Yeah, so everyone should just do themselves the favor and go ahead and get this game. Especially if you like sandbox games. Made by Rockstar, it plays similar to GTA, but without a lot of the absolute ridiculousness of GTA. Probably the best game I've played so far this year.

I absolutely love Westerns, and Western games, so I generally have to pick-up every one. I got RDR last week and started it last night. I haven't played a whole lot yet, but it's already awesome.

@ Jim, did you play Red Dead Revolver? It wasn't really sandbox, but it was awesome.

Cool concept. I would play if it was 2D.

What happens if you just ride north for ever? Hit an impassable mountain?

Do you not like any 3D games?

I haven't been able to ride that far yet. The map is immense. I bet it's like Elder Scrolls, though, where you hit mountains and invisible walls. Still a huge terrain though.

What happens if you just ride north for ever? Hit an impassable mountain?yes or some other kind of natural barrier. i prefer that more than hitting an invisible wall.

@bagel, no, i had never heard of it until you mentioned it.

@kong, definately not for you, i get a little loopy when spinning in a circle in that game.

I'm gonna borrow it, I'm cheap like that unless the game is really worth it.it will probably take 30 - 40 hours for so to 100% this bad boy. the multiplayer is really good though. i got really bored with gta IV multiplayer at a few games, but the level up/xp system adds a lot to gameplay to the multiplayer.

Dudebro

I wonder why? Run around mindlessly shooting some morons while they spout the most racist, homophobic stuff I've heard on xbox live. No goals and no accomplishment. Maybe it got better but I played it for like an hour and got tired of it.
I did have fun playing chicken with a car full of people though. I was on a motorcycle and I tried to jump off right as they passed me so I could shoot the car. My timing was off and I ended up faceplanting on the grill. We all laughed but it did hurt my pride a little :(

So what is the multiplayer like in RDR?

jim5cents
05-23-2010, 08:34 PM
it is similar to gta, it has free roam mode which you can run around the entire map (which is huge...probably 2x the size of the gta san andreas map) and kill people if you want. doing so will get you a wanted level. you can also go after gang hideout alone or with friends or strangers. it isn't like a mmo, there is a limit to 16 in a free roam at a time.

there are several multiplayer games, tdm, capture the flag, free for all, a game mode called gold rush (collect points by grabbing gold bags and returning them) and another mode similar to sabotage on cod.

the leveling system is kind of like cod. you get experience for everything, plus there are unique challenges, weapons, hunting, and so on.

the coolest part of is the start of any game, it always begins with a mexican standoff.

i'll check with my brother and see if he still has it, but on gta IV, he had a capture card and we made two clips. one was me jumping off of the brooklyn bridge onto the hood of the cop car, from his pov...in the cop car. the other we called the last boy scout. he jumped off one of the amusement park rides into a helicopter propeller to hilarious results.

In terms of it being Sandbox yes, but because it's a western the whole dynamic is different.

I am sick of the stories in GTA. It seems like each one gets progressively worse b/c everything is contemporary, and also each one gets more and more PC.

It's just preference really, but would rather play a Western or Medieval game over a contemporary gang/crime game any day.

Glad I didn't purchase this game, it's poor. Played it on a friend's console and for this generation, it's pretty poor. Like GTA, it has clunky controls, the graphics are poor, and lip synchronization is poor too.

It's like a western version of GTA III. Rockstar could have improved with this, and what's with the glitches? Had long enough to develop the game, and they even postponed it for improvements.

I think the controls are better than GTA4. One of the reasons is the aim is easier, as the Dead Eye aim (from RDR 1) which helps enormously in aiming.

Dudebro
05-25-2010, 01:43 PM
I read that they have a full auto aim enabled in multiplayer. People on the Xbox forums were complaining about noobs spamming respawns by just pulling the trigger, no aiming needed. How true is that?

I have enjoyed every GTA "sandbox" game I've ever played. I have never been a stickler for spot-on graphics or perfect lip-synching. For me, it's about fun factor. The GTA games have always been immensely fun and diverse, keeping my attention for hours upon hours.

After viewing this awesome trailer, I am confident that I'd enjoy this game as well.

jim5cents
05-26-2010, 12:48 PM
I don't know who said the lip synching was bad, but it isn't. I think it is spot on.
As far as graphic glitches go, I occasionally get an animation glitch.
The only two big glitches I have had was in the scene right before one particular mission and one time when firing the gatling gun. Both caused the game to crash one time. After reload it was fine.

For me, a game is about the fun in the actual game, I can take playing an ugly game with bad lip synch as long as the gameplay is enjoyable.
If the controls are like GTA, I would enjoy it: The controls in GTA were better than I expected for a game with so much to do.

That's good, I hate it when there are tons of glitches.

A decent game that got ruined by glitches was the crap version of Assassin's Creed on the Nintendo DS, I fell through the floor, into *the void, within ten minutes of playing the game.
*the void is the infinite un-programmed whitespace. I was stuck in the falling animation.

Winnebagel

Another game that I personally liked, but was destroyed by glitches was Pirates of the Caribbean on Xbox. I enjoyed the game, but there was this glitch that corrupted all your save files, so very few people were lucky enough to get to the end.

Demon-Mask
05-30-2010, 01:48 PM
I hated that.
There was a racing game that was fun, but there was a glitch only allowing around 96.7% completion, a lot of people got very mad and gave up on the game entirely when they found out that they couldn't get 100% completion.

Kugyince

Wife's take on it:

1. She encountered way too many glitches. Her horse not going over a bridge was the one I remember her telling me about.

2. The honor system is out of whack. You lose honor for things you shouldn't like defending yourself.

3. It got really boring by the time she go to Mexico. By the third "island" it was too repetitive.

All of this means I just get more time to 100% A Boy and His Blob so it works out for me.

Dudebro
06-01-2010, 08:44 PM
1- She must be looking for them or doing odd things. I've been playing for many hours(my gf as well) and the only glitches I've seen are normal ones like getting stuck in the environment when you hit it at a bad angle.

2- You only lose for defending yourself if you cause the innocent person to attack you. I know it's not perfect but a civilian is not ok to kill regardless. I had this happen to me, I was riding my horse and I knocked a guy over. He got up and started shooting so I blasted him. Lost a little honor.
Either way it's not a big deal since it's easy to gain honor back by doing random side quests.

3. Not much to say about this. I doubt I'll get bored with it. I've been having a blast the entire time. Maybe she was expecting too much? This is pretty much a GTA game with a different setting.

It could be a glitch but it could also be a cheat. There's a section for them in the game menu but I don't know how to use them. It seems to polished to be a random glitch. At one point an npc was waving his arms like he's actually flying. I'm calling shenanigans until someone confirms it.

It could very well be, but isn't is nice that we live in a world that DL patches can fix glitches? Back in the day when we played the classic consoles, companies would always try to rush games to get them out by Summer/Christmas, and if they had bugs they could not be fixed.

I just watched a few of these videos, and I have a hard time believing these are real glitches. I think what might have happened is similar to the gta hot coffee mod. The programmers were goofing around and did all this stuff, then left the stuff in the game with no intention of people ever being able to trigger them.

I have had very few problems myself TMT. I believe you. I know there must be a lot of issues since so many people have had them, but I have only seen the one oddity.

However, I seem to fall in the minority in other things too. For example, I don't have RROD problems with the 360, but I have lost 2 PS3's due to them suddenly breaking down for no reason.

Like I said I've heard of this but haven't experienced it first hand. I have read about it but nothing leads me to believe I'm in the minority, in fact it's the opposite. I've been reading the forums for this game since I got it and there doesn't seem to be a large number of people with this problem. Saying I'm in the extreme minority makes it seem like this game is well known to be broken and that just isn't true. I'm sorry it's not working for you and it's annoying but it seems you're in the minority on this one. I wish there was some way for me to help you but I got nothing. Maybe there's a patch coming soon to fix this.

You haven't seen a single glitch or bug? Not even a small one? My gf and I have our own save games. She had one minor glitch where she fell through some stairs after trying to skin a bird on a railing. The only problem I've had is the game froze twice but that's probably from playing for several hours.

I have had a total of three game crashing glitches. One was when fired the gatling gun and I suspect it had something to do with frame rate. Another had to do with an animation when starting one of the hideout missions, basically the Marston character dissappeared. The last caused the game to crash prior to one of the Mexico missions. After reload, there were no further problems.

Sorry RDR isn't working for you TMT. IMO it is a great game, definately worth the 60.

Enjoy that Timber. I am still having fun with it too. I am about 65% through now.

I have had very few glitches in that time. I mentioned most in this thread already, but I had one new one yesterday. I was hunting in the Tall Trees area and I shot an animal. Instead of it staying on the ground, the animal fell through the ground and disappeared. Overall, for me these glitches are few and far between.
