Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
I didn't bother reading the link, but I'm interested if there is going to be a live feed of this. Does anyone know if this will be available?

Is this really news anymore? Good for Wiebe, but I think his 15 minutes are done.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
I'd be more interested if they did a more interesting game. This seems like a competition of patience instead of actual skill.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
DudeBro I completely disagree. Donkey Kong is all about skill. (And a little luck too.) There are tricks you can do to help you along the way. (Controlling barrels, controlling what side a fireball appears.)
The rest is all skill, and there are many risks along the way the top Donkey Kong players take that allow them to get million plus scores before the kill screen. When you take those risks it is your skills that will allow you to survive.
That being said, I am afraid this has been played out. People like me who respect the skill required to play this game are interested, but the general gaming population has moved on.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
I'm not denying the skill involved I'm just saying at a certain point skill hits a wall and it comes down to whoever can stand playing that boring game for hours. I know that's probably sacrilege to take a shot at DK but it is boring and repetitive.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
Well I don't find it boring. It is tough from the start, and never lets up the challenge. You have to be on your toes at all times. There is no such thing as a marathon game in arcade Donkey Kong. Once you hit the kill screen it is Game Over no matter how good you are.
The trick is scoring enough points before reaching it to be number one. A kill screen game usually lasts anywhere from just over 2 hours to 2 and 1/2 hours in my experience.

Obviously not everyone is gonna agree but I just think the repetition is mind numbingly boring. Like I said before, they should do this with a more interesting game.

Most of the arcade games had very few screens {total} back in the early days, and I think people were happy with what they had.
Yes, by today's standards {the level to which the bar has been raised} the early games seem simple, some may even say '2 dimensional'.
But this is like if I said:
'Hey, DB! Check out my slick new ride - it's a Model 'T' Ford, and can go over 40 mph if you really put your foot down~'
By today's standards this is a joke, taken in the context that even an inexpensive compact car could outperform its ancestor, but I imagine to people seeing cars for the first time back then it was amazing to travel at that speed.
{although, horses can run faster than that for a short while, can't they?}
Actually I have to tell you that the first time I saw Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong » Coin Op
I was transported to another World , in comparison to the games I had seen up to that point {early 80's} and so to me it was GREAT.
I was in awe of its Model T Ford fresh awesomeness.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
Nintendo should released a fixed version of the game just so that people can compete on it. The could call it
DONKEY KONG HYPER CHAMPION TURBO II EDITION
.

Re: Steve Wiebe to attempt new world record of classic arcade game Donkey Kong
They could do that Seahawk, but of course the purists would come out and start campaigns on how Nintendo ruined Donkey Kong and how they should be boycotted because of it.

The problem is their stubborn insistance on playing a game they find interesting instead of one you find interesting.

Do they really find it interesting or do they play it because they're good at it?

I'm assuming they both like the game and the competition.

Very interesting. I don't know how one person could play so much Donkey Kong, but hey if he loves it, go for it
