Building a Custom PC

I'm moving up north to go to music school in August, and I need a new computer. My current one just isn't cutting it anymore. I've been going back and forth between thinking I should buy a MacBook (but they are sooooo expensive) or building my own PC. So I had a few questions about building PCs that I thought maybe you guys could help answer. I've never done this before:

I went to Newegg and added everything I would need to my cart just to get a ballpark of price, and it seemed like I could get a pretty decent PC (4 GB of RAM, decent GFX card, 1 TB Hard drive) for about 500 bucks. Is that a reasonable ball park, or did I miss something?

Also, what all do I need.

A case
A motherboard
A processor
A hard drive
A graphics card
A disc drive
A power supply
A sound card?
Other things?...

I've also heard about compatibility, which I know nothing about. How do I know if my parts are compatible?

Any other general advice you could give would be great. I appreciate the help.

Re: Building a Custom PC

My advice, if possible use two mid-range processors and make a dual processing unit (can't think of a better name).

Re: Building a Custom PC

There are additional risks when building it yourself. On my first one I dropped a screw behind the motherboard and when I turned it on I fried it. Ironically I bought it from Fry's and they exchanged it for free.

I have had good experience from Portatech.com. I think you can ask them to put it all together for you for free.

All the parts have to be compatible. I suggest, especially for your first time, to buy everything from the same place and ask them, "will this all be compatible? If it turns out it is not can I exchange a part for something that is compatible for free even after I have opened it?"

Buy the motherboard and processor and processor fan and processor heat sink all packaged together to make sure they are all compatible.

Decide if you want 32Bit or 64Bit processor. My info is outdated so do your own research. Main question are, is all of the software you want to use compatible with 64Bit. Are the benefits worth the extra money.

After you decide 32 or 64 then decide how much RAM you want. 32bit has a max of 4GB. If you go 64Bit you can get more RAM. I think 3-4GB should be plenty. Use DDR2. Make sure it is compatible with the mother board. Half a GB of RAM will probably be directed to your video card so that Windows registers 4GB as 3.5GB.

When buying a processor you are going to see stuff like Duel Core and Quad Core. Duel Core is similar to having two processors in one. Quad core - 4. It makes comparing by numbers difficult so look at speed ratings instead. Try to find the price break in the ratings. Sometimes upgrading to the next processor will give a big boost in speed for just a few bucks, sometimes the opposite.

You will also need to decide AMD or Intel for the processor. The companies often go back and forth on who has the best deals. So look at the speed ratings and price breaks. If you use my link above you will need to pull them up on two different pages and flip back and forth.

It is worth spending some time comparing the speed ratings and prices. There is a lot of variance and they are pretty easy numbers to understand.

Power supply. You need to make sure it will power everything. Motherboards can take different amounts of power and plugs. Powerful video card require a power cord from the main power supply and most power supplies don't have that cord. There are two main types of hard drives, IDE and SATA. Each requires different connections to the power supply. Make sure yours has enough to connect all of your drives. This info will probably not be in the description and you will have to call/email to find out.

You can get video card, notwork card, and sound card all integrated into the motherboard. This is much cheaper but it is also lower quality. For average use it is worth the money saved.

For modern 3D games, you might want to upgrade the video card. This will cost you around an extra $100. Nearly all video games have an option to turn down details and play on an integrated generic video card, so you should really think about if this is worth it or not.

For me the integrated sound card has always been good enough. Since you are getting this specifically for music school you might not agree. This is probably worth some research for you. You can always add this on at a later date.

The integrated network card will do everything you need unless you need wireless. USB wireless cards cost about the same as internal ones and are easy to let a buddy borrow if you ever need to. This can be bought separate from everything else.

Disc drive - decide if you need to play or burn DVDs. Thumb drives are nearly always more convenient than burning but you might want to do burn a couple times - especially in music school. You should be able to get a good one cheap from craigslist or a thrift store. You don't need to buy this with everything else, they are standardized. You will need one to install windows from disk.

