pc over a laptop for gaming. even if they have the same system values (mem, proccessor, etc.). Gaming is very hard on the laptop itself. (over heating, power comsumption.)

I logged into it just fine today, not sure if it was a bug or what...

Well, my mom ended up fixing it.. apparently I had almost a GB of cache I needed to delete with disk clean up, and the fact I didn't put one of my 512 Memory in right. I just got a Gig of memory and all it did is freeze, my mom put it in.. and it works. xD

I think the 800+ mb of that stuff Disk Cleanup got (I also did a defrag) really helped. I can say I never did Disk clean up because I was too lazy to do it.. Defrag I might of done 5 times max in 3 years that I have had it.

I found that out the hard way, on RU games would just over heat my laptop or even lag. I play online gaming with my friend a lot, and well it's become apparent I need a gaming PC. I never honestly expected to play more than NES games on my comp, but with technology and RU evolved even more it's a good choice to get it.

You don't need a $3,000 computer to play games on RU. I have a $500 laptop and it is over kill for any game here.

I have a $500 Dell laptop. I thought he was talking about new computer games. I've even emulated PS1 games with no problem. But would not try to play the new games coming out for computers.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

Cache is temporary storage. When space in that folder runs out then things in it are usually auto deleted. If you increase the amount reserved for it then you can have more temp files before they are lost. But that means you have less space for non-temp files. Usually temp files are useless and it is OK for them to be deleted often.

Your computer will run better if it always has at least 15% free space.

That was actually an example of how my laptop sucks, due to being on my work week again I haven't tried it with my 1 gig memory boost. I was mainly wanting it to netplay with my friend. Apparently no matter what I try we cannot net play. and having a tb HD and a 8 gig memory sounds really good.

I was actually thinking about that, the new games that is. I'll do another custom thing for Alienware right now.

Grr, well that's what I chose, came out to less than $2,500.

I really just want a fast computer where I can do multiple things (i.E. play games listen to music be on msn, download stuff faster) and have a lot of space not worrying about if my computer will shut off.

I'm not too crazy with Windows Vista 64 bit though, I run 32 bit right now. I can say my fave operating system had to be Windows XP. I heard Windows 7 is like a mac though, and I do not like Macs.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

A fancy computer probably wont help you with netplay. If there is a lag it is probably caused by your Internet connection or distance from each other. If it won't connect it is probably caused by your router or firewall.

IMO. That computer is overkill. But I am cheap. It is a sweet PC.

My favorite OS is vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool. I don't recommend it for an Alienware PC though.

I don't think Windows 7 will be much like a Mac. Looks very much like Vista.

If your old computer is having problems that it didn't used to have then that is probably caused by something you are doing and will probably happen on the new computer. Reinstalling will fix those types of problems.

At one time it did work perfectly, then something happened to her computer and ever since then we couldn't get it to work. I read somewhere that netplay don't work well on laptop's either.

I'm on the computer most of the time too, I'm hoping to just get a really good PC so I can do anything on it without having to check how much memory or space is left.

ooh that's good then, I can say I like vista but in ways I don't like Vista.

When we did netplay though, she had to be the host for some reason never really worked on my comp.

Most common causes for this are over heating, out of space, or software problem. Software and space problems are usually caused by bad user habits. Over heating is usually caused by bad or blocked fan or dusty heat sink.

Not ture.

If you can connect and play fine but not host then the problem is your router or firewall.

If I remember right I think she got a virus and parents put a crap load of firewalls or something on there.

That's good to hear, I know sometimes when we played the second lag when pushing buttons only happened to me.

Gonna check out that site now, thanks!

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

I think you are doing waaaaaaaaaay overkill on the RAM there, my 2.5 year Vista does just fine with 4GB (and 1GB is totally ignored because of 32-bit x86 hardware limitation =P). Then again I don't know what you are going to play or do with that computer, but I can't even begin to think of why you'd need so much memory.

I'd trade off some of the RAM (maybe reduce to 8GB if you can) and notch up the CPU speed a bit. I'd also see if you can't get something better than typical integrated audio. I'd change the speakers to use the typical TRS connector rather than USB.

Everything else seems ok I think, but of course I'm not the one buying the computer. Sounds like a sweet machine =).

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

Thanks for the reply. 8 GB RAM (I believe) was the default and just want a powerhouse computer to play games, chat, and go on RU on. Right now this laptop cna't play some coin op games without going in High Performance (which will overheat it.)

Good idea on the CPU speed, basically, after I get my gaming stuff done I am going to be saving for this thing to pay it off all at once.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

You can get by with just 8GB probably, especially if you're going with Windows 7, it uses less memory for the OS than Vista does.

