Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Twenty-five years prior to the beginning of the game, Empress Endora conquered the continent of Zetegenia. During her reign, a resistance organization called the Liberation Army forms to free the continent from her rule.
At the beginning of the game, the protagonist, whose name, gender, and other characteristics are chosen by the player, takes command of the Liberation Army. Throughout the course of the game, the protagonist is joined by various other characters, such as Lans Hamilton, a knight who served the king of Zeltenia until the king’s death; Warren Moon, a wizard with the ability to divine the future; Tristan, the rightful prince of Zenobia; and many others.
After the Empress is slain, it is discovered that she was manipulated by Rashidi, a dark wizard in the Empress’ employ. The protagonist defeats him, but before Rashidi dies, he uses his blood to release Demundza, the king of the Underworld who was sealed away after the first great Ogre Battle. The protagonist and his army manage to seal Demundza away again before he can become too powerful.
There are more than one possible outcomes to the story depending on various factors such as the player's alignment, their reputation, and which character they choose to recruit.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Word up. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask here and I'll be glad to help if I can.

My first piece of advice is be very careful during the first few levels. Your mages are super strong and will make short work of enemies if you set their unit up well BUT if they kill too many too fast their alignment will drop to zero and they won't be able to upgrade. I think you need a minimum of 10 ali to promote, maybe some charisma too. To be safe just keep them equal or one level higher than the enemies and keep checking their stats after each fight. If the numbers start dropping make them fall back.

Another helpful hint, if a unit is giving you a lot of trouble just switch your tactics to leader. When the leader dies the unit has to slowly crawl back to base and you can destroy it at your leisure. Also if a leader of one of your units dies don't let it slowly march back to base. Have another unit intercept it and swap a character. If you have another character that can become a unit leader you can switch and have control again.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Nah I think we decided that any of the endings is good because they're all pretty difficult to get. If you go all good you have to play a few more levels and be wary of how you fight. If you go evil you get worse units, less money and it hurts your interactions with NPCs overall(which is significant). It was made to have multiple distinct endings so I think it should be cool.

Thanks for the tips DB! I'll take a try to master this game. Should be fun I beat the first level, but that's not saying much. Still have a while to go, I assume

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

I'm pretty sure you're messing with me but just in case I'll explain it-
The creator of the game really liked Queen and he made the epic decision to name his two games after their songs, Ogre Battle: The march of the Black Queen and Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together.

( Click to show/hide )

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-SMOsXCc0c"]YouTube - ‪Queen - Ogre Battle (studio version)‬‏[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckRX0k9owAY"]YouTube - ‪Queen-The march of the black queen‬‏[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbT-kn2Yidc"]YouTube - ‪Teo Torriatte (Let us Cling Together)‬‏[/ame]
He evens sings this one partially in Japanese, damn he was good.

I got two more important tips-

1- Unless you're going for the evil ending(which is difficult) don't fight with your leaders unit unless it's an emergency. If his levels rise too fast you'll lose reputation and you'll be seen as invaders rather than liberators. Killing units with tarots cards also gives exp to your leader so be careful with those.

2- In the level Sharom District you can get a very good hidden character named Canopus. You have to visit all the towns and find his sister(you'll know when it happens) and then find the hidden town to the left of the boss castle(without going too close and sparking a fight with him, go above and around over the water). He'll refuse, go talk to his sister again, then back to him. Once he joins you need to deploy his unit and have him beat the boss. Doing it this way gets you Canopus and the boss, Gilbert. I hate to spoil anything but he's basically a main character you should get. He's so important he's even in Tactics Ogre. It doesn't matter if you miss him but you might as well.

I beat this going down the path of evil. I had a horrible reputation. I really didn't care so long as the towns I "liberated" payed their dues.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

If you go the path of good you make more money, just an fyi.

Btw guys here's so more advice-
Golems suck.
Hellhounds are ok but not worth keeping more than one.
Octopus also suck. They are awesome in water but there's only one or two water levels and even then a flying unit is better since water units are horrible once they hit land.
Giants kinda suck. They can be decent and they hit really hard but they tend to miss a lot and they take up two slots, not that worth it imo.
Dragons seem to suck at first but if you level them from the beginning they can be one of the most powerful units in the game. Even if you recruit them later on they're still good.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Get a dragon of each type. Snow dragons are super useful in the later levels. I had two just because they helped so much with the movements. Air units are the way to go though. I had tons of ghosts and gryphons. Samurais and Paladins are good to have around too. Ninjas not so much unless you really know how to use them. In and out fast attacks are their best mode of attack. Don't have them fight long battles since they have a low hit point.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Snow movement type is pretty limited though. When you say later levels you mean like the very end. But regardless of movement the end game dragons, all types, are just awesome. I like the evil ones, Tiamats. Team them up with three mages and it's a steamroll unit.

