Re: kickstarter games

Does it piss off anyone else, that all these companies with lots of successful titles under their belts are using Kickstarter?

Whats next? Doritos needs funding to develop a new flavor?

Re: kickstarter games

Putting projects on Kickstarter sidesteps giving an external funder control of your product, and gives the product to an audience that is willing to pay for it, instead of putting it out on the market (and all the risks associated with it) and hoping that it sells.

And that's wrong, it's supposed to be about giving the little guy a "kickstart".

Re: kickstarter games

So which part is "wrong" about it?

Is it wrong to use Kickstarter to allow developers to create the game they want instead of the game big publishing houses like EA and Activision want?

Perhaps Kickstarter is also about "kickstarting" a project that otherwise publishing houses wouldn't want to touch or would try to turn into another generic, by-the-numbers, cookie cutter?

Re: kickstarter games

i don't have a problem with companies using kickstarter i think it is great cause the games will be greater with a larger budget to work with it and not like the people funding don't get stuff in return they get the game and if the spend enough they might even help with the making of the game.

that 2nd quota what mighty series are they talking about

Mysterious Cities of Gold - The Video Game! by Ynnis Interactive — Kickstarter

Death Road to Canada - Permadeath Road Trip Simulator by Rocketcat Games — Kickstarter

Neverending Nightmares by Matt Gilgenbach — Kickstarter

Hot Tin Roof: The Cat That Wore A Fedora by Megan Fox — Kickstarter

I'm waiting eagerly for one of the localization companies like Xseed or Aksys to start using Kickstarter campaigns to let people decide what games they localize.

One thing I dislike about Kickstarter is the stretch goals. I get why they are needed but I hate when I hear that a cool feature didn't get added because they were short some donations. If it's gonna make your game awesome and generate more money it only makes sense to add it. Leaving it out makes me feel like we're getting an incomplete game.

It's the digital age, anybody can put any game on a multitude of platforms on their own.

Kickstarter was originally supposed to be for someone trying to start something. I remember when it first started I donated 25 bucks to some dude trying to start a business selling his Christmas cards...

Now we are about halfway down the path to funding the new Mountain Dew flavour.

Their are companies using their established name to take advantage of people, they are just thinking "hey, free money". While taking donations away from people who are just trying to get a foot in the door.

Does anyone else understand what I am trying to say?

I don't get it.

A kickstarter project is only successful if people fund it. If a new flavor of Mountain Dew was funded, then it was through the choice of people. I'm willing to bet that flavor would have come out anyways and didn't even need support, so in this case I would say the backers made a dumb choice. Dew wouldn't be doing any harm to other Kickstarter projects, they would be doing harm to people who do stupid things with their money.

If what you're saying is that these kinds of games could have been made anyways, then look at it this way: If you back the project by as much as the game will cost not only to you help fund additional work to be done on it, but you'll also get a copy of the game when it comes out. Essentially it's no different from buying the game other than the fact that some of the proceeds go towards making the game better.

Honestly though I did not expect this to be your complaint. I thought for sure you would be bothered by the fact that Kickstart projects can potentially fall through or not return on the project at all.

Re: kickstarter games

This summerizes my issue:

"There is currently a highly successful Kickstarter live to fund a new Indie-movie by Zach Braff of Garden State fame. The Kickstarter smashed through its 2 Million Dollar goal in less than 3 days.

Zach Braff has a huge fan-following, served an incredibly well-made Kickstarter video and is now reaping the Kickstarter rewards.

Zach Braff, however, is also a multi-millionaire. Moreover, he already had a “traditional” financing deal for his movie from a studio, which he turned down in favour of doing a Kickstarter-campaign."

Basically, it's starting to go down the path that big companies will have no need for overhead, since the will no longer have development costs.

On the other hand, yes if you do get a copy of the game/movie/product with your donation, then yeah cutting out the middle man is fine I suppose. I don't know, maybe it's a better business model in the grand scheme of things.

I guess the only thing that doesn't sit well with me is that it should be there to help the little guy, and it seems to be getting further and further away from that. Eventually it will come full circle, and there will be a need for a new Kickstarter, since the original one will be just big companies.

Mountain Dew would receive 100 times the donations that some little guy just trying to get a bottle of juice on the shelf would get.

Now we are about halfway down the path to funding the new Mountain Dew flavour.

Their are companies using their established name to take advantage of people, they are just thinking "hey, free money". While taking donations away from people who are just trying to get a foot in the door.

Does anyone else understand what I am trying to say?
While I agree with what you're saying, the issue isn't people and companies taking advantage of this, but the fact that people are still backing stuff when this happens.
Don't blame the game, blame the players. (in this instance)

Re: kickstarter games

@Steven: But its not really taking away from the smaller projects. It's not like people are saying; "I have this $20 I plan on spending on a kickstarter today. I was going to back this smaller project that needs funding but instead I'll drop it on this campaign that's already 200% funded."

I don't think these larger campaigns are detracting funds from smaller projects but instead introducing more and more people to kickstarter. In essence, "larger games" (honestly Shantae and Inafune aren't household names even when that household is a gaming household) are bringing more traffic and thus more potential funders to the smaller projects.

The people who benefit from kickstarter campaigns are developers and gamers, not publishers. You out of anyone I think should be able to appreciate that.

I can appreciate that, and if you are correct in your assertation, then I would have to retract my opinion.

No more negativity from me on the subject.

Re: kickstarter games

River City Ransom has added in stretch goals:

$205K - Apple® Mac™ and Linux™

With the recent announcement of SteamOS, Linux is even more of an interesting choice for developers. And of course, we can't ignore the many folks who love their Macs. Our game library is well traveled in the *nix space, so we are confident in our ability to deliver this stretch goal.

$280K - Sony® PS4™ and PlayStation®Vita

Our original goal remains unchanged. The technical complexity for this goal is higher, but the effort involved paves the way for future platforms.

$320K - Nintendo® WiiU™ and 3DS™

Our initial talks with Nintendo have been encouraging, and we have heard from many vocal and passionate fans of the platform. We have said that River City Ransom: Underground belongs on Nintendo, and with the right resources, we can make it happen.

$360K - Microsoft® Xbox One™

Based on Microsoft's new Independent Developers Publishing Program, and the foundations laid in previous stretch goals, it looks like clear sailing to reach fans on this platform at this level.

$390K - Sony® PS3™

The current generation PlayStation 3 is a platform in its own right, and we don't want to ignore it. This level will give us confidence to ship on this console as well.

I like how it says it belongs on Nintendo but for 40-70k more they'll put it on it's competitors consoles too.

I don't understand this comment. Suddenly you take issue with multi-platform games?
