What ever happened to the once-mighty SimCity franchise?

Recently I was looking through some boxes and stumbled across a dusty copy of Wil Wright's "Spore" next to an equally neglected copy of SimCity 4. Seeing the two games made me wonder: What ever happened to the once-mighty SimCity franchise? Oh, certainly the "Sim" franchise is alive and well, but it was SimCity that got the ball rolling. These days it's all but vanished from the face of the earth.

I saw sim city societies (5) for 99 Cents yesterday. Would've gotten it but it was a DVD rom and I only have a CD drive. I love sim city. What did happen?

SimCity has always been one of my favorite franchises. I'd love to see a new version come out, but it doesn't sound like there is one on the horizon.

SC4 Rush Hour was very engaging. I could play that game for hours on end. There were a ton of add-ons that you could download, from cool buildings to actual terrain maps of the entire United States.

I haven't visited this site in years: Simtropolis.com - Online City Building Community | SimCity 4 | Cities XL (http://www.simtropolis.com/), but Simtropolis is a great website if you want to maximize your SC4 experience. Just reading this thread makes we want to reinstall the game on my computer and start building!

Nothing happened to sim city. It had a select following it's whole history, and still does today.

There are still Sim City games being released, one of the more recent ones was on the Nintendo DS, I believe.

I have a game saved right now here on RU, and the residents of my city are starting to complain about things ... time to call in Godzilla, I think, and teach those peasants who's boss.
Maybe they'll think twice about complaining again.

I have Sim city, Sim city 2000, Sim city DS (3000 port), Sim city Creator on wii (sixth game I think). They all have their charm for diffent reasons and the pen actually works for the DS on a game like this... For once :roll:

I still think 2000 is my favourite since I had it the longest on the PC at the lake. It's a classic lake game :)

I used to play Simcity 2000 on my old computer, I lost the disc and i could still play it, thats just how awesome it was. Too bad I lost the disc.

Anything besides "The Sims" Seems to be out of Will Wright's view. Sim Ant and Sim Earth seemed to come out of no where for me, I think he should start new ideas and lay off the Sim expansion packs for a little bit. I just hope nothing like "Sim Sandwich" comes up. In fact, maybe that's what he was trying to get at in the Simpsons Video Game.

I was the same way. I never cared about playing those games the "right" way. I would just use a money cheat and build the coolest, biggest city possible.

I never got into any other Sim game than SimCity, and I know I'm not alone. It would be great to see an SC5, but it sure doesn't seem likely. :bad:

I didn't cheat, but I always built nuclear power, and then everyone always left my city.

The absurd points are the best ones, I made it rain space debris everyday at 5:30, just because it was fun,an you can't do that in some of the other city builders :P

Like I said, I never earned much money to build anything in the Sim City games because I normally used nuclear power and randomly destroyed people's houses. I was a vengeful god.

An earthquake every now and then was a fun way to keep the citizens on their toes. :mean:
