British developer Rare has announced that it will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this summer, and has chosen to celebrate this news with a new logo (right) and what will no doubt evolve into a new strategy as the more "casual" label within Microsoft's game studio empire. Interestingly, the roots of the company are technically older than a quarter century. Brothers Chris and Tim Stamper (programmer and artist respectively) founded the company in 1982 as Ashby Computers and Graphics Ltd., and published their first game, Jetpac under the Ultimate Play The Game label in 1983. Initially released for the UK market-leading Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer (which had just 16KB of memory, and later 48KB) Jetpac was later released on the BBC Micro and Commodore Vic-20. Ultimate went on to release a string of hits in the UK before the brand name (not the company) was acquired by U.S. Gold in 1985.
