After a sluggish financial performance due to business changes, Rune Factory developer Neverland has announced it will be closing its doors.
The Japanese company made the announcement via its official website, explaining that its financial status had deteriorated considerably in recent times. After failing to raise the necessary amount of funds needed to continue operations, the only remaining option was to shut down immediately and begin proceedings for bankruptcy.
Neverland was founded in 1993 and is best known for the long-running Lufia series, and developing Marvelous ALQ’s Rune Factory series (a spin-off of Harvest Moon). Whilst Rune Factory 4 for the 3DS was the fastest-selling title in the Rune Factory franchise, it appears to have been unsuccessful in saving Neverland from its financial troubles.
The only question left is what will come of Rune Factory 5? According to Rune Factory producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto, the fourth game’s reception was good enough to green light a sequel. Will it still happen? Naturally our thoughts are also with those affected by Neverland's closure.

Re: Rune Factory developer Neverland closes its doors
Thankfully Neverland doesn't own the rights to Rune Factory. Natsume owns the Japanese rights, think of it like Nintendo and Monolith Soft.
I expect some of the Neverland team will just be absorbed by Natsume and the next installment will be either developed in house or moved out to another 2nd party developer. This also shouldn't affect future localizations as Marvelous owns the North American publishing rights to Rune Factory.
I don't see the series itself going anywhere as the latest installment sold better than any of its predecessors and Natsume will want to maintain its forward momentum.
Re: Rune Factory developer Neverland closes its doors
I(being older) don't like the handheld systems..I'd buy "a next gen system" when i find out which one will have great survival horror or jrpg support..PSO2 anyone..
Re: Rune Factory developer Neverland closes its doors
I don't think age has anything to do with it. I'm 36 and cut my teeth on the Coleco.
I'd much, much rather have a handheld console than a home console. I like the mobility of having my gaming when I want, where I want. Even though most of my handheld gaming is done on the living room couch anyways.
Besides, if you're looking for JRPG support outside of handhelds you're looking at thin pickings.

Well "good" is subjective.
It looks like something I would really, really, enjoy. It's also made by a dev team I have a lot of trust in and that developed my personal 2013 GotY. It's also a simulation RPG which is something this dev team excels at more than any other genre. Also, the art style seems bright, colorful, and pleasing to the eye.
It does not look like something you would enjoy.
I've also preordered this. Can't wait for April 15th!

Re: Rune Factory developer Neverland closes its doors
I asked because you guys reacted so strongly about a few screenshots. When I looked all I saw was some typical looking anime shots. I didn't understand what looked so special about it. Obviously I don't like the art style but I can usually get past that if the gameplay looks good enough. From what little I saw it seemed impossible to tell.
You're wrong I probably would like that game, for the gameplay at least. That being said it is a bit far on the "meanwhile in Japan" side for my tastes.
