Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

Resident Evil: Revelations will be the first 3DS game priced at $50.

A Capcom representative told Kotaku that the reason the game has been priced at $50 is that "Resident Evil Revelations is an all new Resident Evil title with over 20 hours of gameplay, and cutscenes beautifully rendered in fear-inducing 3D". He elaborates, "A true console experience on a handheld device, Resident Evil Revelations is an epic title that offers both a single-player campaign for that classic survival horror gaming experience, and an additional RAID mode that can be played cooperatively or single player. To handle all of that data Resident Evil Revelations requires a 4GB cartridge, resulting in a higher price point."

The game will be released in North America on February 7, 2012.

Yeah....I don't see this selling.

Expect more of this, it will sell well and encourage more companies to follow the trail of cash.

I like how they are trying to use the higher price tag as a selling point.

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

I don't see upgrading from a 2GB card to a 4GB card costing an extra $10. Especially when you can go to WalMart and buy a 4GB SD card for $7.

The average consumer is not going to care or even notice what size 3DS card RE:Revelations uses.

Edit: Also, are we sure that that is indeed 4 gigabytes (4GB), and not 4 gigabits (512MB)? I think I read somewhere that the max supported cartridge size for the 3DS is 4GB. The largest DS cartridge I know of is 512MB (Ni no Kuni), and it seems strange to me to see such a sudden jump in capacity in such a short time.

The original source (Kotaku) says 4GB and not 4Gb so that's what we have to go on.

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

All right. It just seems somewhat infeasible to me; the old DS carts couldn't contain a CD-ROM, whereas this purported 3DS cart almost matches a DVD. The 8-fold increase in capacity sounds too big. That's almost more than a Wii disc!

Maybe I'm just behind the technology curve.

Fun fact: Some NES games were actually larger than some SNES games. Dragon Quest IV (the largest ever NES game) is a full 1MB; Super Mario World and Gradius III are both 512KB.

If you think about it as the cost of flash memory from seven years ago to today it doesn't seem as absurd.

Probably not getting it, not because of the price (although that's part of the reason), but my favorite RE character, Leon, is not in it

Yes, but flash memory has been in massive demand for that time period, leading to manufacturers aggressively scaling the technology beyond our wildest dreams back in 2004. Heck, back in 2004 I was still trying to cram Powerpoint presentations on 1.44MB diskettes =X. It's also for general purpose use, i.e. users write whatever data they want, whenever they want.

Also, flash memory chips are manufactured empty, with no data. Mask ROMs are a fixed design for a dedicated purpose, so they are not so aggressively scaled.

It is possible that instead of a mask ROM that flash chips are being used for program storage. Since users can't modify them they would appear the same.

Either way, I'm not claiming it's impossible, it's just my "too good to be true" alarms going off. For every new console debuted that uses cartridges in video game history, the capactiy of its low end storage medium has always been around the highest capacity of the previous generation.

Atari 2600: 1KB-12KB (most were 4KB or less)
Coleco: 8KB-32KB
NES: 16KB-1MB (most probably 256KB or less)
SNES: 512KB-6MB (only two games are 6MB, the rest are 4MB or less)
N64: 4MB-64MB

This also holds true for portables.
GB/C: 32KB-2MB
GBA: 4MB-32MB (Mother 3 may be the only 32MB game)
DS: 16MB-512MB (Ni no Kuni may be the only 512MB game)
3DS: 2GB, 4GB - ????

This is an interesting discussion =).

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

Keep in mind that the price of games (excluding dlc) is one of the facets of gaming that has improved over the years. This game in question is priced at less then half of what I paid for FF 1, and that was over 20 years ago.

The 3ds is less of a jump than the previous systems, percentage wise of course.

Old article but it was speculated to be up to 8 gb:

"Devs should have plenty of space to work with when creating games for the 3DS. Macronix, the manufacturer behind the 3DS software cards, has revealed that the cards will hold anywhere from 1GB all the way up to 8GB. This is a considerable upgrade from what the DS had to offer. Hopefully most devs won’t find any issues when working within these limits! Thanks to HandheldPlayer for the heads up!"

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

With ROM chip storage (and not discs) all storage capacities must be a power of two. That is, 2^N bits.

But thanks for that article, it's good to have an official source. Now my only question is whether or not that 8GB (almost a dual layer DVD!) is a hard limit by technical restrictions on the 3DS, or only the biggest size Macronix can manufacture right now.

Technology is exciting!

It is a capital B. If you put 3DS:RE on this chart it would double the size of 3DS launch.

I don't know, a game that takes a lot of effort to create and sells moderately well for $50 is not as profitable as a game that is easy to make and sells well for $30. That is going on the assumption that this game took more effort than typical games.

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

Mask ROM manufacturing is a lot different than manufacturing an empty programmable flash chip.

Per unit cost is cheaper than flash, but there is a high one time cost of creating an initial design with a manufacturer. With flash you can buy huge amounts of empty chips (and they are cheap now) and program them at your leisure.

You are saying that they are using the cheap flash chip but in their sales talk citing the outdated hardships of ROMs for the price hike, right?

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations to Cost $50

I said it was possible. I don't know for sure. I said it because if the end user (i.e. the player) cannot write to the memory and modify the data, then flash memory becomes functionally equivalent to a mask ROM.

Buying empty flash memories in bulk would allow content creators and distributors to create and program as many copies as they need and not a chip more. The downside is that flash is a bit more expensive per part, and it also has a higher chance of failing because the data is electronic, and not based on a physical and mechanical fixed layout.

Mask ROM requires a large investment at first to create the design. After that, the cost per part is cheaper than flash. If you sell enough parts then you can make back the initial cost and make more profit than with flash. But only if you sell enough, otherwise you are left with worthless left over stock nobody wants and you must liquidate for a loss.

The computer manufacturing industry calls this 'economy of scale'.

Here is a very crude visual aid.
