NESBot TASes Super Mario Bros.
The idea behind a Tool Assisted Speedrun is to use save states, rerecords, and frame-by-frame advance to create a file that contains a series of recorded button presses that in theory can be played back on the actual console for which they are intended.

Well, TASing just became less theoretical, with the first ever "machine verified" TAS.
Using an Arduino prototype board, a robot was built that plays back an input file on a real NES. The result?

That was something else. I wonder what kind of input files it takes.

I had never seen a speed run of that game before. Didn't know you could wall jump in that game.

The upside is when you finish it, it's pretty awesome to watch. For me at least. I know some people call out TASes for being fake, claiming they can't be done on a real console. Or that they can't be compared to a real time run, which is silly because they're not, they are created for entertainment purposes only.
