realism

What do you believe is realism in film?

I notice two kinds. One is physical realism, which bases the story in scientific reality and thus excludes most sci-fi and all fantasy. The other is emotional realism, which describes how characters behave in and react to situations. Of course, this is a general description. I'd like to know how you view realism in films have or don't have it.

I also notice pseudo-realism, which is ideas which pretend that they're realistic but aren't if one analyzes it. What are your thoughts on that?

Re: realism

I don't care as long as you entertain me.

I kind of get bothered by people who have to nitpick every movie about how it's not real enough and finding holes.

Re: realism

I guess it all depends on the director for me, I can take any circumstance if it's delivered properly.
One of my very favorite movies is Shawshank Redemption, and Rocky 4, and Akira... lol.

Re: realism

I don't like excessive nitpicking either. I mostly do that for laughs and then move on. However, I prefer that characters act realistically like people would in their situations, and not change their character because of the plot. I also dislike when a film claims that it's based in reality, but characters, plots and situations don't happen like in reality, or have obvious inconsistencies with the real-life inspiration. On the other hand, I don't require that a film be entirely life-like, or else I couldn't enjoy films such as LOTR and Star Wars.
