Revisiting Nintendo's Arcade History

The Wii's Virtual Console service has a category for arcade games. As far as North America is concerned, that space is currently full of chirping crickets, dust, and tumbleweeds. It's easy to forget that Nintendo once commanded a strong presence in arcades worldwide, because the company seemingly doesn't expend much effort to remind us of those years.

Why hasn't Nintendo chronicled its arcade history on the Virtual Console? Maybe it hates money? Maybe it's ashamed of its history? Maybe—maybe Nintendo hates us? (*Sob!*)

The truth probably isn't so melodramatic, though it's not without its share of dog fights. Consider the history of Donkey Kong; the game's original, arcade-perfect release is stupidly hard to come by, unless you can stomach Donkey Kong 64 long enough to find and access the first game in its unaltered glory. Why is that?

It's because Shigeru Miyamoto designed Donkey Kong in 1981, but the game's actual programming was contracted out to Ikegami Tsushinki, a Japanese company that manufactures broadcasting equipment, and was involved in arcade games for a time. When Nintendo began programming its games in-house, it reverse-engineered the code for Donkey Kong, which went over with Ikegami Tsushinki like a brick tanooki. The company sued Nintendo in 1983, and settled out of court via unknown terms in 1989.

In other words, it's possible that Nintendo doesn't own the original code for Donkey Kong, and/or it might not be able to utilize said code because of the settlement between itself and Ikegami Tsushinki. This legal battle, as ancient as it may seem, offers up a possible clue on why Nintendo has been hesitant to re-release its arcade treasures. We don't really know how many games were similarly contracted out, and we don't know how many of those games are potential legal Thunderdomes. Nintendo's lawyers are cautious animals, and no doubt they've warned Nintendo to avoid trouble by simply not provoking it.

For all we know, Nintendo is secretly disappointed about having to turn its back on its arcade history. After all, this is a company that thrives on familiarity and nostalgia. We might never see the Virtual Console Arcade fill up with sweet, sweet history, but we can still dream about the games that we'd love to see there:

EVR Race (1975) -- Horse racing games have always been extremely popular in Japan (and talk about bizarre twists on the sport), but the genre never really took off in North America. Regardless, it'd be nice if we could see EVR Race in some form, simply for its history: this six-player horse racing title is arguably Nintendo's first crack at game development, though the cabinet's expensive upkeep soon made it an endangered species. It's hard to say exactly how Nintendo would implement the game's six-player format, but perhaps the goddess Epona would guide the company's hands.

Sheriff (1979) -- The popular shooting game Sheriff featured characters designed by Shigeru Miyamoto. It wasn't the first game that starred a lone ranger and his delivery of leaden justice, but it was one of the first. It definitely wasn't the last.

Radar Scope (1980) -- Whenever a game history enthusiast digs back in their brains for Nintendo's history, the name 'Radar Scope' inevitably comes to the fore. That's because this space shooter game is infamous for tanking in North American arcades, thereby prompting the company to retool the game. The man behind the redesign was Shigeru Miyamoto, and the game was Donkey Kong. It would be awesome to get our hands on this little bit of Nintendo's past, but Ikegami Tsushinki probably has the rights to the code, so it ain't gonna happen.

Donkey Kong (1981) -- Some game about some monkey in a pie factory, God, who even plays these things.

Mario Bros (1983) -- Maaaario, where aaaare you? Everywhere, and nowhere. The original Mario Bros has been redesigned and ported to almost every conceivable game system, and even the 'Advance' remakes of the Super Mario series includes Mario Bros as a bonus sub-game. However, we have yet to see the arcade game on our consoles, unblemished, pure, virginal, billowing white clouds of sewer steam. Sorry for that mental image.

Punch-Out!! (1984) -- Before an 8-bit Little Mac tore through Mike Tyson and Mr Dream like a tiny wolverine with distemper, the Punch-Out!! series starred a green wireframe guy whose name was whatever creative moniker you could bestow on him with three letters. Go, ASS, go!!

Vs. Duck Hunt (1984) -- Much like the original NES classic, but with the inclusion of a bonus level that let you shoot the dog. Best game, A+++

Vs. Super Mario Bros (1985) -- Out of all the arcade games that Nintendo produced in its early years, Vs. Super Mario Bros would almost certainly pique the most interest if it somehow hit Virtual Console. Though the game looks familiar at first glance, you quickly realize that it's been refined to suck up your quarters. Enemies are quicker, pits are wider, and Koopas roam where Goombas once lumbered. Vs. Super Mario Bros isn't The Lost Levels, but it's twisted just enough to keep Mario veterans on their toes.

This is hard for me to believe as Nintendo has had Namco manufacture arcade cabinets that have Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros. on the same board.

Mario Bros. is probably the best single screen game ever made. I'd love an actual unmodified home version.

I recently passed on an oppurtunity to get a Wide Body Mario Bros. and purchased an Omega Race for the same price instead. What can I say, I love my Vector games

Awesome job on that score. I didn't even realize Mario Bros. had a kill screen and I have a hard time just getting by the first level.

Re: Revisiting Nintendo's Arcade History

Yeah, awesome job, SH is it possible to break a million in that game? Regarding your point about the rights to DK, it's says that they settled out of court in 1989, the game would have come out before then.

Not on the settings I played at.

The game over is triggered by an oversight in the extra life routine, which causes the game to give you a life every frame until your life counter overflows the eight bit value and goes back to zero, at which point the game hands you your game over. It's triggered when the score goes over 980k.

That the simple version. I watched the memory values in MAME's debugger and have the root caused figured out, with memory addresses and everything, but the super technical details aren't really necessary (unless someone really wants to hear them).

FYI, the world record at TG is over 4 million.

So, technically should the default settings be changed to fix that for scores here since there's technically a cap?

If other users start hitting it, yeah, but the next update is pretty far off, and it won't be a problem until other people start making it.

If the settings aren't changed though, it's not a problem because the game here will then become a speed contest since submissions are sorted by score and then by speed.
