Charging Headlong into the Dangerous World of Black Tiger

Pop quiz, hotshot! You're a mighty warrior, fighting to save the kingdom from a shadowy evil. Throughout your adventure, you'll be trailed by skeletons, demons, and mummies, all eager to strip you of your armor, then strip the flesh from your bones. Considering all that I've told you, what game are you playing?

If you said "Ghosts 'n Goblins," you'd be... wrong, actually! I was describing another Capcom game, the overlooked arcade release Black Tiger. Beyond the fantasy setting and clothing-optional hero, the two titles are as different as night and day. While Ghosts 'n Goblins and its sequels are known for their ferocious difficulty and memorable set pieces, Black Tiger prides itself on lengthy, intricately designed levels packed with hidden treasures and nasty surprises. Boulders fall, carnivorous plants burst from the ground, and toxic slimes drip from the cavern ceilings, punishing reckless advances and making each moment tense. There was also a near console-like depth to the action thanks to shops and weapon upgrades, a refreshing change of pace from the flat, mindless beat 'em ups buckling arcade floors in 1988.

Black Tiger also cemented the style of artwork that would become Capcom's calling card throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Before 1988, the graphics in Capcom games were hugely inconsistent, wavering between the simple cartoon artwork of SonSon and the more ambitious but decidedly offputting quasi-realism of the original Street Fighter. By contrast, Black Tiger's graphics had an air of confidence and professionalism about them. Characters were rich with detail and brilliantly animated... flames lept from the shoulders of demons and coiled vipers crumbled into bones after being slain, bringing a sense of wonder to the medievel setting. More importantly, it forged a path for future Capcom games, one not abandoned until the CPS2 hardware was introduced in the mid 1990s.

Despite its innovations and the quality gameplay at its core, Black Tiger never got the love it deserved from gamers or even Capcom itself. There were home conversions, but mostly for home computers, and mostly lackluster efforts by third parties. Capcom did plan its own port of Black Tiger for the NES, but nothing exists of the game aside from one promising screen shot in an issue of Game Players' magazine. The game wasn't officially released for home consoles until Capcom's outstanding Capcom Classics Collection 2 for the Xbox and Playstation 2, and by then, its time to shine had long since passed. It may never be as popular as Strider, Final Fight, or its cousin Ghosts 'n Goblins, but Black Tiger is still easy to appreciate after all these years. If you didn't catch it the first time, fire it up on Capcom Classics Collection 2 and see what you've been missing.

"My mind is my weapon. My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer and I have my mind... and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge. Thatís why I read so much, Jon Snow."
