Retronauts Live Episode 40: Super Mario Bros. The Movie

Welcome to the first installment of Retronauts Movie Month; for this episode, I employed the help of Ray Barnholt and Marty Sliva to discuss 1993's Super Mario Bros. To be honest, I retained very few memories of this movie after my initial early '90s viewing, and after seeing it again, I realized why. Bad movies can be fantastic if there's a certain amount of sincere incompetence informing their production, but Super Mario Bros. isn't a good-bad movie. Super Mario Bros.is a tepid, high-budget mess featuring a collection of incongruous ideas that don't make a lick of sense in the long run. Directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel could have captured some of Mario's most iconic moments in an entirely new format, but they instead chose to funnel millions into production designing an ugly world with a handful of superficial video game references sparsely peppered throughout. But thankfully, you can enjoy our one-hour summation instead of suffering through 104 minutes of dull confusion and Dennis Hopper pretending he has withered little dino-arms (he actually does this).

Download episode 40 of Retronauts Live here!Special thanks to Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive for (hopefully) being good sports about our ribbing of their favorite film. I also recommend checking out Nathan Rabin's article about the movie for his excellent A.V. Club My Year of Flops column if you'd like a different-but-still-negative analysis.

Oh, and make sure you check out the Retronauts blog tomorrow; I'll be writing a post where you can leave comments for the next movie in our series. See you then!

As always, If you'd like us to read your letter on the show and/or feature your envelope art on our blog, write to:
