Twingalaxies down

Looks like the site may have been purchased by the-1up (note the redirect). If this is true this is GREAT news.

Twin Galaxies will be back

Re: Twingalaxies down

I hate those turds at 1up though... I listen to all their podcasts, and enjoy hearing their opinions. They seem like nice people... maybe I'm just jealous.

Why do you think this is good news? Just because TG wasn't all that healthy as of late?

I have heard this as well many times. In fact if you do just a bit of searching there are alot of accusations of this. People would beat a world record, but allegedly TG would not allow the game to be challenged because the score was held by one of their buddies, or they put a moratium on certain games ever being challenged at all. This is what I have heard, but I haven't experienced this myself.

I just want to say, one thing I love about RU is the integrity the Kongger has tried to inject into the site. In all my years here, I have never seen any case of favoritism towards someone regarding someone challenging a score. Everything is fair game, and I believe that is one of the things that makes RU such a nice and competitive place.

I respect the place that TG had in gaming history, but I believe RU offers far more for the future of retro gaming.

Thank you for your time. God bless you and God bless America!!!

Re: Twingalaxies down

I echo WB's statement about the integrity here.

I think it is sad when someone let's pride get in the way of the greater good and it seems that it what is being alleged about Twin Galaxies.

If a score of yours get's beaten try and improve. If you can't beat it back it's not the end of the world.

For me at the end of the day what I love about this site is no matter how many scores I eventually lose, (It's inevitable) It is very easy and accessible for me to try and get them back and if I don't, that's OK. I get the opportunity to compete against some awesome players, and there is no shame in losing to a better player.

Long Live RU!

Re: Twingalaxies down

My fear is that the new ownership will put making money as their #1 priority. A change was certainly needed so I'll hope that things get better but it seems that the people buying are also the same people who like to hold these "world records" and that could become a conflict of interest real quick.

I can't speak for everyone here, but it seems that, at least the vast majority, of the community actually enjoy loosing scores as much as they enjoy setting them. It's astounding how great a group we are.

Hopefully, that won't happen. I don't think trying for world records is a bad thing in itself, but if a site, refs, or whatever become a secretive cadre of ruffians it can make things fall apart. It should be the same rules for all people across the board. I have always believed that.

TG, sadly has acquired an reputation in recent years for not recognizing scores in certain games if the record was one they didn't wish to be challenged. Discounting the events seen in King of Kong where score acceptance was not only random (i.e. Some people could send in tapes. Others could not.), but I have heard that people were discouraged or outright ignored when trying to set new highs in games like Missile Command among others. Another great thing about RU is it's all out in the open. There is no secret electronic trash bin where unwanted scores go. If a score is legitimately set, it is straight up recognized. I love RU!

Essie, I think for me anyway, RU is also greatly about the camaraderie between members and players. That speaks strongly of the guys like Kongger, Tenser, Dudebro, and Sabby who for years (way before Jozzer and I were SM's) diligently worked to make sure the forums were an orderly, but fun place to thrive with your RU friends. Compare RU to somewhere like 4-chan and the difference is immediately apparent. RU feels like a safe place, and I think that spirit carries over to the gaming for the most part as well.

I can't think of another site I have ever been apart of where the fellow members not only cheer one another on to be the best they can be in gaming, but also just hang out with one another. It's pretty cool. This is the only site I can think of where there are people on here I would one day actually want to meet in real life.

Anyway, I hope the new owners will help make TG a better place so the site can get back on its feet. No hard feelings there, but maybe it will be a lesson in what can happen when people in charge become corrupt. Hopefully, they can get better in the future.

I think you nailed it on the spot WB, RU really is a unique spot.
As someone that doesn't play games anymore here, I keep coming
back because of the awesome community here and talk about
basically anything because of this close group we have.

I'm glad I found RU, you guys here are some of the most awesome
people I've met, and that's what this site is really about, being
a gaming community.

