Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994, Four Billion Miles Away From Home

Everytime I come to this picture I always stop and stare at it for just a little bit to always put things in perspective.

Carl Sagan's words are powerful in context with this image.

Powerful words by Carl Sagan | Smartkit Puzzles and Brain Teasers

( Click to show/hide )

If you look carefully at the NASA photo below, you will see a little white dot. This minute speck is Earth seen from the Voyager 1 spacecraft as it exits the solar system, nearly 4 billion miles away. The photo was taken back in 1990.

Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.
– Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994

Re: Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994, Four Billion Miles Away From Home

I don't know how I missed this topic before, my bad oasis. I love that picture but it is kind of depressing in a way. To think how small and insignificant our planet is kind of sucks. I hope we find life nearby so we aren't always so alone.

Btw I like this part-

Here's a quote of Sagans I thought JG might like-
Quote:
One trend that bothers me is the glorification of stupidity, that the media is reassuring people it's alright not to know anything. That to me is far more dangerous than a little pornography on the Internet

If you knew I would appreciate such a quote, then you also must understand why.
DB, you are well on your path to enlightenment, but don't be tempted by the dark side ...
Sagan spoke for many of us in plain Truth, and illustrated Human values which we should all embrace.

Re: Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994, Four Billion Miles Away From Home

@DB

Lately instead of thinking how small we are in the universe I have been thinking how large in scale it is.

We are on the lower end of the size spectrum but there are even things that are immensely smaller than us
all the way down to Einsteins time fabric thread/foam/whateverhecalledit

here on earth there seems to be a limit to how big things can get. but in the universe there seems to be no such limit to large. but oddly enough there is a limit to small.

off shute example. temprature has a cold limit. -459.67 Fahrenheit but ask any scientist what is the hottest temperature limit. none has been found yet.

Yup, we are such an insignificant grain of sand, in a constantly expanding universe.
Everything that has been done, has only really changed what happens on the dot we call "home".
It's rather depressing.

This also gives some perspective on how hard it would be to contact intelligent life. I just hope they're more advanced so they are limited like we are.

I think you meant to say '... they aren't limited like we are.' right?

Yes, as I've said before I expected that we common folk would at least be living on the moon by this point, but alas, we have to stay here for the next 1000 years to 'fight terror'.
Apparently.

I'm saying {again} that we are being held in place technologically as well as being hobbled in an evolutionary sense.
So it's no wonder that we're limited, because everything is going exactly as planned.

REGARDING 'contacting intelligent life', I firmly believe that this happens on a regular basis.
I understand that EU papers regularly report sightings and new crop circles, but all we here in the NAU seem to hear about are disasters, terrorists, or whatever new boogeyman they've {mainstream 'news'} cooked up.

{this guy should go on tour with Slipknot}

I want to see for myself if UFO's and extraterrestrials are in fact 'real'.
I heard somewhere that people in Mexico watch them flying in and out of volcanoes all the time.

{edit}
I remember where I heard that: Nassim Haramein speaking on his unified field theory.
He mentioned it sometime during a 14 hour lecture.

Yeah I meant to say aren't. If aliens are as backwards as most of humanity we probably don't even wanna meet them.

I can't say I agree about the rest of what you said. If we are contacting alien life already why is there no proof at all? Not just pictures or w.e but radio signals or evidence in space of alien activity. From what we can see the universe is dead, sadly.

We are the way we were taught to be, each one of us respectively.
Here in the NAU we are taught:

1. To be good consumers. This one towers over everything else.
and if you're male:

To view physical force as authority instead of intellect.
I could go on, but

NO WAY.
Just kidding. I know we share an interestingly complimentary yet opposing set of views on things.
Like Siskel and Ebert.

I believe that personally because of those documentaries that show the ancient temples whose immense stones were carved with 'laser precision' and bear the marks of machinery we only now are developing {or developing again, it would seem}
In particular there was one temple within these ruins that bore an inscription above the door reading something like:

'This is NOT a temple to a Deity, but a house for a LIVING GOD.', which was depicted as a serpent - headed or reptilian being.
Wanna talk about David Icke now?

I definitely believe that are scientists rely on "best guesses". But i think just having faith like most religion suggests is nauseating. At least the scientific community try to figure out things. Its scary to me that we will never know what the real story about everything is.

Yeah, we got gypped.

I want my money back.

Seriously though, the answers have always been kept from the common person because the ones in control simply don't want us to know.
If you don't believe it, then please ask yourself why 'they' kept the printing press from the 'Western' World for 600 years.
{the Chinese had it the whole time}

Humanity is being held in place technologically and hobbled in an evolutionary sense by the ruling class.
That's why we don't have the answers.

Re: Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994, Four Billion Miles Away From Home

Guess what, we are going to have to deal with not knowing stuff for as long as we exist.
We don't know what is beyond the end of the visible universe, all we can say is that it is 'dark energy' and 'dark matter' which is a fancy way of saying, it is unknown and can not be know.

We don't know the sun is made up of Hydrogen and Helium, but using what evidence we can gather, we have speculated that it is. The only way to know is to take a piece of the sun and test it for it's composition, which is something that cannot be done.

We also don't know that dinosaurs and primitive plants were brown and green.
A T-Rex could have been orange with purple pin-stripes, and the trees could have been hot pink with splotches of dark blue.

We don't know what the core of the Earth is composed of, but we can assume what it is made of based upon what evidence we can gather. You cannot know what the core of the Earth is, until you've been to the core of the Earth.

The point is that we cannot know what we cannot know, and what we cannot know we can only fill in with guesses based upon what we do know.

There is good evidence of a big bang, and solid evidence that stars form inside nebulae due to the influence of gravity.
There is no solid evidence that there is a god, but that is why religion is called 'faith', because they believe in it despite any proof otherwise.

I like to only believe what there is evidence of, and preferably solid evidence.
