Chain World

Chain World Videogame Was Supposed to be a Religion—Not a Holy War | Magazine

It's a long article but kind of interesting.

I lived with Jia Ji, player 2, for a couple weeks last year.

Extreme short version:

There was a game design contest with the theme "Games as religion".

One entry was a copy of Mine Craft on a USB thumb drive. You play the game until you died once, and then you give the USB stick to someone else and you never play again. You shape the game world for those that come after you and then you leave. Only one copy of the game exists and only one person can play it at a time.

This game won the contest and the designer gave it to a random person in the audience, Jia Ji.

As the sole owner of this new game he came up with a new idea.

Sell the game to the highest bidder on ebay. Proceeds go to charity.

His idea was you sell the game to one person on ebay, and then that person sends it to a person in the game industry, and then that person sells it on ebay, repeat. Always going back and forth between a professional game developer and ebay. And all profit going to a charity.

The original game designer (and many others) was furious that his product was monetized.

The guy he gave it to was confused how people could get upset at raising money for charity.

In the end, it seems very much like a video game as religion. The original creator instantly has his vision altered by his loyal followers into something he disapproves of. I think there is a great lesson in there somewhere.

Re: Chain World

Is Jia Ji super short, or is the developer super tall?

You'll have to excuse my insolence, but I don't see how religion comes into play.

Edit, I re-read, he's super tall.

Both.

Religion was the theme of the contest. Not any real world religion. Just getting people to react to the game as if it was a new religion.

Here is the description of the game from the article
Quote:
How do you make a videogame that, in some sense, is a religion, especially if you’re an atheist? Rohrer began by defining the sort of spiritual practice that interested him, which had to do with the physical mysteries of everyday human experience. Rohrer spoke about his late grandfather, a colorful man who served as mayor of a small town in Ohio and left behind a legacy that soon turned into legends—the house he had built and the interstate whose path he had altered, forcing it to swerve around his town. (“It’s like my grandfather’s dogleg,” Rohrer said, putting up a slide of a bend in I-77.) In Rohrer’s family, these physical places had been turned into shrines of a sort. “We become like gods to those who come after us,” Rohrer told the crowd.
.hed { color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 1.2em; font-weight: bold; margin-bottom: 0px; }.hed2 { color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 0.8em; line-height: 1.4em; margin: 0px; }ol.chainworld { margin-bottom: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight: bold; font-size: 1.1em; }ol.chainworld li { margin-bottom: 10px; }.cw_indent { display: inline-block; margin-left: 18px; }.cw_normal { font-weight: normal; }

He wanted his game to encourage players to contemplate the monuments of those gods, which meant that he needed an environment where you could build things for future players to stumble across and ponder.
I don't think I could have come up with a better idea that fit the theme. Anyone else have a game idea that would have had a chance of winning?

Re: Chain World

I think the idea is brilliant and I'd love to be a part of it, but I wouldn't be inclined to pay.

Sadly it's the kind of lesson that would be ignored by the people who need it the most.
