Second annual Battle of the Arcades

Want to watch some of the best classic arcade players in the US? This weekend the second annual Battle of the Arcades is happening. I've not been able to practice and I won't be able to be there the entire time but I will but up at the Kencade this weekend cheering on the team from the Pacific Northwest. Great bunch of guys and some amazing gameplay.

Here's a link to Aurcade where you can get links to see streaming play of the three teams involved. West Coast Team, Richie Knucklez Team and a New England team. AURCADE: Arcade Locations, Collection Tracking, News and more!

This year, the Battle of the Arcades tournament returns on March 9th (12pm-11pm est) and 10th (12pm-5pm est) pitting a trifecta of arcade giants against each other in an epic classic gaming showdown. The Kencade in Oregon, the Pinball Wizard arcade in New Hampshire and the Richie Knucklez arcade in New Jersey will feature a who’s who of competitive arcade gamers in a revolutionary team format where players are encouraged to coach each other to help propel their arcade to the top of the gaming landscape.

Last year, the Kencade topped the field led by scoreboard luminaries such as John McAllister and Matt Hall, however last year’s runner up, the Richie Knucklez arcade with a roster chock full of big names such as Hank Chien, Steve Wagner, George Leutz and Bryan Wagner are ready to take the next step. The Pinball Wizard adds arguably the greatest classic gamer in the world, Donald Hayes to their roster this year, in addition to tournament forces such as Jason Cram and David Nelson so this year’s title is certainly up for grabs.

West Coast Team (KenCade) Roster
Ken House
John McAllister
Bill Carlton
Matt Hall
Sam McNear

Richie Knucklez Team Roster

Pinball Wizards (New England) Team Roster
Chris Donahue
Donald Hayes
Dave Nelson
Jason Cram
Jen Moore
Ethan Kling
Brandon Zyxnfryx (pronounced zis en fricks)
John Pearsall

(All rosters subject to change)

As it was last year, the games list is comprised of some of the most popular classic titles of all-time to determine the victor. Competitors will battle it out on

Donkey Kong Jr (1 Hour Limit)
Millipede 5 man
Missile Command Six Cities
Mappy
Turbo Junior Pac-Man (1 Hour limit)
Phoenix (No Tricks allowed)
Elevator Action
Alpine Ski (Tournament settings)
Galaxian
Hyper Sports (1 round)
Dig Dug (1 Hour limit)
Pole Position 2

over the 2 day stretch. This is a format unlike any other you’ll find where each individual point gained can be the difference between a team victory or defeat. The entire match will be broadcast live via each arcade so you can watch all 3 squads battle it out real time on a dozen classic titles. Check out last year’s results below, if you are proximate to one of these locations and feel you have what it takes to be the ultimate team player, don’t hesitate, contact Richie Knucklez today! We also encourage other arcades, home arcades, gaming friends from all parts of the world to form a team and enter the BOTA 3 . Please email me at richie@twingalaxies.com to find out more. We would love to see this fun competition grow!

Battle of the Arcades Rules

You must have at least 8 players on your team. If you do not have the minimum number of players your team will be assigned the 9th//10th etc...player from one of the other teams until you reach 8 players total.

ALL players MUST play EVERY game title and submit a score

Your location must possess at least 8 of the tournament games in dedicated form, no more than 4 titles can be emulated either via “xx in 1” or MAME cabinets. Popular titles were chosen to aid in accommodating arcades meet this criteria.

You are NOT ALLOWED to play one game for more than 1 HOUR. If you can play a title on the settings listed, for at least 45 minutes, your game should be timed. You should alert your team captain to accommodate this 1 hour timed game. Re: Second annual Battle of the Arcades

Well, the first BOTA had more of the "most" popular games and they were trying to avoid using any of the same games again. Even on this list Dig Dug, Galaxian and Missle Command were certainly some of the most popular games of all time. Almost all of these games were very popular, with the possible exceptions of Alpine Ski and Jr Pac-Man.

Re: Second annual Battle of the Arcades

Well, while personally Phoenix holds zero appeal to me, it was actually a very common and popular game back in the day as attested to by the number of collectors of the game on KLOV (Killer List of Video Games).

Well maybe it's just me, but it's the only game one the list that I'm not familiar with.

Re: Second annual Battle of the Arcades

Spent most of the day Sunday up there. Was a good time. Got to play a ton of Alpine Ski which is a game I've never played on a dedicated cabinet before and got to watch a master at the game play. Was one of those jaw dropping moments where you just watch and go "really".

Re: Second annual Battle of the Arcades

Was the 1 million pt score on Jr Pac at the 1 hour limit? I played Phoenix a bunch of times this past weekend at an arcade show, but I always did the 200K trick

Yep, Sam's 1M+ Jr Pac-Turbo score was a 1 hour score. He's good.
