Textbooks and guns!

AUSTIN — Texas is preparing to give college students and professors the right to carry guns on campus, adding momentum to a national campaign to open this part of society to firearms.
More than half the members of the Texas House have signed on as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2009 and is expected to do so again. Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he’s in favor of the idea.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

Good.

I'm sure some of the crybabies will say this will lead to more Virgina Tech incidents. I think the opposite will happen.
The majority of kids going to colleges that would actually own and carry a firearm are probably come from families where firearm safety is taught and they would use firearms for self defense. Plus, if some wacko started shooting, at least other students would have the opportunity to defend themselves.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

I agree. I'm for being able to defend yourself at any moment. Even if that moment happens to be at school. That being said, I probably wouldn't own a gun anyways. I'm more of a knife and swords guy. I'd carry a bow and arrow if that was allowed though.

I think the real concern is adding more highly lethal weapons to a volatile place like a college campus. Yes it can prevent and help deal with random gunmen but it also adds more chances for people to resort to using a gun when they're having problems with others or themselves. Not everyone who owns or wants to own a gun is responsible.

Btw what does this mean for the lower schools like high school? Shootings happen there, should we arm teenagers too?

Re: Textbooks and guns!

You need to be of legal age to carry of fire arm. Giving the security guards a gun at schools might be a better option then.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

Yeah but some high school seniors are 18. Also doesn't legal age vary from state to state? I know when I went to school in Maine for a couple years kids had full gun racks in their truck windows, parked in the school parking lot.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

In order to drive a car you have to have insurance.

The idea is a car can cause some expensive damage to someone else, therefor you need to make sure you can cover the cost of that damage before you start driving the car, just in case.

Why not mandatory gun insurance. If you own a gun then you have to buy insurance. This insurance would pay for all damages your gun can cause - stolen and used in a crime, child accidentally uses it, someone is wrongfully shot, you use it in a crime, you use it for suicide. If any of those events or similar events happen then the insurance pays damages to the victim or the victim's family. The insurance companies compete in a supply and demand market to set the price of how much this would cost. Anybody that wants to pay the insurance can have a gun.

This might be a Canadian thing, but I would not be comfortable walking around a school where half the students were carrying guns.

I agree with you steven. From my years in school I've known far too many unstable people to feel comfortable with this. Seems like heavy handed solution.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

1. I highly doubt it would ever be 50% of the students packing.
2. I would never want to go to a school or work place or store or restaurant or any other non-gun establishment where anyone has a gun.
3. I vote we change the spelling of restraunt. The first time I realized I didn't know how to spell it took me over an hour to figure it out with a spell checker. Now that I know how to spell it I still need the spell checker to fix it every time. Stupid French infiltrating our language.

Wouldn't tasars or mace or riot guns that shoot rubber bullets accomplish the same thing as a gun for self defense?

Re: Textbooks and guns!

I believe the point of the guns in school agenda is so the people can defend themselves by putting the person down for good in as little time as possible. Non lethal methods don't always work like a simple bullet does.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

What are they so scared of anyway? The only reason to bring a gun to school with you is if all the other students have guns! It's a friggin school not a warzone.

Drunken frat parties sure will get interesting. Could you imagine Revenge of the Nerds if they all had guns?

So what excactly is the reason for this anyway, is your government just trying to hurry up the proccess of becoming the next Somalia?

That is what happened in Britian, so they took guns away. Now all of the criminals carry knives. The number of stabbings, muggings, and other petty crimes have been on the rise every since. Petty criminals feed on the weak and defenseless. Take away a persons method to defend themselves and the criminals will thrive.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

So the argument is Americans need to carry guns in order to protect themselves from criminals that carry guns?
Then couldn't Brits just carry knives to protect themselves from criminals that carry knives?

Really, the argument is pretty weak. If I mugged someone that might have a gun then I would just walk up behind them and put a gun to the back of their head and take their gun. If you put a gun in most people's face they will be too scared to do anything even if they are also packing.

