Retronauts: Bloody Roar and Bloody Roar 2

Furries are the preferred target of ridicule on the internet... in fact, it's become so common that this mockery has spilled over into prime time television, with every show from CSI to American Dad! taking a shot at those wacky guys in the bunny suits. However, from the jackal gods of ancient Egypt to the recently revived Thundercats series on Cartoon Network, history has proven time and time again there's a little bit of furry in everyone. Front all you like, but deep down inside, you can't deny the appeal of a guy who kicks ass, then transforms into a bloodthirsty beast that kicks even more ass. What else could explain the epic three month run of Manimal on NBC?

Okay, maybe that's not the best example, but the Bloody Roar series certainly fits the bill. Published by Hudson and developed by Eighting, Bloody Roar was a pearl hidden in the sea of 3D fighting games for the Playstation. If you owned a Sega Saturn, your choice was pretty much made for you' every system came with a copy of Virtua Fighter 2, the best game of its kind by a wide margin on the console. However, if the Playstation was your poison, you had a lot more titles to sift through before you could satisfy your need to kick around vaguely human papercraft. Did you go with the button mashing brutality of Tekken, the deadly elegance of Soul Blade, the frantic, free-range battles of Ehrgeiz, or the unflinching realism of Bushido Blade? So many choices, so little money! And so little room for Bloody Roar on many players' short lists, it seems.

If you missed it (and you probably did), let me catch you up to speed. Bloody Roar is patterned after Sega's Fighting Vipers, an entry-level fighter with the depth turned down and the flash turned way, way up. Careful technique and lengthy combos take a back seat to blows with the crushing impact of a wrecking ball, and the playfield is surrounded by walls that struggle to hold in the chaos. However, while the cast of Fighting Vipers come to each battle in plastic armor, Bloody Roar's stars have a much cooler trick up their sleeves. Tapping a button turns these already formidable fighters into snarling man-beasts, doubling their strength and making their attacks more vicious. Disciplined kung fu master Long loses all sense of restraint when he transforms into a tiger, thrashing enemies in his jaws before slamming them to the floor. His sensei probably wouldn't approve, but I sure as hell do!

Naturally, an ability this cool has its limits. You can only break out your beast form after filling a bar at the top of the screen, and once activated, the bar drains with each hit you take. Once the bar is tapped dry, it's back to humanity you go, whether you like it or not! It's up to the player to decide when he needs the edge the beast form offers in combat, giving Bloody Roar an element of resource management that had been missing from previous 3D fighters.

I had fond memories of the sequel, but the quality of the first Bloody Roar came as a big surprise. It's a little rougher around the edges than Bloody Roar 2, with noticeably blocky characters, and eight is a pretty slim number of fighters in 2011 (or 1998, for that matter), but it was nevertheless a strong foundation for the rest of the series. Every attack rolls off the fingers and onto the screen with little effort, and the presentation is every bit as slick as its better known competitors. Afterimages trail you when you deliver an especially devastating knock-out blow (or, uh, receive one), and gates are torn off their hinges when you send your opponent flying through them. These special effects crank up the intensity and help the game stand out in a field that frankly had gotten a little crowded before even it arrived.

Of the improvements Bloody Roar 2 brought to the series, the graphics are by far the most significant. This game looked just stunning on the Playstation in 1999, with gouraud shading that smoothed out the characters' pointy edges and gorgeous playfields like an aquarium that would not only be revisited in a future sequel, but borrowed by competing games (Dead or Alive 3, I'm looking at you!). The cast was also spruced up, with most of the dead weight trimmed away and other characters heavily revised. For instance, ballbreaking boar mechanic Mitsuko has taken an early retirement (to the Jimmy Dean sausage factory, perhaps?), replaced with an equally tough but far more attractive lady leopard. On the redesign front, gender-mangling assassin Fox was given new life as the high-flying, clothing averse bat Jenny. Funny how that fur seems to grow in just the right areas to keep this game from getting an AO rating'

There are other changes worth noting, although they're not always for the best. Swapping the unremarkable Beast Rave mode with super moves was a smart decision, adding a layer of depth to beast transformations and giving you yet another stylish way to send your opponent to the pet cemetery. On the other hand, it wasn't too bright to switch the commands for launching blows from simple joystick and button combinations to half and quarter circle motions. They're tough to pull off on Sony's split D-pad, and it's a hassle you don't need when an angry lion is leaping for your throat.

Also, and this is just personal preference, I would have liked to see more variety in the cast. It's a little cat-heavy, and by 'a little cat-heavy' I mean 'Can I has cheeseburger and everything else in the refrigerator?' A lion and a tiger are practically a necessity for a game like this, but a leopard borders on the edge of redundancy, and a house cat falls right into that pit. When you've only got nine characters, the choices you make are critically important, and making half of them felines does a huge disservice to fans of other animals. Why not a nice cranky badger or hyena? If you're going to step outside the boundaries of mammals like you had with Stun the Insect, why can't you offer a crocodile (better than a street punk chameleon, I say), or a shark, or the ridiculous-yet-surprisingly-deadly cassowary?

Hell, I might as well get this on the table right now' there's been one HUGE omission that has yet to be addressed after a decade of Bloody Roar games, and its continued absence cuts like a dagger with each new release. If Hudson ever releases another Bloody Roar game (and after the fourth one, that's not likely. Yeech), it had better be this one'

Re: Retronauts: Bloody Roar and Bloody Roar 2

Mitsuko is awesome! I was mad they never used her again. It's pretty obvious that they wanted all their female characters to be the typical comic book/anime half naked hot chick, lame. They even ditched that transgender character. They totally caved. Btw if you wanna play her again load up Beastorizer it's Bloody Roar 1. I almost beat it with Mitsuko but it's pretty hard on one life. The rabbit girl Alice is really good too, fast easy combos.

Kinda hard not be a badass when you're like eight feet tall with sideburns and you can change into a lion.
