The last 10 years of gaming have shaked the gaming world with outstanding
releases and iconic new characters. But only a few can be called the "Top 10"

"Only a few can be called the top ten", you say?

Not a bad list, but I'd have rather not seen Halo on there at all, or World of Warcraft as number one.

samejamesbond
05-09-2010, 06:12 PM
How so?
Halo changed the industry dramatically.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 06:13 PM
You may not like them but Halo and WoW are huge games of this decade. Has any other game done as well as WoW? Think of how many millions of people play it around the world even though it's subscription based.
Halo is hard to deny as well. It may not be the biggest seller ever but there's no denying the immense popularity it has.

Demon-Mask
05-09-2010, 06:14 PM
So you're saying that Halo did the most for first person shooters, and that it was a top ten game? I can see it on the list, because of how many people liked it, but only at nine or ten.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 06:16 PM
I think Halo made FPS mainstream so yeah it was a huge contribution to the FPS industry. It sounds like you are bias because you hate the game. Ignore how you feel about it personally and look at the way it changed things.

Demon-Mask
05-09-2010, 06:18 PM
No, it's not just my hate of the game, I just didn't think it was anything special, even in terms of it's impact.

World of Warcraft just isn't really a 'number one' kind of game. It is simply good, like Double Dragon.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 06:34 PM
No, it's not just my hate of the game, I just didn't think it was anything special, even in terms of it's impact. It doesn't matter what you think, it did have a huge impact. I agree it wasn't ground breaking or anything but that changes nothing.

World of Warcraft just isn't really a 'number one' kind of game. It is simply good, like Double Dragon. It's like you're completely ignoring the domination that is WoW. No other game can even come close to the amount of people playing and paying for the service. I don't even like WoW but I can accept that it's an undeniable top game of this decade. Name another game that did better?

CatalystiCam

most of the list was mediocre.

jim5cents
05-09-2010, 06:45 PM
the only issues i have is with re4 being at number 3 and devil may cry being on the list at all. i would argue that either fallout 3 or oblivion should be in the devil may cry slot. shadow of the collessus is an amazing choice.

most of the list was mediocre.

don't hate because top gear didn't make the list, every game on that list is fantastic

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 06:47 PM
devil may cry being on the list at all.
I didn't watch the video so I missed this. I agree, what's so special about it? I can't think of anything that would make it best of anything.

Demon-Mask
05-09-2010, 06:52 PM
So, you can say Devil May Cry shouldn't have been on the list, but I can't say Halo shouldn't be on the list?

jim5cents
05-09-2010, 07:22 PM
sure you can say that, i will say you are wrong and all that.

devil may cry is a good game, but lets face facts. it is a button masher. halo had a major impact on the video game industry. may fps mainstream, plus gave the xbox its legs to stand up on.

i would say that a game that is both innovative and successful would be a better selection for that list, oblivion/fallout 3 (you can mix and match those titles), guitar hero, the sims, would all be a better choice than dmc.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 07:26 PM
I asked why Devil May Cry was on the list. After watching the video I can see their point but I don't agree with it.

You can say w/e you want about the list but Halo and WoW are two huge games that are obviously a big impact on gaming. I think to say otherwise you have to have some bias, like I have with DMC.

jim5cents
05-09-2010, 07:32 PM
i would also add that either wii fit or wii sports could appear in place dmc. they have had a much, much bigger impact in light of 1. innovation with motion control, 2. the audience they bring to the table.

i get that part of the reason behind dmc is also the volume of dmc clones that have been released which is good, because it stands as a marker to its legacy, but that legacy still falls well short of the top ten.

every other game on that list i can see on being on a top 100 of all time list, dmc doesn't make a top 100 list, so how can you possible have it on this top ten list.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 07:57 PM
I can see the point about DMC making the list. It's not something I'm into so I can't accurately judge it's worthiness.
About the DMC clones, WoW has many more examples of that. Pretty much every MMO has copied it and some even advertise that way.

Kugyince
05-09-2010, 08:28 PM
WoW didn't do anything that hasn't been done before.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 08:46 PM
Yeah I guess it's so wildly popular because people are just stupid?

TrakMastaTom
05-09-2010, 08:46 PM
I don't think Halo belongs on this list.

