Fixing cars

So I'm gonna try to replace the starter on my 98 nissan maxima to try and save about $300. I found a (what seems to be) pretty decent tutorial online, and although I dont know all the fandangled terms for the various parts, it seems pretty straight forward.

Does anyone know anything about this process that might seem obvious to them but, someone with pretty much zero experience might not know?

Here is the tutorial I found: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2076435

Re: Fixing cars

yeah make sure you disconnect the battery before you get to work on replacing the starter. also you might want to check if the original starter is in fact not working. Why replace something that's working just fine? to do that all you have to do is connect the positive and negative cords from the removed starter to the battery. If the gear inside the starter pops up and down then it should still be good and your problem may be something else.

Re: Fixing cars

Well the starter does still work, but it grinds like crazy and sometimes takes a few tries to start up, my wife needs the car for work (drives around town walking dogs) so we really cant have it suddenly break down, so this is somewhat precautionary. Thanks for teh reply jozzy.

Re: Fixing cars

well then yeah you are going to want to swap it out. I don't know how much space you have for your starter, but when I changed mine for my truck, it was a pain. I just couldn't seem to pull out the starter. The space was soo tight. It's a good thing car parts are pretty sturdy so don't be afraid to use some force. Good luck bro.

Set aside a 3-day weekend for it.
