Mega Men vs. Grumpy Old Men vs. Shining Force
in Team Contest II - Dodgeball I

This is a contest for teams only.

The winning team members will receive badges and a tally will be kept counting the total # of first, second and last place standings your team receives.

General rules of regular dodgeball:
Two teams line up on either side of a line. Balls are placed on the line. A whistle blows and everyone races for the balls. If you get one you throw it at someone. If you hit someone then they are out. If they catch the ball then you are out and one of their team mates comes back in. Last team standing wins.

RU rules for video game dodgeball:

There are two stages to this contest.

Stage one: The Strategy Round.
  • Stage one starts now and lasts 3 days.
  • Each team selects eight game genres (choices listed below).
  • The team captains PM their selections to me. Please do so as early as possible so the mods have time to pick the games.
  • The Mods will select 24 games that match the selected genres.
  • These 24 games will be the "balls".
Stage two: The Competition Round.
  • Stage two starts when I post the 24 game balls. Near Midnight EST Thursday. It ends when all the members from two teams have been eliminated.
  • Once the games are posted each person can pick up one ball per day by posting it's name here.
    Example: "I got Tetris."
  • You can not pick up a ball that someone else is already holding.
  • Once you pick the ball up you will have 2 hours to throw the ball at some one on another team.
  • If you do not throw the ball within 2 hours then you drop the ball and anyone else can pick it up.
  • To throw the ball you have to submit a score and then post the score and who you will throw it at. You do not have to wait for a moderator to approve the score before posting.
    Example: "I throw 3,000 Tetris points at Sabby."
  • The person you throw it at can try to catch the ball by beating your score within 24 hours.
  • If they do not beat your score then they are out.
  • If they do beat your score they have to post here before the 24 hours are up or they are still out.
  • If they catch the ball then you are out and they can pick a team member to come back into the game.
    Example: "I scored 4,000. I caught the Tetris ball. Kong is out and I call Tenser back in."
  • They have 2 hours to decide who they want to call back in. The person called in must be out before the ball is caught.
  • In case of a tie the person being thrown to catches the ball.
  • If they catch the ball they can through the ball at someone else. They can use the score they caught it with our improve the score. But they still only have 2 hours to throw.
  • If this contest lasts more than two weeks then we will stop letting you call players back in by catching balls.
  • More than one ball can be thrown to you at once.
  • You can not pass a ball to a team mate.

Bonus
  • In addition to choosing eight genres you can choose one bonus game.
  • The bonus game must be high score enabled and no one on your team can be the current champion of the game.
  • Your team will receive 1,500 points for each bonus game high score you have at the end of the contest.
  • The team captains can divide the points however they want.

does your whole team try to get a score or can only 1 player from each team play once per day?

what im trying to say is each team pick 1 game each so thats 3 games per day and 6 players per day ... 1 thrower 1 catcher per day...

No. Each person can pick up one ball every day. There are 8 people on a team so each day 24 people can throw balls and 24 people can try to catch them.

Also when you select the 8 genres they do not all have to be different. If you want all 8 games to be Shooter/Scroller then you can have that.

Kudos to you guys for coming up with this contest. Seems really awesome.

1 question, can a guy just get bombarded by balls? If one person got a large amount of balls thrown at them at the same time, it could be tough to get in that many scores within 24 hours.

I think that is where strategy will come in. Theoretically, someone could have 16 balls thrown at them.
Of course, the risk in that is that player can "catch" all of those balls within 24 hours.

A 'thrower' only has 2 hours to set a high score...

The more I think about this competition, the more excited I get about it.

The only potential glitch I see is many people might be standing still, waiting for a ball to be thrown at them.
We'll have to see what happens after the first week or so and see how many players get knocked out, but I think there will be a point where we can't allow players to return to the game after getting knocked out.

Yes one player can be bombarded with up to 16 balls in one day. Just like in real dodgeball.
This can be a good strategy. But it can work against you too.

If you throw 8 games at one person and the first one hits them then you just wasted the next 7 throws.
If you throw 8 games at one person and they catch 4 of them then you just lost 4 players. They get to call 4 players back in. And if the 5th game hits them then you still wasted the next 3 throws.
However if you threw 1 ball a day at 1 person they might catch it every time. But if you throw 8 at them in 1 day they might catch only half.

So your call. Do what you think is best.

I did purposfully make it a rule that you could not lob a ball at a team mate and let them catch it which would cause you to be out and a team mate to come back in.

Catching a ball only brings a player back in during the first two weeks. If you get out after that then you are just out.

If you catch a ball and your whole team is already in then you can't call anyone back in. It's not a get out of jail free card that you can save for later.