My computer has

2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo
Vista 32-bit
4GB RAM (limited to 3GB as stated before)
Nvidia 8600 GTS 256MB via PCI Express x16
2 320GB hard drives
Sigmatel HD Audio device integrated on the motherboard

Manufactured in 2007.

With this I can run pretty much any game on RU at 100%, while running another application that eats up 100% CPU time. The only ones that don't are some that use lots and lots of 3D, or those that aren't fully emulated in MAME yet.

Believe me your conceptual machine would eat all of RU for breakfast at current specs =).

If you want I can help you more, just give me price ranges of what you're willing to spend, what you plan to do with the computer, and the site that you built the computer on, maybe I can help find a good balance for you. If not I'll just post some general recommendations for you.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

First thing you need to do is guarantee yourself you're getting a good buy. Secondly, if you can, install programs like Norton Antivirus to keep out viruses. You'll need a few programs to run maintenance because gaming throws a lot of cookies out there and you want it clean.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

What I plan to do with it is be able to download anime, be able to be on msn, play RU games, make CT load fastest as possible, and maybe download some large computer files like SF4.

I built it on HP.com, HP Official Store — Buy an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-180t series desktop PC from HP .

Basically anything that I want to run or am going want to run in the future, I want this computer to be able to do that.

What's great though, is if my computer ever gets a virus *knocks on wood* my Mom actually can fix it. I don't trust norton and I use AVG Free atm. I'd probably look into something like Black ice down the road. I kinda had problems with it on my Mom's computer preventing me from accessing a site. x.x

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

Even if you don't, Norton is still far more effective than you take it for. Still, if that's your preference, I might suggest installing programs like Scandisk. My mom raised a bunch of computer fiends, so I know from experience.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

Ok I just built your computer on the site and.....

Wow. Memory is super cheap now. Only $160 for another 4 GB @_@. Compared with when I bought mine it's pretty much free now. I still don't think you need 12GB, but at such a low price it's a good deal I can't blame you if you take it.

I take it back on upping the CPU. $300 for an extra .33Ghz is not worth it in my opinion.

I recommend you drop an extra $40 for the X-Fi Xtreme Audio, and an extra $20 for the stereo speakers with subwoofer. I'm a little unsure with the speakers though because there are no pictures, and space considerations might be a concern. But, plugging into a USB port sounds definitely strange to me, it sounds like one of those cheapo speakers for laptops that go in the USB port. Or you could hit no speakers and buy your own. I'd always take the TRS connector for sound over USB. But, meh personal preference.

I liked how the description for your GFX card was "Performance-level graphics. Value price". I had to laugh at that. Such hyped up advertising. My 256MB 8600 has delivered perfectly for me, running all emulators (even PS2 =P) no problem. Yours again should swallow RU whole. And you can use it for MAME and other things. As long as you have DVI cables or up you should get the best picture quality out of it =).

Optionally, you could get a second hard drive, but don't get it from the site just buy your own from Best Buy or somewhere. Cap it at one TB, prices get ridiculous beyond that range. Use it to store all your uncompressed movies and uncompressed music on like I do.

As for virus protection, I've heard lots of bad things about Norton. It has been compromised in the past. I personally use McAfee SecurityCenter and I haven't been invaded yet. There are probably other options I don't know about.

Oh, and CCleaner is an awesome junk finder. It also will sweep your registry clean. Again there are other options but this is what I use.

Overall I think your system is pretty nice. Good price too, around $2000. Mine cost $2500 in 2007 XD. Still going strong. You should be able to make yours last for years =).

Still, there are better options out there. Go with what you're familiar with.

Re: Buying a new PC/MSN help

+1 again, (I decided instead of getting a few Prinny t-shirts and a Rozalin figure I'd begin to save up for this bad boy. I got $400 so far unless I have to use it for a car )

I do have a spare flash drive, I got it for like 16 bucks at Walgreens, it's a duracell 8 GB.

Memory sure is cheap, a gig for this laptop only costs 16 bucks. As said though, I want a monster for a computer~

When I saw the $300 I sorta soiled my pants, I'd like to get stuff cheap but I agree. Not worth it.

True with the speakers tidbit, should just get it somewhere else.

Sweet! At once I am penny pinching but I am also trying to get the best out of it. Since I do plan on getting stuff like PS1 games to work on my computer. This one..? LMAO No freaking WAY.

As I said earlier, I think I will use this computer and the 8GB memory for storage, I hope to wipe this clean and use it as a non competeing PC and just a chatting PC.

I actually haven't been invaded with AVG either. It's nifty. I heard of this one my friend uses, something about a Panda or something, it supposed to do really good.

Registry is the D drive right? Cuz on this I got less than a gig left. :P I couldn't understand why I used up over 10 gigs in that alone.

Awesome, thanks again for the help. Now I got a reason to go to work, cuz I am utterly tired of using my Mom's comp on games like Cyborg 009 just to submit a HS.
