Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition Looks Surprisingly Solid

We published an article last month detailing how Nintendo could potentially change the way we celebrate gaming milestones by giving us a Kirby 20th Anniversary disc that mirrors the comprehensive features found on a Criterion Collection film. While nearly every company has dropped the ball when it comes to celebrating a franchise's birthday, Nintendo has delivered notoriously lame remembrances to their gaming past. We should expect more, and companies should be able to deliver compilations worthy of their subjects.

Well, details have finally leaked regarding Kirby's celebratory package courtesy of Siliconera, and while it's not quite what we hoped for, it's certainly a lot better than Nintendo has been known to deliver in the past. The package in North America will be called Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition, and if its contents mirror those of the Japanese version, then it will feature titles spanning from the Game Boy to the N64. The Japanese disc will contain Kirby's Dream Land 1 and 2 (Game Boy), Kirby's Adventure (NES), Kirby Super Star and Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES), and Kirby 64. While it's a bit sad not to see some of Kirby's stranger SNES titles as well as the phenomenal Canvas Curse for the DS, having these six games is certainly nothing to scoff at.

Unlike Nintendo's lackluster celebration of Mario, this disc isn't just a mere port of something gamers had on the SNES nearly 20 years ago. Six full Kirby games that range from good to amazing, plus the inclusion of a soundtrack and booklet make this a step in the right direction as far as video game compilations are concerned. As these details currently only pertain to the Japanese version of the game, they need to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, we'll be seeing Kirby's Dream Collection in America some time in September, and it's safe to assume that its contents will mirror those of its Japanese counterpart. While it may not be the start of our medium's Criterion Collection, Kirby 20th Anniversary looks to be a welcome addition to any Wii owner's library.