The score that you throw at someone has to be set during the two hours that you are holding the ball. You can't throw your high score that you got yesterday.

Of course, a unanimous vote from all three team captains and we can change the rules.

I explained the rules to my girlfriend. She said "That's the nerdiest version of dodgeball ever. You can't even get hurt."

She's wrong, sometimes the hurt isn't physical. Dodgeball brings up painful memories for me some people who were picked last in gym class.

I can answer that. You pick up a "ball" say Double Dragon. You have 2 hours to submit a score. When you submit the score you then "throw" the ball at someone on a team. Then that person has 24 hours to posta better score in Double Dragon. If he/she does, you are out. If not, then they are out. If they are inactive then they will not post a score in 24 hours and be knocked out anyway.

In addition to what Sabby said. You have to submit the score and post your score in this thread. If anyone is thinking about requesting an RPG, I suggest you think again. There is nothing in the rules that says you can't request an RPG but first look at the RPGs that are high score enabled. Most of them are just recording your gold as points. When that is the only goal and you don't have save states RPGs are not very fun. Plus you only have two hours to set a score when you throw and 24 hours to catch. Nearly everyone can harvest more gold in 24 hours than you can in 2 hours. So if you select RPG you probably will be wasting a choice. If you still want to request it you can.

And remember if you submit all your genres early then the mods will have more time to pick games and we will appreciate it.

Say someone throws a ball at me, and I beat that score. The person who throws the ball at me is out.

What happens to the "ball"? Can it be picked up again by anyone? Does the previous high score reset itself back to "0"?

thats a good question tanc i would assume the person that catches the ball would keep it and have 2 hours to throw it. 2 hours to better there own score or keep it the same score.

for example i get a tetris and you score 1000 points and i catch it with 2000 i can either throw it with 2000 points or in my 2 hours i can try and get 3000 points and throw it then but either way your throw pick and points must be said in this thread.

We'll need some clarification on this. I would think that once a person beats the score (catches the ball), that person would have a choice to either "pick up" that same ball or leave it and pick up another ball to throw.

I suggest that the scores reset every time a ball is thrown and/or caught. The reason being is that, after the first time a ball is thrown, someone will have 24 hours to set a high score and "catch" the ball. If they throw that 24 hour score back at another player, and not a new 2 hour score, the player who's been thrown at doesn't have the advantage of extra time... Does that make sense?

We are going to need a frequently updated system showing which balls have been picked up (starting the 2 hour timer), and which balls are on the ground waiting for pick up.

This is going to be really fun, perhaps a little confusing, but most definitely, AN ALL OUT WAR!!!!! I can't wait!

and i can monitor a new thread and update it with scores and such because im practicly on all day anyways... so ill probably do that and the mods can modify it as well...

I was originally thinking that you catch it and then automatically drop it and then anyone can pick it up but the score resets to zero.

But I like both of your ideas better.

If you catch the ball you have to either
a) say you are setting the ball down and not throwing it or
b) you have 2 hours to either use your current score or set a higher score and throw it at someone.

You can not pick the ball up unless it is on the ground. The score resets to zero every time it touches the ground.

You can't pick a ball up unless it lies on the ground.

I will make a new thread just for the states of the ball. Keep all comments in this thread and all ball activity in the new thread. It will be confusing but hopefully that will make it more fun.

The reason I gave the 24 hour advantage to the person trying to catch is because they might not know they are being thrown at right away. If you don't check in at least once a day you might be knocked out.

Also when you call someone back in you should know their schedule. They might get knocked right back out becasue they are still offline.

Also I was thinking of making it like real dodgeball where you don't pick who comes back in, it goes in order of first one knocked out is first one to come back in.

I think this is the easiest method to follow. I'm OK either way, but I think we should stick with this method.

Oh, Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

This is the rule (unless all three team captains disagree with me):
If you catch the ball you have to either
a) say you are setting the ball down and not throwing it or
b) you have 2 hours to either use your current score or set a higher score and throw it at someone.

That seems more like real dodgeball rules which is what I am trying to base everything off of.

i think you should just have one person who can revive people and if they beat someone only they can call them in.

this way there wont be issues of this being way too long.

Those rules are fine by me. Now, say I throw a ball at someone and they can't beat my score (drop the ball). Does that ball fall to the ground, and reset to zero? Can anyone pick that ball up? I think the answer is yes to both questions.

If I catch a ball can I hand it to a teammate?

I don't like the idea of being called in on a rotation. I've always played where you call a teammate back in of your choosing.

Also if there's also only one person who can call people back in those three wil get swamped first. It wouldn't make it very fun.
