Aero the Acro-Bat » Sega-Genesis » Discuss » Plays: 195  4****

Introducing our three chief protagonists: Aero the Acrobat, a daredevil bat who is the star of the circus; Edgar Ektor, clown prince and mean guy extraordinaire; and Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Ektor's chief henchman whose sense of duty and loyalty seem strangely misplaced.

Probably the most concerted effort by a software house in cloning the success of the Sonic series. Gets old fast, ridiculous in places, but you never lack for action. It sold by the bucketful when it was first released.

Aero the Acrobat has a really annoying circus music soundtrack & never quite lives up to it's promise as a Sonic beater.

The idea behind this game is just to solve puzzle kind of levels with some... space man. With this astronaut (if you can call it that way) you have to shoot other astronauts, space ships and avoid mines bombs and aliens (if it are aliens, I'm not sure :). At the end of a level (which is just one screen). You have to shoot some kind of ball, seems like the thing you have to hit and then there come out squirts and other animals in the Sonic series on the Sega. Then the level is finished. You get an amount of time at the start of the level (1 min, 2 min and so on) within you have to reach the ball thing.

Bubsy is a smart alec bobcat who seems to spend most of his time running around and dealing with the various platform pratfalls and arcade antics that compose his strange little life. Apparently Accolade spent a lot of time and effort developing and promoting what was to be the ultimate Sonic clone. In short, it was overly long in development and overly short in gameplay.

This first game has loads of cheap shots, and the whole point seems to be to see the ultracool death sequences. A sad footnote in the history of Sonic clones.

This second game is more balanced than the first and even takes a stab at a pseudo-3D element, but why couldn't Accolade get it right the first time? Oh, yea - gotta make money. A sad footnote in the history of Sonic clones.

Unga-bunga!  It's a jungle out there, and our good friend Chuck Rock has more than his share of daily troubles.  A prehistoric platformer from the vaults of the people who went on to create Tomb Raider, and yet another title ported from the software library of the almighty Amiga computer.

An excellent game already, this is as good as any port I've seen for any other platform.  Graphics, sound, and gameplay are all great (whoever heard of using your gut as a weapon?!) and an enjoyable experience overall.  A welcome change of pace for bleary-eyed Sonic fanatics.

You play as Spot, the popular 1980s mascot for the 7UP soft drink company, as he wanders about in various places collecting enough stuff to free his buddies.

Superior in most ways to its predecessor and possibly worthy of comparison to Sonic 3, although gameplay is nowhere near as fast.

The creators of Aero the Acrobat bring you this happy holiday platformer, in which Santa must recover all of his stolen toys from the Evil Louse and his henchmen. No, I'm not making this up - that's the plot!

A typical Sunsoft platformer - they could have substituted Aero the Acrobat and all his buddies and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference from an Aero game.  Oh, yeah, it has that inevitable Sunsoft touch of irritatingly rendered digital music.  Go play Sonic!

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine » Sega-Master-System » Discuss » Plays: 298

Dr. Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog's archenemy, is the malicious mastermind of planet Mobius. His favorite hobby is teasing, taunting and tormenting the world and its people. His latest criminal creation is the Mean Bean-Steaming Machine, an infernal contraption that changes the jolly folk of Beanville into devious little robots bent on ridding Mobious of music and fun forever.

To carry out his plan, Robotnik has sent his henchbots to round up the beans and group them together in dungeons. This is where you come in: as each pair of beans comes into the dungeon, you must maneuver and rotate them into place, similar to how you would maneuver and rotate the blocks in Tetris or the gems in Columns. When two beans of the same color touch, they link. To make beans disappear from the dungeon, you must link together four or more of the same color.

When you drop a pair of beans horizontally on an uneven surface, the bean left suspended will separate from the pair and drop to the lowest point in the column. When you cause a grouping of beans to disappear, any beans remaining above the action will drop into place. This can be used to create chain reactions, which give you bonus points. In two-player games, chain reactions help you dump refugee beans into your opponent's dungeon. Refugee beans don't belong to any specific clan and can only be removed by a neighboring group of four or more beans.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine includes three modes of play: Scenario Mode, 1P vs. 2P Mode, and Exercise Mode. The game ends when your dungeon fills to the top with beans. Occasionally, when all seems lost, a couple of friends will drop in to lend a hand: Has Bean changes beans he walks over to the same color, and Big Bean clears the screen of beans just by dropping on them.

