Beyond Mana: Hiroki Kikuta's Secret of Mana Plus

Shortly after posting my interview with Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta last week, my iPod's rotation happened to bring the album Secret of Mana+ into play. Never one to fight fate, I took this happy coincidence as an opportunity to really listen to and absorb my favorite video game arrange album of all time.

Secret of Mana+ is a fascinating work. Technically, it's a remix of Secret of Mana's soundtrack, but it's radically different from the standard arrange album. Rather than simply being orchestral, danceable, or hard-rockin' renditions of video game music, it's a 50-minute soundscape that hearkens back to some of my favorite albums from the '70s. Kikuta mentioned that progressive rock and Mike Oldfield were particular influences on his work, but I'd already managed to guess that much just from this single project.
