Wikileaks

Is anyone following this stuff?

For one, Wikileaks has been under attack by "ddos" whatever that is, and apparently they are percevering. I think the idea is that the U.S. has been trying to stop the site from revealing secrets.

The U.S. has already issued statements to several countries including Canada, warning them in advance that some things might be revealed,
that a lot of countries are not going to be too happy about.

I'm really excited about how this is all going to phase out, I believe the recent internet policing that has been comming out of the U.S. (witch aparently Obama is against) where they are going around and shutting down sites that are not evn from the U.S., is probably related to all this.

Kinda a split topic here but let's keep it as one.

Where does the U.S. get off thinking this is something they can just do if they feel like it? If anything this is going to come back to bite the U.S. in the ass, there are some insane haxors out there and they sure as hell don't live in the states. I just hope Canada's close proximity to the States is going to be an issue when the internet starts banning U.S. ip's in huge numbers.

I'm not all that learned on either subject but this seems to be shaping up to something that might be quite revolutionary, and I'm excited to watch it all unfold.

Re: Wikileaks

Ddos is "distributed denial of service" attack. Basically a ton of computers make requests from the site at once flooding it. There are things you can do to defend against it.

Has it been confirmed that the US government is responsible for the ddos? That is something you can be jailed for and it would be really hypocritical of them to do that if it is in fact them doing it.

Okay thanks for the info, I'm not sure if the perpetrators have been identified, people are just pointing the finger at them cause they are the obvious suspects I think. Could this just be the result of a ton of people trying to get the scoop from Wikileaks first hand?

Yes, that very well could be if enough people were trying all at once, but it is unlikely.

I believe the term you are looking for is "1336 h4x0rz" or something like that.

Back on topic though:
I doubt the attack is at the hands of the U.S government, but the government has been making steps towards gaining control of the internet, looking more intensely for cases of piracy, passing bills that give control to the government if a "National Emergency" is declared. E.g: If someone were to post a thread on 4chan about how to build bombs, where to get the materials and then say what would make good targets, the government would be able to take down the site and also get the I.P. addresses and use them to track the posters down.

On one hand I get it, but on the other you have to realize that everyone on 4chan is harmless outside of the internet, no trolls are going to go out into the real world or take the effort to build a bomb.

I just think it is going overboard, and things are about to get a hell of a lot worse:
Some of these links are a bit more JG's style, and some are not.

Basically, it works like this: If something is posted that infringes copyrights, it would be okay to shut down the site, even if it was minor and a site say hosted games that are copyrighted, even if the copyright is expired.
Sound familiar?
Well, let's say that site has a catchy name, and a neat little mascot in it's logo, one that resembles Robotron.
( Click to show/hide )

It has yet to be passed through, yet if it were, we'd all be screwed.

Re: Wikileaks

Thanks for the input DM, for future reference, (in this topic) let's refrain from just posting a bunch of links that might require a half hour of reading, and include a breif summary of what they are saying.
That's one thing keeping me from researching these subjects, I'm a needy person and like everything simple as possible.

Re: Wikileaks

I wouldn't be surprised if the US government is behind the ddos attacks. Like it or not they're trying to protect stuff that they want secret, can we really blame them for trying? So far I haven't seen anything from wikileaks that is a direct threat to national security, just indirectly by pissing off our enemies. That being said though I bet something big is on the horizon and it might endanger US troops or other personnel. In that case I think a government has a right(duty?) to protect it's secrets.

I know some people believe in 100% transparency from those in charge but it's not reality and it never will be. Some secrets are better left untold.

Sorry DB but that is a rotten attitude, The people are supposed to control the government, not the other way around. I want everything on the table for everyone to see.
Troops dying because of leaked information is alot better than the reason they are dying today.

Does that include top secret military projects? How about information about undercover agents? Where is the line drawn?

You just can't have everything available to the general public, that's naive. Secrets are one of the most important currencies, all countries have them and want more.

What reason are they dieing for today? Do you think releasing damning secrets will take the place of this reason or make it much worse for little or no gain?

A DDOS attack does look similar to that, but a good server admin should be able to easily tell the difference.