Here's why:
Halo didn't really do anything for first person shooters. It just did something for consoles, but not really that much. Halo was a generic first person shooter, but one of the best you could find on a console at that time. But it did nothing PC games hadn't been doing for years. LAN parties were nothing new, co-op campaigns were nothing new, it had all been done before. I'll admit that Halo made it super mainstream, but so what? I don't think it affected gaming's progression much at all.

Kugyince
05-09-2010, 09:00 PM
Yeah I guess it's so wildly popular because people are just stupid?

You called them stupid, not I. I simply stated that WoW has accomplished nothing new in the field of MMORPGs.

Enjoying a game doesn't make someone stupid. Why would you think that way?

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 09:08 PM
I assume that's what you mean because you didn't give any real reasons.

WoW changed the MMO scene dramatically and made it accessable for millions of people who never played MMOs before. It blows Everquest and all the others out of the water. That being said I've never played or and I don't really like it.

TrakMastaTom
05-09-2010, 09:15 PM
I've never played WOW, but being popular doesn't necessarily make something different or interesting. The Spice Girls sold more records than your favorite band. So think about that.

Dudebro
05-09-2010, 09:28 PM
But it's popular because of how good it is. It's very user friendly, it allows for solo or group play, has many options to pay for the service, constant updates both free and fee, highly involved devs and they advertise well. It's a well made game by a great company and they market towards the casual and hardcore gamer. It deserves the number 1 spot for sure. It may not be innovative for gameplay(although people would argue that) but it's innovative for gaming in general.

Kugyince
05-09-2010, 09:32 PM
WoW changed the MMO scene dramatically and made it accessable for millions of people who never played MMOs before.

People had difficulty accessing EverQuest and Ultima Online?

samejamesbond
05-09-2010, 09:37 PM
I don't see why Devil May Cry doesn't deserve a place on this list, it created a brand new
genre that is still being imitated today in God of War, Ninja Gaiden, or Bayonetta.

jim5cents

they sold more records than the beatles?

Dudebro
05-10-2010, 03:49 PM
People had difficulty accessing EverQuest and Ultima Online?
Not actually accessing it to play but yeah those games had a steep learning curve and required a time commitment that most people aren't ready to give to an MMO. It's like how Windows made PCs more accessible to the average user. Blizzard was smart and focused on ease of use and casual play while balancing it with end game content for the more dedicated users.

Like I said before I never played WoW, I played FFXI. Being the direct competition I've read/heard a lot about why it was so damn good. FFXI is an awesome game but it's difficult and time consuming. You can't just log in for an hour and get much done, same for most traditional MMOs. WoW turned that on it's head.

TMT has a point about popularity not equaling good. Maria Carey passed Elvis for hit singles or w/e and I think she sucks. I also think Elvis sucks but that's not important really. ;)

Kugyince
05-10-2010, 06:44 PM
So lessening the learning curve for an MMO means it deserves to be ranked as the best game of the decade?

Dudebro
05-10-2010, 07:40 PM
I think making it more user friendly and gaining millions of fans makes it deserving of the top 10. What makes it deserve the number one is how smart the devs were in making a game that appeals to pretty much everyone. All ages, any time constraints, any level of gaming skill. The only complaint I hear is from the hardcore MMO people who say it's too easy. For them I bet it is, but WoW has an unreal amount of content that would be missed by burning through the game as fast as possible.

I feel weird defending this game since I've never even played it. I just don't see how anyone can deny how big of an impact WoW has had on gaming and culture in general. Pretty much everyone knows about WoW by now. It's a household name.

Kugyince
05-10-2010, 07:58 PM

We disagree on both of these points.

The same thing could be said of Wii Sports but I wouldn't want it on this list either.

Dudebro
05-10-2010, 08:10 PM
Well besides just the sales figures you can't deny it's impact on society.

samejamesbond

They even made a South Park episode on WoW.

Kugyince
05-10-2010, 08:37 PM

Again, as with Wii Sports.

They even made a South Park episode on WoW.

They made two South Park episodes on Wii Sports is what a quick Google search told me.

Again, I don't want Wii Sports on the list. I'm simply using it as an example.

samejamesbond

World of Warcraft made more money than Wii Sports.

Dudebro
05-10-2010, 08:40 PM

Well it's hard to deny the impact of the Wii and it's featured titles. I wouldn't count Sports though since it's bundled with the system. WiiFit might be a better example.

