Today in Retronauts: A Metroid Debut

As you may have heard -- and if not, it doesn't matter to you -- the Retronauts podcast will soon be coming to an end. There are a number of reasons behind this decision, but one of the most important is that I've always felt the show would work better in video form. It's one thing to talk about old games, but something else entirely to show them. We did make a furtive attempt at taking Retronauts into video form a few years ago with Bonus Stage, but that had issues. Namely, the whole thing was assembled amateurishly by me with equipment and software ill-suited for the purpose, and each episode literally ate every waking moment of my weekends from the time I got home Friday night until I fell asleep Sunday night. Not the ideal crucible for greatness, I'm afraid.

This time, though, we're serious about making Retronauts work as a video program. A daily video program, in fact. And to prove it, here's the first episode.

Kindly disregard the part about how Other M is coming soon; this video was recorded with the intent that we'd have launched it a few weeks ago, but we held back the debut to add extra polish and make this little nugget of videogame history perfect. The results were worth the wait, I think. Granted, it's a weird bit of timing that our Metroid retrospective ended up launching on the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., but life is ridiculous like that sometimes.

Of course, it quickly becomes obvious that the video is about 90 seconds long, which is pretty short. That's the point, actually, and it's where the daily element comes into play: Every day, we'll be posting a brief mini-episode on a weekly topic, a bite-sized clip that will let you start your day with a little gaming history. At the end of the week, all five pieces will be compiled into one five-to-seven-minute video, so if you'd rather wait and see the week's content in a single go, you can do that as well. In other words, this program is the same amount of weekly content as a Bonus Stage, but it's broken into smaller pieces to entertain you daily with more tightly-edited and masterfully produced content. It's different than anything we've ever done before, but I love the results.

Huge thanks to Richard Li and Scott Weber, who did the lion's share of the work here. I just sat in front of the camera with a bunch of other people and gave them some general ideas of what I wanted the show to be; they made it happen.

This week's episodes are a sort of dry run for the show; it won't begin in earnest until next month. Consider this a teaser of things to come. And keep checking back throughout the week for more Metroid retrospectives, of course.
