Sure you get an achievement for the romance subplots but it's not like you just walk up to an npc and have your way with them. ME is very character driven and what you do changes how people feel about you. You have to build a relationship over time and eventually it happens. Also worth noting is how DA allows gay sex but ME doesn't. Both games only allow you to have single partner relations ships as well, as far as I know. So it's not like GTA where it's just some thing to be edgy. It's a mature rated game and it has a mature storyline. I think it's completely appropriate and normal.

@Kong- I hate that too. A lot of times the love story feels tacked on because they think it has to be in the movie/game. In ME and DA you can skip relationships if you want.