If you have a gun and a wallet and someone points a gun at you and says give me all of your money. Is it really worth the risk to pull out the gun instead of just losing your wallet.

Odds are that all of the money you lose in your entire life that you could have prevented if only you had a gun at the time will be less than the price of a gun.

Ghettos are full of guns yet there is more, not less gun crime there. According to the gun nut argument the more guns you have the less likely they are to be used. Just is not true or logical.

Re: Textbooks and guns!

Then couldn't Brits just carry knives to protect themselves from criminals that carry knives?
If the laws are consistent with Canada's then all they're allowed to carry are short lock blades - a nearly useless thing to have in a life threatening situation.

Ghettos are full of guns yet there is more, not less gun crime there. According to the gun nut argument the more guns you have the less likely they are to be used. Just is not true or logical.
Mmmm, I don't know ... Ghettos have something other places don't: extreme poverty and the desperation that generally goes with it.
Because of this I don't think it's possible to apply the same set of standards.
I've heard two sayings which could be applied to their situation:
'When you're broke, you break'
and
'When Americans lose everything, they lose it!'

My updated set of recommendations:

1. Optifine - allows you to tweak display settings and certain game elements giving excellent game performance even on 32 - bit systems.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...and-much-more/
2. Custom NPC's mod - create your own NPC characters in Minecraft.
Fully customizable, meaning you decide everything: type, size, skins {compatible with most skins made for 'Human Male', like Steve, so you can use skins people upload to PMC and other sites}, assign jobs, factions, etc, etc.
All this and it adds numerous items such as weapons, armor, food, quest items, and more.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...-npcs-splanmp/
3. MACE city generator mod - a standalone program which generates worlds with cities. {NOT just random like it says, they're fully customizable with dozens of city options - why do they say random when it isn't?}.
There are 3 basic themes {desert, medieval, and Novv - sort of medieval with lots of detail} and you can insert 1 - 100 cities of your choosing into generated worlds.
Name the world or leave MACE to give it a random name, insert a world seed, tweak the options to make them contain only what you want them to, then create a profile so you can duplicate your favorite cities again later!
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/...ies-generator/
4. Tale of Kingdoms mod - I consider this to be part mod, part city generator; the mod inserts a medieval style building {into either a new world or an existing save file}called the Guild.
The Guild is the starting point of the RPG aspect of the mod.
NPC's in the Guild inform you that you are the King who must complete certain tasks in order to gain the trust of your people.

Once you gain their trust {by gaining enough in - mod 'EXP', basically} you can then choose the site of your Kingdom, which you provide the raw materials to build.
There are 3 tiers to the Kingdom, expandable as soon as materials become available.

IN CONCLUSION:

These mods used together hold HUGE potential both on or offline and the best part is that you can do what I did:

Use MACE to create a world with a city {or cities}, then install the TOK mod, play to gain the Kingdom, and then uninstall TOK and use the Custom NPC's mod to make your own characters, storyline, whatever!

And in case you were wondering it is possible to have both mods running at the same time, but your custom characters better be tough enough to stand up to the TOK hostile mobs!

Re: Textbooks and guns!

If you are in college, chances are you are over eighteen, the legal age of majority. At which point you are allowed to carry guns, and a college campus should be no exception. Imagine how many fewer people would have died in the Virginia Tech Massacre had some of the students been armed themselves and had a chance to defend themselves.

I fully intend to carry a gun at all times once I am of age, which isn't too far away. It's a self defense thing, and a family thing, though my uncle cannot legally carry firearms, you know being a felon and all, he is always armed. Why? Because he is a biker, and people around here are incredibly hostile towards bikers, you need to defend yourself. I intend to own a motorcycle, and I've been told for all of my life that you don't ride a motorcycle without being armed.

Not only extreme poverty and desperation, but also a lot more illegal drug usage and gang violence. Ghettos are not a good example for how anything would affect crime rates, as there is too much crime to begin with.
