Retronauts: Hyperkin SupaBoy, and RIP GamePro

Christmas is fast approaching, and if you still have a soft spot in your heart for the Super Nintendo, you've just got something new to add to your holiday wish list. RetroCollect reports that Hyperkin's SupaBoy, an unlicensed handheld version of Nintendo's remarkable 16-bit game console, is available on Amazon for a reasonable $79.99. The SupaBoy was designed to offer the most authentic Super NES experience possible, taking official cartridges and including two ports for Nintendo's classic dog bone controllers. The system uses 21st century screen technology for a crisp image, and a cartridge lock holds each game firmly in place, addressing two of the most damning issues in Sega's well-intentioned but appallingly designed Nomad.

The SupaBoy has been well received by gamers so far, with the only complaint being a high-pitched buzzing sound from the system's internal speakers. It's not known if the noise is a manufacturing fault in the first run of machines or just an unavoidable design flaw, but either way, this problem can be dealt with by plugging in a set of headphones or connecting the system to a television set. If that's not a deal-breaker for you, you can find more information about the SupaBoy at the official Hyperkin web site.

Also, we have some sad news to report. Independent gaming news site GameSetWatch has gone on indefinite hiatus, with editors Simon Carless, Danny Cowan, and Eric Caoili all offering a fond farewell to their readers in the site's latest (last?) post. As if that weren't enough of a downer, IDG has halted publication of its monthly, then quarterly, then... uh, neverly magazine GamePro. GamePro was originally written for younger gamers, and was frequently disparaged for its screaming face review system, stunningly obvious "pro-tips," and obsession with silly puns. However, in its later years, the magazine shifted its focus to mature players, with carefully researched articles by respected journalists like 1UP's own Nadia Oxford. It's unfortunate that GamePro was cut down at the apex of its evolution, but the editors deserve credit for getting the magazine to that point. Both publications will be missed.