Btw I got a Crown on the 4th level, that's pretty rare. I now have a princess on level 3 that will end up awesome because of the early stat gain. I also got a Stone of Dragos to make a Dragoneer but I have to wait until like level 15 to use it.

Anyone else getting any cool items? Btw you guys should use the buried treasure guide to get all the gear you can. It's not cheating it just cuts down on you having to trek back and forth across the map.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

How'd you lose? If you explain it I can probably tell you how to improve your strategy.

For every level I make most of my army head for the closest town to the boss. The other one or two units, high flying, I make flank and keep an eye out for random enemies that try to sneak by. If you make one of your flyers go right near the boss castle at the start you can see where all the enemies are heading. Just don't get too close and spark the boss. Get used to how much line of sight you get.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

I liberated two towns and then 4 groups of enemies appeared. There were four battles, I won the first three, but I lost the fourth because I didn't realize who my leader was and that if they died, it was game over.

Do you recommend using the cards during enemies or boss battles? Do they replenish after every level?

---------- Post added 07-04-2011 at 12:08 AM ---------- Previous post was 07-03-2011 at 11:51 PM ----------

I died again o.o

I deployed two different units this time, but this enemy went around my other units and attacked my weakened, leading group. I probably should have had a unit protecting my leading unit.

Is there a way to heal your unit? At a temple?

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

How many units do you have total? You should have at least 6 early on and more if possible. Ten is max in a battle but you should probably have like twelve in case of emergencies.

Unless you're going for evil don't fight with your leader. Leave him sitting on the home base to guard it. He'll get exp when people die from tarot cards. If his level is lower than the enemies it's ok for him to fight.

You get cards from liberating towns. You can also buy a Joker from the shop but that gets expensive. Just save them for emergencies or boss fights. Remember that killing enemies with cards gives all that exp to your leader.

To start you should send the bulk of your army to the closest town to the boss. They'll stay together and if one loses a fight the next one takes over. Pause when you lose a fight so you can make them start moving again asap. Pause a lot. There's no shame in it, it's actually heavily encouraged for this kind of game.

Temples allow you to resurrect dead characters, for an increasing fee. You can buy revives but that gets costly. Friendly towns heal units sitting on them, temples don't. Usually one town will have a shop, click a unit sitting on the town and the hand with a coin should appear with all the other commands like recruit. You can buy two different healing items that can be used outside of battle. The only way to heal in battle(besides with clerics) is the empress/priestess cards.

On most screens pushing select(space bar) identifies an item so you can see what it does.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Okay, thanks a bunch Dudebro. My main problem was probably that I was using my leader unit to kill all enemies. I have 6+ units, not sure how many though. I'm not going for evil, so next time I'll try with more units and without using my leader unit. Thanks again DB!

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

So any updates from people playing this? I'm very interested in how the game is playing out for different people.

For me I'm about to fight the 8th level, Island Avalon, and my leader is level 2(the enemies will be around level 10). This is from never using him besides sitting on the home base. I did kill a few enemies with cards out of desperation so that accounts for the one level.

Everything has been awesome so far since I found the crown item really early. I did lose control of the Slums of Zenobia battle though. One of their high flying units slipped by me and took three towns before I could kill it. The last one was my fault because I didn't finish the unit off and it got knocked closer to the third town. Not a huge problem but I lost 15 reputation points, 5 for each. Another unit got by my front line but I used a bell item(recalls a unit to the base) and cut them off before they could attack my leader.

@Tails- Yeah it's pretty heavy on the strategy. You set up the units and control where they move but they fight automatically. Depending on where you position characters they'll do different things. It's not really that complicated but it requires some planning and tactics. It's fun and unique, worth a try at least.

Re: Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - July 11'

Regardless of good or evil if you play carefully until level 10 you can get a bunch of Mages(promoted wizards) that hit the whole enemy unit. You just gotta keep their alignment above 10 and below 35. If they're getting to high level just make them hang back and avoid fights or leave them out of the battle all together. It's worth it.

Once you promoted the units you're grooming you can do whatever you want really. My mages all have 0 alignment now that I don't have to worry about it.

Why would you even think it's like that game? Strategy is a very broad term and Disgaea is a very specific type of it.

I got all but one of my wizards to mages except one. The one got screwed up and his alignment went above 55 so I made him into a samurai. He's weak as hell but his back row move is strong from the high intelligence.
Once I got my mages I literally destroyed the boss of Island Avalon. He's supposed to be the first really hard boss fight but he didn't stand a chance. I used the cleric you get in that level(she has a cutscene with the boss), my princess, a mage and two wild men(both storyline characters I demoted and made evil). As if that wasn't enough I used an emperor card to give them another turn. It was not a fair fight at all.

Skip Balmorian Ruins battle as it will freeze your game. At least that's what always happened to me. It blinks when I place the cursor over the icon on the world map.

You tried loading the map and it freezes? That didn't happen when I beat this game for the contest months ago.
