That sounds like an Amazon Trail game.
Basically you travelled down a river. You had to keep yourself alive by catching fish, collecting fruit. Some food was poisonous. You kept a log of things you saw. Sometimes you would find villages, including a camp where the occupiers made you their slave if you talked to them.
A feature was a talking lion/tiger/jaguar head that kept track of some kind of progress for you. I can't remember much more than that because it was one of those 'free' games from some purchase or something and it sucked so I never finished it.