Cases are starting to get pretty standardized but still make sure it is compatible with the motherboard and power supply and has enough room for all your drives (if you plan on having a lot). This shouldn't be a problem. Basic ones are about $30 new but you can also use a free one from criagslist, thrift store or the trash. I have made several just to make them unique. I've used picture frames to hang them on the wall and arcade cabinets.

Hard drives - splurge for SATA drives. They cost more but are much faster. You don't want the bottle neck to be the hard drive. If you want to save some money you can look at getting a 200GB SATA drive for your main install drive and a TB IDE drive for your back up drive. Prices are still dropping fast on HDs. You can get just what you need now, and when you run out of space add another drive for cheaper then.

If you want a standard big CRT monitor get it from a thrift store - 21 inches should cost $20. If you want a newer flat panel monitor check craigslist/ebay or buy new. I think in the long run the extra money you spend on a flat panel will be saved in electricity bills. CRTs use quite a bit more.

A decent keyboard and mouse can be found at thrift stores for a buck each. Laser mice cost more but are very precise and don't get dirty. After you get used to touchpad mice they are pretty good too. You can get an ergonomic mouse from ebay for $30-40. I think it is worth it.

Cooling pacakge - I've never used the Portatech Quiet Package, but I know their standard ones are loud.

You also need an OS.

Good luck.

Re: Building a Custom PC

Cool, thanks for all the help. I think I am starting to figure it out and understand what is compatible and what is the best value. I'll let you know when I'm done.

---------- Post added 07-04-2010 at 07:58 PM ---------- Previous post was 07-01-2010 at 08:30 PM ----------

Alright, I got lots of opinions and I finally made a purchase today. I am pretty happy with it and think I made the right one. I bought my parts from a website that puts it all together for me and ships me a full computer ready to go.

4GB DDR2 RAM
AMD Quad Core Processor
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB Video Card
750 GB Hard Drive
Gigabyte Motherboard
Fancy case

Plus I got a bunch of free stuff for buying certain parts, including an MP3 player that I don't really need, Modern Warfare 2, Street Fighter IV, PowerDirector 8, and a Gigabyte dual lens gaming mouse.

I'm stoked. I've never had a nice computer before. Just computers good enough to get on the internet and play music and videos and stuff, that tend to break a lot.

Thanks for the help Kong and DM.

I'll probably just go with Windows 7. It does the job for me, and I already have a disc for it.

Re: Building a Custom PC

Got my computer up and running. Confirmed that it will run any modern game I throw at it. And it's purty. Looks like this:

I also got some free game downloads with it. Modern Warfare 2 included. At 12 GB it will only take me a week to download on my garbage internet connection!

Woo.

Thanks again for the help.

Awesome.
Are you going to name it?
Also, it's cool that you can run modern games, my computer freezes when I try to run Portal, it freezes before I even get the portal gun, it makes me mad.

Haha. My old computer would crash when I tried to play the first Sims game. My new computer can play Modern Warfare 2 with everything turned all the way up.

It's quite an amazing upgrade.

Yeah, what DM said.

I had a very pleasant experience with the website I bought it from. They were very reasonably priced and I didn't have to worry about compatibility or put it together or anything like that.

If you are looking to get a gaming computer, I recommend 'em. I bought a PC on special so I got it pretty cheap and got free shipping.

Re: Building a Custom PC

They have weekly specials, so there is always something going on. Depending on what you want you can probably get something pretty cheap. I paid $730 total and my computer is a beast.

Right now they have a special for a PC with and AMD dual core processor, 4GB DDR2 RAM, an average Radeon graphics card, and a 1TB hard drive starting at $569. You can add stuff to make it better for more money, and even take stuff away, like if you don't need that big of a hard drive or something, which makes it drop in price.

I would definitely suggest checking it out.
