Retronauts Live Episode 51: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Admittedly, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within makes for a slightly odd Movie Month choice; after all, the film has little to do with the video game series referenced in its title. And while we could have spent most of this episode complaining about that fact, we decided to look at Hironobu Sakaguchi's confused project as an interesting footnote in both Square and the industry's history. After absolutely destroying their competition throughout the '90s, The Spirits Within marked Square's greatest lapse in judgment, and they haven't made such a costly mistake since -- the fate of Final Fantasy Versus XIII aside. Anyhow, we managed to spawn a great discussion out of this somewhat dull movie, so thanks go out to Marty Sliva, Chris Kohler, and Ray Barnholt for their contributions. And extra thanks for all of you folks who responded to our call-out for comments -- keep your eyes on the Retronauts blog for information on how you can help out on the next episode of Movie Month! (It's going to be a good one.)