The US gov does have the best motive for the attack but it would be stupid of them to do it. They would know it would make them look bad and not accomplish anything, the info will get out regardless of the attack.

I agree, when it comes to the wikileak stuff it requires too much reading. Cliffnotes are a requirement for normal people. This current issue alone is 260,000 documents.

DB, I agree that the gov needs to keep some secrets to function well. But no where near as many as they have. The previous wikileak showed the US's involvement in torture. Keeping that a secret is like keeping it a secret that your neighbor beats their wife. Telling might create some drama but it is worth it.

Here is the page that talks about this current issue
Cable Viewer

Here's some interesting scary stuff I found while looking up wikileaks tonight.

Stuxnet Stuxnet

Summary, it is the first known entry in cyberwarfare. It is the most advanced computer virus ever discovered. It is so advanced that it must have been created by a country. It would require a highly skilled and highly funded team months to create. Unlike most advanced viruses it's goal was not mischief or profit. It was designed to attack Iran and probably caused a "serious nuclear accident" at a nuclear power plant in Iran. It might have destroyed an Indian satellite. Currently there are 6 million computers in China that are infected by it. It is designed to mutate and update itself and evolve and so far is unstoppable from spreading. Very smart people are trying to contain it and can not. It is continuing to spread fast. The suspected creators are Isreal or the US though there is little evidence besides motive and capability. It can spread to any Windows computer but only attacks industrial equipment connected to the infected computer. After it attacked Iran a version of the virus was traded on the black market so now there is terrorist group with this power too.

So the idea is just random destruction? That's insane.
On the radio today they were talking about how heavy into the heroin trade the U.S. government is. I didnt hear the story myself, but I got the news from someone who heard it.

---------- Post added at 07:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:33 PM ----------

I just read a poll on msnbc:
"Should Wikileaks be concidered a terrorist organization?" 70% say yes
Please tell me this is a made up figure...

---------- Post added at 07:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 PM ----------

I just read the first 10 or so comments, and they all voted no. Man the corruption is out of control.

No, the exact opposite. The virus is very targeted. The Iranian nuclear power plant was the target and it was a success. If there are future targets, they are unknown, at least to wikipedia.

1 - Most of the general public could not handle 90% of the secrets that are being withheld from them. You want to start riots, chaos and the like, let a few of those whack-a-doo's behind the velvet rope.

2 - Troops dying in any capacity is not a good thing.

Re: Wikileaks

The virus targets machinery that would be in a nuclear power plant and connected to a computer. It does all kinds of crazy complicated things to make the virus work but the stupidest part about it, all of that machinery is password protected and all the virus does is try to enter the default password. And it worked. To stop the virus, all you have to do is not use the default password. Who would be stupid enough to not change the default passwords in a nuclear power plant?

Another stupid password blunder - someone got Sarah Palin's email password by knowing her birthdate and school that she went to.

If you are doing something important, learn how to use a password.

@Sabby, What is better. Having your government do things that you would be willing to riot to prevent without your knowledge or with your knowledge.

If it is with your knowledge then maybe you can do something to make sure it will not continue. Without, and well, ignorance is bliss I guess.

I would rather do something to make the real world better than live in a fantasy where I am being lied to. Even if I can not make the real world better, I would prefer live in truth than comfortable lies.

I want the world to be a better place for my daughters to live, but do riots and protests REALLY change anything. I see those in third world countries, do those do anything but kill people? "Yeaaa, I'm rioting because my elected officials are doing something secretive or something I know and do not like, now I'm dead." Whether you have the knowledge or not, the results are the same, the only thing that would be different, in my opinion, would be the paranoia level.

The fantasy world you are talking about is the real world you live in today, yesterday and tomorrow. The world is full of lies, and no matter how much you teach/preach honesty, you will never have it all the time. Do I like it, absolutely not. Would I like to change it, absolutely.

The rules/laws as I see them are to protect the masses from the few. Most normal people do not wake up thinking, "I am going to kill someone.", that is why rules/laws are made, to prevent those people from hurting the masses.

Not sure if I answered your question Kong, but those were a few points that came to my mind.

The worst part is that this type of attack is nothing new, this exploit has been in use since the 1980's.

Read The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll.

