Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

The Verge: For Amusement Only: the life and death of the American arcade

I enjoyed reading about how she thought that a large contributor was the growing trend of overparenting here in the US, I had never considered that before.

Picture is unrelated (London arcade in 1979), it's just fitting to go with the topic.

Re: Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

I never really visited any proper arcades growing up, they didn't really exist here at that time. I mean, there's the crappy ones they have in bowling alleys that I tried out, but they were just overpriced garbage.

On a side note, dear god don't let this turn into the mess that is the death of gaming thread -_-

Re: Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

Love the old picture, looks at those clothes!

I think the reason a lot of people stopped going to arcades is the cost. I know my friends and I got sick of wasting money on games that were jacked up to the highest difficulty so they'd eat our money. Towards the end we only went to the arcade to play the new fighting games. Even then it wasn't all that fun, long lines and a long wait if you lost.

Re: Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

I think the arcades fell simply because consoles caught up to them in terms of horsepower, as it were. No reason to go when you could get a similar experience at home. But I do think they will come back, like we see here in there in the form of barcades, but I think that at some point over the next decade or 2 every city will have at least a couple.

Huh? The only thing that looks out of place is that the guy has his shirt tucked in. But I agree cool photo, that marquee is amazing.

I think he's talking about the picture in the article. Could be wrong though.

Re: Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

I mean the guy and the girl with their backs to the camera. Those clothes are totally late 70/80s. Plus the cars.

Also yeah, the pic inside the link is hilariously old school. I used to wear that stuff, not by choice really though.

Re: Article: The Life and Death of the American Arcade

I'm just noticing how cool that webpage is, nice design.
Yeah I remember the time when all my friends had moved on to the longer surf style shorts, and I had to beg my mom for a pair. I remember her coming into the living room one day with a big smile holding out my first pair of those patterned surf style shorts, oh man I was excited.
