Today in Retronauts: The Return of Samus

The second segment of this week's prototype Retronauts video project looks, sensibly enough, at the second chapter of the Metroid series. (Yesterday's piece touched on the first Metroid, in case you missed it.) I think we've tidily touched on both the strengths and weaknesses of the game. It's easily the most controversial of the core Metroid games -- or was until Other M, anyway -- and our own opinions reflect that.

Metroid II is an oddity. It wasn't the only Game Boy-based sequel to an NES game by any means, but unlike, say, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, you get the impression that the developers were genuinely trying something new with this one. Gone is the totally open world and the sense of exploration, replaced by a more linear sense of progression and a heavy emphasis on "bosses," of sorts. At the same time, Samus is much more clearly defined on-screen and her skill set is far more sophisticated, working in better harmony with the game world to unlock new pathways. It's really easy to draw a line of evolution from Metroid to Metroid II to Super Metroid.

Most of Metroid II's problems stem from the technology involved, I think. The action feels more sluggish, the world feels more cramped, and the scenery is more repetitive. That's because the Game Boy wasn't as beefy as the NES, it had lower resolution, and there was no color to speak of. I've had a hard time pinning down my own exact feelings on the game over the years, to be honest; I thought it was decent when I played it back in the '90s, but when I revisited it early in my 1UP tenure (a rather sobering seven years ago, though its vintage doesn't keep people from sending me angry screeds about it every few months), I found it painfully lacking. These days, though, I'm willing to take a more nuanced stance. It doesn't quite fit in with the other Metroid games, yet it still has a place in the series. If that makes any sense.

------------

And now, it's feedback time. This week's videos are a sort of dry run for the real thing, and I'd like to hear your thoughts one how we can make them better. Specifically, I'm interested in constructive criticism -- ways to fine-tune our efforts.

Examples of things that are not constructive:

  • I hate this
  • I hate video
  • I hate you for killing the podcast
  • I demand you not kill the podcast
  • I will kill you all
Thanks!

Re: Today in Retronauts: The Return of Samus

I personally liked Metriod II much more than the original. The map layout feels much more deliberately designed to work with your powerup progression than the first game. The music also sets a much better atmosphere.

Also, figuring out how to kill the Queen Metroid at the end was an awesome moment for me.

In short, Metroid II > Metroid.

Re: Today in Retronauts: The Return of Samus

I agree, I definitely enjoyed Metroid II better than the first one. Of course many can agree that Super Metroid was the best of the 2D Metroids.
