Square-Enix is looking toward a new monetization model for its games released in the West. They're aiming for a longer period of revenue by continually adding updates and paid features. It doesn't seem too bad on the surface, but it sounds like upcoming titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts are going to be filled to the brim with microtransaction bullshit.

Depends on how it's handled. If its like buying a la carte it might be beneficial to consumers.

Sounds to me like the mobile model. I'm not going to be purchasing any games that require periodic payments to be enjoyable.

After reading the article it sounds like its more aimed at expanding their western catalog and increasing the frequency in which titles are released with a general goal of targeting as many platforms as possible.

From what I gather, they might end up using a pay-to-play format (instead of $60 up front it's $10 a month) or something like U-Play.