The best of the Tetris knock-offs, this Japanese product adds some new moves, a plot of sorts, and great artwork. An excellent port of the arcade original. The built-in tutorial mode is also a nice touch.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a custom English language version of Puyo Puyo made by Compile for Sega of America - the biggest difference is that the chan-style graphics and plot were ripped out and replaced with a Sonic-derived setup.

You play Flicky, a cute blue bird who has to save its chicks from some rather frisky kitties. The game that seems to have inspired Sonic 3D Blast, according to Steve Sharp. Ported from the 1984 arcade game.

Cutesy platformer in the same vein as Bubble Bobble, right down to the nauseatingly saccharine techno tunes. Do yourself a favor and save it for the kids.

Gadget Land is a world of intelligent airplanes. The King's Magic Jewel has been stolen, and it's up to the Gadget Twins to find it.

Bright and colorful cartoon graphics are the highlight of this juvenile Sonic clone. Level design is not the greatest, though, and the gameplay is just plain awful - not to mention the nauseatingly peppy BGM tracks. It paints a pretty picture, but that's all.

O brave knight, save us from the Demon Lord and his minions! He has seized your love, the Princess, and carried her away to his dark delvings. Can you fight your way through the many enemies and obstacles in you path to save her - and her kingdom? Ported from the megahit arcade original.

Colorful graphics and awesome gameplay. Two gripes, though. First, once you jump, you're committed to a landing spot even if an enemy pops up there. Second, after clearing the first six stages, you have to go back and play through them a second time. Still, it's worthy of mention in the same breath as Sonic.

A scientist and his two female assistants work on ESP research in a remote science laboratory. One day, a section of the lab blows up.  It turned out that the monsters kept for experiments escaped and took one of the assistants with them.  The scientist gives an "ESP booster" to the remaining assistant so she can go rescue her.

Your character possesses psychic power which she uses to blast away her enemies.  You start the game with few powers and eventually gain more as items dropped by monsters are picked up.  You control powers such as fire, ice, sonic waves, temporary invincibility, levitation, and more.  Press Down + Button 2 to access your arsenal of powers.

Boring mix of arcade and strategy bombs.

Are you bored of being a valiant prince who saves a lovely princess? Are you sick and tired of dungeons and "mother brain"? do you deliberately stay away from games in which you have to fight as a knight in shining armor? If you've answered "yes" to any of the questions above, Psycho Fox is the game for you!

You're Psycho Fox, an extraordinary fox that goes out to save the world from the wicked Madfox Daimyojin. He's the powerful, evil fox that sends out all sorts of bizarre creatures to conquer the world. Ever heard of Zizo Zizo or Poota? They're just a few of the numerous unheard-of enemies you'll encounter.

Watch out for those trick stairways and disappearing bridges! The Madfox has completely changed the landscape - just to give you a hard time! Sounds like a tough trek? Don't give up yet! You have the power to transform into other animals to help you get through certain obstacles. Remember you're not an average fox, you're Psycho Fox!

This has taken the best attributes from other arcade adventures. The main character, Mr Fox, is almost as cheeky as Sonic himself. There is a funny ending when you complete Psycho Fox.

Pulseman » Sega-Genesis » Discuss » Plays: 0

In a plot that echoes of both Tron and Megaman, this is a story about a Japanese scientist who creates a digital superhero and a rival who would like to take control of that creation for his own ends.

Like Ristar before him, Pulseman strives for Sonic's level of perfection but falls just short. It's just a little too easy to get hit when you're going at full speed, and you're required to use his special move (with which you bounce off walls like a billiard ball) way too often. But hey - anything remotely close to Sonic is better than almost anything else out there.

You take on the role of a brown skateboard-riding dinosaur out doing his thing in the jungle, Sonic-style. Based on the syndicated animated TV series.

Cute platformer bearing a somewhat passing resemblance to its Japanese cousins. The tongue-in-cheek humor gets a little silly at times, but it doesn't detract from a quite entertaining game.

In a distant galaxy not too long ago, the forces of evil were hard at work. The evil tyrant Greedy had taken over and enslaved the people, even going so far as to capture and imprison their legendary hero. A desperate plea for help was sent out, and answered by the hero's own son Ristar.

Bionic Commando meets Sonic the Hedgehog. Character design and control are fantastic, but gameplay is slightly hampered by poor enemy and level design. The puzzles are intriguing and simple enough to solve, but this game could do as well without them. Graphics and music are great, though. So close to being a great game, and yet not.
