Jet Set Radio Heading to XBLA and PSN

Finally, all of the virgins you've been sacrificing to the gaming gods have finally paid off. The official Sega blog released a teaser video confirming that Jet Set Radio is on its way to PSN and XBLA. The short clip hypes up the next Dreamcast game to be digitally released, culminating with a shot of JSR's iconic radio logo. The 22 second snippet is all we get -- there's no news regarding a release date, updated graphics, or additional features. Despite this lack of information, we've gathered two of 1UP's resident Jet Set Radio aficionados to give their opinions on the announcement and posit on what may be in store for downloadable release.

Marty Sliva: Way to take your sweet time, Sega. Jet Set Radio is one of the classic gems of the Dreamcast, and the fact that we had to wait over a decade to replay it is a bit ridiculous. That being said, I'm stoked to see that it'll be back in our hands at some point in the near(ish) future. While the video doesn't give any indication of whether the game is going to be a straight port or feature updates up the wahzoo, the pessimist is curbing my expectations. Judging by recent digital Dreamcast releases like Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi, Sega is perfectly content with giving us the same product we played way back when. As much as I'd love to see an HD update to the fantastic art design, I'm not holding my breath.

Bob Mackey: Out of all the old Dreamcast titles Sega's released on XBLA/PSN, I don't think they're going to pick the re-release of Jet Set Radio as the time to put forth more than the minimal amount of effort. That said, I'll just be happy to play the damn thing again, since right now the only option involves digging out a creaky, old Dreamcast that's buried deep within in a storage bin. I am a little worried, though, if the game will hold up outside of its outrageously cool style. Back in 2000, I didn't get through more than half of JSR, because most of later levels turn into a series of very precise jumps using imprecise controls. I'm definitely going to try and stick it out, if only to explore the decent-sized chunk of the game I left unplayed.

Marty: A big question coming out of this announcement is whether or not we'll be seeing Jet Set Radio Future make its way onto XBLA and PSN. The merits of JSRF are oftentimes a point of contention here in the office. It got so bad once that we had to divide the room in half with masking tape -- seriously, it was like an episode of Perfect Strangers. I fall on the side of good, or, those who think that JSRF is a worthy successor to the original. This visuals and soundtrack set a high bar early on in the life of the Xbox that was rarely rivaled. That being said, the game did strip away much of the challenge found in the original -- paint sprayed at a mere button pressed as opposed to after a series of complex controller inputs. Honestly though, whether or not this title will appear down the road on PSN and XBLA doesn't really concern me. I still have my copy for the original Xbox, and it's the only title that still makes its way into my 360.

Bob: Sega probably won't be making any changes to this version, but it would be spiffy if they could find a way to map the "camera" and "paint" commands to different buttons -- to me, this has always been a curious design choice that didn't make sense back on the Dreamcast. And while missing Offspring music made the re-releases of Crazy Taxi significantly less fun, we can sleep soundly knowing that a team of Sega experts is currently hard at work removing Rob Zombie's Dragula from a game where it never should have reared its ugly head. Finally, the mistakes of history can be corrected -- and hopefully, not at the cost of removing all of the other great licensed music in the game. A Jet Set Radio without Guitar Vader is not a Jet Set Radio I want to play.

Re: Jet Set Radio Heading to XBLA and PSN

Im still irritated that they skipped Saturn. I mean they are releasing Genesis and dream cast games but they totally skipped the Saturn. Meme moment: -rage fist- SEGA! Why U no Rerelease Panzer dragoon?
At the moment though the only dream cast games I WANT to see come out are Sonic shuffle, and Seaman.
