That's actually a very good list, I can see the influence of all of the games, and it doesn't mention Halo as the father of first person shooters, a lot of 'most influential' lists do that.

I don't agree with this list besides a couple of them.

That's a really good list, the only one I didn't agree with is Guitar Freaks.

Shame isn't the right word. Fail would've summed it up perfectly.

I'd go with Dragon Warrior.

Can you pick your own party?

I'd go with Dragon Warrior.
Agree, I would even go Ultima before I went FF.

Definetly DW, also Double Dragon maybe in there somwhere. Most of these titles should have been pre 1995

Zelda deserved a place on this list, it was the first free roaming game.

Tetris should be in there.
@SJB: While Dragon Warrior didn't create JRPGs it is responsable for the genre's popularity, mostly thanks to a Nintendo Power give away.

Not even the first free roaming console game.

And as we just found out, the creator of earthbound credit's DW for inspiring his series.

Not even the first free roaming console game.
Wierd, the Guiness Book of World Records of Gaming said it was.

E.T. is free roaming.

Yes, but wrong kind of influence Tenser.

That's opinion. Fact is, E.T. was still free roaming and came out two years before Zelda.

I'll give you that.
But that game was extremely unfinished.

Raiders of the lost ark came out 1 month before E.T. also free roaming.

It was officially licensed and published. It was finished.
Could it have benefited from more development time? Sure, but you can say that about almost any game.

The game was finished, it was a rushed but it was finished.

So did/is Frenzy. I'm not claiming E.T. was the first. I'm just using it as a well known example of a free roaming game released before Zelda.

I know, it's Raiders was the first one to pop into my head so I figured I cite it as another example.

I like Tecmo Super Bowl, but I feel Pacman ahead of Mario is wrong.

Yeah but some would say that without pacman we wouldn't have mario. Not that they're comparable in any way really but without the huge popularity of Pac man the gaming industry might be radically different today.

Pac-Man was absolutely huge when it came out, there were arcades in Japan that were filled with nothing but Pac-man arcades, just 40 of them lined up, all with a crowd around them.
Berzerker
Adventure
Superman
All for the 2600 and free roaming.

Well I think Pong should be at the top if we are talking about overall influence. The effect of Pong is that it was proven that video games could be a viable and lucartive business. Without Pong, the evolution of video games is delayed due to the lack of busniess investments to develop further games. Pong was the first game to go mainstream
Several of the games on this list look like they were put there because they were the most influental in their genre (Tecmo Super Bowl - Sports, Alone in the Dark - Survival Horror, MGS - Stealth Combat, SMB - Platformer) Pong is the most influental because it is the first Video Game to reach the masses.

I would go with Computer Space as number 1. It was the first mass-produced, coin operated arcade cabinet. It set up the functioning design of arcade cabinets to come like Pong and Pac-Man.

If you're going for explosive Japanese popularity, remember that Space Invaders actually caused a coin shortage in Japan.

I completely agree with Tenser on both points.
Space Invaders definitely was more popular.