@About TG- I wonder if they'll suffer fools as much as before? I was so turned off by how they just had no spine about problem users. You can only warn people so many times and have them ignore you before you have to do something about it.

They like me! They really like me! Nah. I think my recent long absence from RU really reminded me what a great and unique place RU is.

It's about the people from the users, to the GMs (that constantly work to keep the gaming show running behind the scenes), to every body that makes RU such a party every day!

I should probably reiterate too that I'm not anti-TG. I have an account over there that I have done some with, but there's no place like RU. RU has the gaming, the integreity, the people, and the good times. Long may it live!

Re: Twingalaxies down

This is my guess as to what might be in store. I may be putting too much importance on the words "Arcade Culture" but TG was started for the purpose of keeping track of Arcade game scores and I think they are going to focus on that. Wether they totally get out of console game tracking is a good question but I really think the new management is going to encourage people to get back out to the arcades to set World Records on actual arcade games played in public.

I also don't think that RU and TG really are in the same market. Sure both keep track of video game scores but that's where the comparison ends. Just recently, TG decided that MAME would be the only emulation they would accept. And from what I know of the new TG ownership, they aren't even fans of MAME and think all gaming should be done on original hardware. RU is all emulation all the time. There are a number of people that for one reason or another will never accept competitive gaming using emulation.

For myself, I love emulation and I love how easy it is to play games and submit scores here. I can't see myself ever recording my gampley on a VHS tape and spending time and money to send it in the mail again. I may however visit one of my local arcades someday to attempt a WR on an arcade game depending on how the new TG works out.

Those are all good points DBC. My point would be, if TG does get back to just accepting scores played live in Arcades, then they are going to quickly become more irrelevant than they already are becoming.

I agree with you that emulation is the way to go. We don't live in a world anymore where people can easily access arcades, and with technology being what it is, most people probably don't see the need. For example, where I live in FL, I would literally have to drive 100 miles to get to an arcade. Even if I did that, there is no way I will be able to challenge for the World Record in Boxy Boy or something similarily obscure. I would probably have to fly to some dude's house in Japan to have a shot at it. This seems beyond crazy to me, and would eliminate thousands of games from competition.

Also, in the era we live in when console Retro Gaming has come back in such a big way (just take a look at all the preloaded emulator consoles people can get now), I think it would be a misstep to ignore WR's for console games as they are so popular.

I guess time will tell what TG does, but it will be interesting to see.

Indeed WB, but what i think TG needs to realize is that not many people still have the original consoles (IE Atari, Sega Genesis, etc) so itd be hard trying to send in scores for them knowing that they are rare to find, which is why i believe emulation is the future for retro gaming to date

Re: Twingalaxies down

WB-I didn't mean to suggest that they would stop allowing people to do scores at home and send in video for WR's. What I predict is that they will open at least one (probably the 1 up in Denver) and maybe many more arcades under the name of Twin Galaxies where they will have electronic scoreboards that are linked (similar to what Aurcade is doing). They will have official refs at all of these locations and they will allow a person to set a score on location under view of the ref and no video will be required. I also think they will hold tournaments that will encourage people to travel to their Arcades.

Only time will tell. I think there are a ton of alternatives for people who want to compete on console games but there is only one place that tracks Arcade records. I really think if TG wants to survive, they need to stick with what they started and concentrate on Arcade records because most of todays gamers have no interest in going through all the hassle that TG requires to get a score posted on a console game.

Bummer to hear about the lack of arcades in your area. I thought Florida had a ton. I'm lucky. I live in Salem Oregon and there are two arcades in Portland that are less than an hour's drive, Ground Kontrol and Strykers Arcade, and one that just shut down but still opens on occasion, Envisions Arcade. Then there is Level Up Arcade south of me in Eugene about an hour away and the icing on the cake. The guy I purchased my Asteroids and Omega Race from is opening an Arcade right here in Salem that will be within walking distance of my work, The Coin Jam.