"Stoll was amazed that on many of these high-security sites the hacker could easily guess passwords, since many system administrators never bothered to change the passwords from their factory defaults. Even on army bases, the hacker was sometimes able to log in as "guest" with no password."

Re: Wikileaks

@Sabby, I think hiding gov secrets for the most part does not make the world safer for your daughters.

The terrorist that attacked on September 11 were very clear about why they were doing it. They were upset at America's foreign policy and were attacking back the only way they knew how. America was able to convenience the average citizen that they attacked us because "they hate our freedom" (which doesn't even make sense) but they did not convenience the world that that was the reason and that is dangerous. If instead the average citizen knew the real reasons we were attacked then we might do something real (I don't mean rioting) to prevent future attacks instead of giving terrorists and countries more reasons to attack us and having security theater (see TSA thread) to make us feel safe.

To be clear, this was just one example, I am not siding with the terrorists or saying they were justified or right. They were flat out wrong. However, I am taking the controversial stance that America's hands are not as clean as we say they are and that is not cool. I think knowing they are dirty might make us wash them. Hopefully.

I don't think it would happen, at least not right away. Too many people have the "us vs them" mentality. Combine that with irrational patriotism and you have a recipe for not caring about world opinion.

Re: Wikileaks

250,000+ classafied documents that include documents that deal with covert agents, diplomatic issues, miliatry personel and defense?

If this is true not only should the government tear it down but they should haul in the site owner and poster for treason and conspiracy amongst other things.

Re: Wikileaks

If I remember right they already have a soldier in custody who is accused of stealing/leaking these documents. The owner of Wikileaks is from out of the country and there are charges filed against him that some people claim are fabricated to get him locked up. I think he's accused of assault and rape? Something like that. I think people are already working at full speed to nip this in the bud.

Re: Wikileaks

So most of you prefer to be lied to?

The people that run wikileaks read through every document and make sure to the best of their ability that they are authentic and will not jeopardize security or anyone's cover. They contacted the government and told them, hey we are about to release these documents, if you think there is anything in the papers that will place anyone in harm, let us know now. The US refused to talk to them.

To date, not one wikileak has caused someone's life to be in danger or blown anyone's cover. They are careful.

In short, Tenser, you are jumping to conclusions and wrong.

That's one thing keeping me from researching these subjects, I'm a needy person and like everything simple as possible.
Bill Text - 111th Congress (2009-2010) - THOMAS (Library of Congress)
S. 3804: Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (GovTrack.us)
American University Intellectual Property Brief U.S. Senators Continue War On Internet with ?Online Infringement? Bill
On Internet Censorship : ACTA and COICA | The Moderate Voice

Okay, these ones will be most helpful.
The first one posted is the text of the bill itself, basically it is a very aggressive piece of legislation regarding infringement of intellectual properties. If the bill passes and it is taken very seriously, RU is at risk.
A good sized read, not going to kill you, but it is a bill attempting to be passed through congress, so it is fairly long and somewhat comprehensive. Short for a bill.

The second is simply the status of the bill, what organizations oppose and support it, how close is it to passing and so on.
Not even five minutes to read, you can ignore it if you don't care what organizations support it and whatnot.

The third is an analysis and predictions of it's potential and probably effects if passed. According to this, even sites that don't directly host illegal content can be punished if they are taking part in it in any way, like torrent search sites.
Five minutes or so of reading.

The fourth is the relationship between the bill and a similar, pending ratification, treaty that does very much the same thing, but on a worldwide scale.
Once again, about five minutes. It seems a bit overboard in the conspiracy department, but it has decent information.

I hope this saves you a little bit of time.

You've stated a lot of facts and absolutes there. Back them up, prove it.

Show me that the people who run Wikileaks have read through the entirety of over 250,000 documents and that each reviewer's judgement on what does and does not jeaopardize someone's security and/or cover is perfectly reasonable and clear. Show me that to date not one person's life has been put in danger or cover blown because of Wikileaks. This is not something that can be proven or disproven. Don't state it like it's gospel.

Did you even bother to read my post before you responded to it? I said if this is true they should be harshly dealt with. What conclusion did I jump to?

In short, Kong, you are making blanket assumptions and wrong.
