Remembering Salvatore

I started replaying The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker immediately after finishing Skyward Sword; not to lament a series that's incrementally changing, but to celebrate one of the great titles of its past. While the Wind Waker's art style may have asked too much of some series fans, I found exploring the high seas of Hyrule a delight and a great opportunity to discover all its little secrets.

Last week, I bumped into shop owner Salvatore on Windfall Island and played his board game-inspired mini-game for the first time since 2003. While diversions such as this aren't new to the world of Zelda games, how could I ever forget a shop owner that put so much energy into his work?

By reenacting the objectives of his mini-games with cardboard cutouts and dramatic flair, Salvatore framed a great preamble around simple games that burst at the seams with personality. His penchant for drama helped the mundane feel more fun, even if I was only playing a video game version of Battleship.

We could all learn something from Salvatore, so I've included video embeds of this memorable character from both the Japanese and English language versions of Wind Waker. Take a moment and remember a fun and energetic shop owner that truly enjoyed his time in the spotlight. Also, use the opportunity to marvel at YouTube user Wnivre and at his mini-game prowess in the video of the American version.

Re: Remembering Salvatore

I love the sarcasm of the article that almost parallels that of Salvatore's.

I love the character; easily the highlight of intended Zelda humor.