Re: Twingalaxies down

I wonder what they mean with the term "arcade culture" anyways. Do they mean the atmosphere around 80s arcades or the 90s fighter scene? Do they mean the rather detrimental arcade PCB collector/hoarder scene?

A big problem for this is verification. If you get a replay file from someone on the internet, it's impossible to tell whether it is a genuine run or tool assisted.

Another problem is just the nature of hardware vs. emulators. With hardware you can be sure that everyone playing the game is getting the same game experience, the same game input timings. With the number of emulators that exists (and none of them 100% accurate, many are pretty bad) it is difficult to judge them all equally.

Good point SFF. That's another reason why a place like RU is where the action is at. It's all right here.

I think that is what some of TG's past contoversy was over. They would only allow certain people to submit via tape (and others were not recognized). This opened the door to alot of problems over fairness.

That could be, but I don't see too many people who will travel just to do this. I'm sure some will, but it could hurt their overall popularity if this were to happen.

What do you mean, only one place that tracks arcade records? I can think of at least one other site besides TG that tracks this type of thing. Do you mean records submitted in person?

Yeah. It's a bummer. There are some in big cities like Orlando and probably Miami, but they are few and far between everywhere else. Even Orlando doesn't have what they used to.

That's cool that you have a bunch. My city used to have 3, but most of those closed in the late 90's. You would think it would be popular since there are many students here, but sadly no.

Time will tell indeed, but I think the format of TG is very outdated. I can understand how in person verification was possible in the 80's (when arcades were everywhere), but I just don't see that again becoming a reality when this isn't the case anymore.

I really hope they keep it going. A lot of people put a lot of time in that organization for it to just get erased.

Re: Twingalaxies down

I was away from RU for most of the last year or so. During that time I visited places like TG and a few others. But I missed hanging out here so much that I had to try and re-prioritize some things to make more time in my schedule for it.

What WB said about the camaraderie here on RU is absolutely true. I've personally never been apart of an online community where I could say that there are people I genuinely like to call friends... that is until I joined RU about 3 1/2 years ago. The admins of this site have created an atmosphere where there is mutual respect, a lack of trash-talking and harassment as well as deep, intelligent discussion. Mix that with the level of gaming skills commonly displayed by the world-class (and in most cases, humble) players that frequent this site and you have a combination that is very rare indeed.

Long Live RU!

Re: Twingalaxies down

Thanks for all of the compliments!

I have a copy of all Twin Galaxy scores before they went down and I had already started working on a new site that will list all TG, MARP, RU etc scores in one list.

It will have an emulator score board, a hardware score board and a combined board.

I started it because I thought there was a gap to fill because TG was sucking. Now that it has new owners I will wait a while to see what they will do.

I doubt this will happen, but in the worst case scenario, if the new owners reset all the scores or delete emulator scores or do anything that continues to degrade TG, there is a back up.

Re: Twingalaxies down

TG was dying a slow death with ownership that didn't really care about gaming. At least this gets things back in the hands of people who actually care a lot about arcade gaming. I suspect there will be a return to a strong emphasis on gaming on actual arcade hardware and a de-emphasis on consoles and MAME. Personally I don't really care about the consoles, and I think other sites do MAME better anyway.

Note that "Arcade Culture" is also the name of the podcast/web broadcast of Richie Knucklez, and Richie is clearly involved with the acquisition. Richie was the organizer of the Kong Off and is working with 1UP arcade on the Kong Off 2. Richie has also shown pretty much open derision and hostility to MAME in the past, so I suspect MAME will not be a major focus going forward.

Regardless, I'm cautiously optimistic this will be good for the arcade scene. I only hope it doesn't result in favoritism for particular arcades or get used primarily to market just certain personalities and games.

Well put George.
I hope they dont rid of MAME altogether, it would remove my interest in the organisation completely (I cant remember the last time I saw an original cab). Having said that, I can understand why if that were to happen. Its pleasing to know that TG is now in good and capable hands, whatever path they happen to take.
