Gain Ground - Jan 12'

In Gain Ground, players control one of a set of characters at a time. There are twenty characters, each with different weapons. To beat a level, players must reach the exit point with at least one character or destroy all enemies on the level before time runs out.
Littered across the level are captive characters, which can be rescued by walking over, then escorting the controlled character to the exit point. If a player controlled character is killed, that character turns into a captive, except that they will disappear if the next active player controlled character dies, exits the level without them, or the player has no characters left in their party.
The game is over when all controlled characters in the party are killed without any reaching the exit. However, there are three continues which allow a player to restart the level with their original three characters.
There are 40 levels in the arcade version of the game. The Master System and the Genesis/Mega Drive have 50 levels in the game.

The SMS version is probably the easiest.

This is specifically for the SMS version but the other versions are very similar.

You are not going to beat it on your first couple tries. It isn't the hardest game ever but it is going to take some practice.

A complete play through is about an hour. You do not have to play perfectly for that entire hour, you can make several mistakes and still beat it. The game is very liberal with extra lives.

There are 5 rounds each with 10 stages. The 10th stage is always a boss. Each round is a different time period.

Learn what everything on the screen means.
EXIT = this is where you are trying to get to.
Icons in glowing boxes on battlefield = these are your fallen comrades. If you carry them to the exit then they join your team. They are extra lives. They are very important. Grab all of them and carry them across the exit.
TM = time remaining. If it reaches 0 then all of your guys that haven't exited yet will die. If you finish the level with more than 100 seconds left then you will get a 500 point bonus. You need this bonus to beat the high score but I wouldn't worry about it at first. Just take your time and be careful. Don't rush.
EM = Enemy remaining both on and off screen. When this reaches zero the stage is over and any remaining character icons left on the screen are lost. You get a 500 point bonus if you kill all enemies in a stage.
STY = How many of your characters haven't reached the exit yet. The stage will end if it reaches 0. You will not get the 500 point special bonus if this reaches 0. And any character icons left on screen will be lost.
OUT = how many characters have reached the exit. No matter what else happens, these characters will play the next stage.
SCR = score.
The bottom right portion is for player two.

If you get hit you will turn into an icon and if you have guys left you can try to rescue the hit character. If you get hit again before you save the icon then it will disappear. So it is very important to not get hit twice in a row. There are no exits on boss stages so if you are hit there then you can't save that life.


Learn what all of the characters can do. Some can lob, some can strafe, some are fast, some are slow, some are more powerful, some can shoot high etc. It is very important to know who to use for each challenge.

Characters:
Red head with a spear = runs and shoots very fast, short range, can lob.
Helmet, visor, rocket launcher = slow, long range, shoots three powerful rockets that spread out, useful when the enemies will stay on the far end of the screen without walls blocking you.
Red head girl with scope and rocket launcher = slow, long range, can shoot high but does not lob or come back down, powerful, can only shoot straight.
Wizard = slow, short range, can create a water fountain that freezes enemies.
Ninja = fast, short range, drops a powerful stationary mine that explodes when touched. Useful against hard to hit enemies that chase you.
Flamethrower = medium speed, powerful, continues to shoot for a few seconds in what ever direction you are facing even if you die.
Boomerang = shoots in an arch. I didn't find it very useful.
Beret with a grande launcher = medium speed, can lob a small explosion, short range
Viking with bow and arrow = fast, can lob, medium range, is the longest range for a lob.
Red head with a riffle = fast, long range, can shoot side ways. One of the best characters.

If you get stuck on a level describe it and I will tell you how I got past it.

The coin op version is really hard, surprisingly. Wizards are everywhere in Round 2.

I beat the Master System version.



The Master System sound chip is just awful on the ears, I wanted to quit just so I didn't have to hear it anymore.

Nah. It is a great game, one of my top 20 or 30 all time favorites, but I am finished with it.

And your score is really good. It could be beat but not by much.

The SMS bonus points are different than the other ports. In Genesis and Coin-Op bonus points increase for every second you save. But in SMS you get a static 500 bonus points if you finish a round in under 100 seconds. Doesn't matter if you do it in 15 seconds or 99 seconds, the points are the same every time.

So the score difference between a perfect game and a mediocre game on SMS are very small while the point difference between a mediocre game and a poor game are big.

I bet the MAX possible score is around 100K.