Kugyince
05-10-2010, 09:00 PM

I thought you were basing Wii Sports stature on sales alone.

jim5cents
05-10-2010, 09:13 PM
so, we will use wii fit for the argument.

it (wii fit) has brought a ton of new gamers to the table that might not have otherwise been exposed to gaming.
wow has brought a ton of new gamers to the table that might not have otherwise been exposed to mmo's

so what is the difference?

also, if you are going to put an mmo on the list, it has to be wow. this list concerns the decade 2000-09. everquest (aka rat hunter 3D) was in the 90's.

it is a game that has a huge following, is fun, and most importantly imo, has transended pop culture, whether you are talking about south park, mr. t, jeopardy questions, or ...YouTube - Leeroy Jenkins

Kugyince
05-10-2010, 09:31 PM
Wii Fit basically created a new genre. You can argue gimmicks like the Power Pad but you'd fail for even attempting it.

WoW created nothing new.

WiiFit is in schools, doctor's offices, used in physical therapy and other parts of the health profession. There's even one in the White House.

Dudebro
05-11-2010, 12:51 AM

samejamesbond
05-11-2010, 09:01 AM

Kong
05-11-2010, 09:34 AM
if you are going to put an mmo on the listAnd I think you have to. If MMO was not the most popular genre of the decade it was close.

However I think Flash games might have been the most played game type of the decade. Maybe one of them would at least deserve an honorable mention.

Kugyince

Demon-Mask
05-12-2010, 06:17 PM
Yes, good point Tenser, you don't need to be able to produce something better to form a negative opinion.

Example:
I don't think Halo is particularly enjoyable, but I cannot make a better game, so that makes my opinion invalid? Of course, according to a good portion of people, my dislike of Halo is invalid because so many people liked it.

Dudebro
05-12-2010, 06:19 PM

Kugyince

Kugyince

If a game is good, it doesn't need to be new, but if something is supposedly so great, I'd expect more than the tired, old formula that's been around since before Doom. Like I've said in some thread here, sometime:

Halo is merely a good game.
(I probably also compared it to other things I think are overrated like The Beatles, Double Dragon and Solid Snake)

TrakMastaTom

Oh, you're insinuating that I shouldn't form a negative opinion of someone else's list because I can not make one of my own? If so that's a very, very stupid point.

No, my point is that if your list would be lame, how would you recognize a good list, and what qualifications do you have to say WOW doesn't belong at number 1? You said yourself that if it was up to you it would be lame.

My point is what do you know? :)

Kugyince
05-13-2010, 04:02 AM
You're still saying the same exact thing no matter how you phrase it. So basically since I haven't played every single A title I should just roll over and accept it.

If your movie would be lame, how could you recognize a good movie, and what qualifications do you have to say what movie should be #1?

"Oh, FOX news said all the republicans are right and all the democrats are wrong. Since I can't create a better newscast myself it must be true!"

What happens when there's two conflicting lists? Should I automatically believe both are true since I'm not allowed to question the choices made on either or does the latter list super cede the prior?

TrakMastaTom

You asked me if I could make a better list. I said no because I don't own a 180, 360, PS2, PS3, or GC. (I have not questioned any games listed on those systems.)

You then came back and said that I wasn't allowed to critique the list because I couldn't make a better one. I, of course, mocked this opinion as retarded.

I went with GTA 3. Of the games on this list, I'd say it's the best for when it came out and what you could do in it. I used the game as more of a nick-nack then a game though, as in all I did was hop in a car and try to find all the super sweet jumps, this alone was enough to make it funner than any other game on the list for me. That being said, my top ten list would not have a single game that this one does.

Never played Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Half-Life 2 or Metroid Prime. Only played a very brief amount of Shadow of the Colossus, not enough to make any kind of judgment.

Devil May Cry is awesome, but I really don't think it was one of the best games of the decade. Halo isn't the worst game ever, but I didn't like it all too much. I didn't like Resident Evil 4, it was a case of completely changing a series that didn't need changing. GTA III is alright, but more for a quick burst here and there, not a good story, bad targeting, iffy controls. World of Warcraft is more along the lines of "worst games of the decade", along with just about every other MMO I've played.

Needless to say, I voted other.

I think Metal Gear Solid 3 should have been on the list. Yeah, yeah I know, I sound like a broken record with the Metal Gear thing. Interesting survival gameplay, well executed controls, a good story and so on make for a good game.

I also think The World Ends With You should have been on this list, but no one can stand a JRPG that isn't called "Final Fantasy", or one that isn't part of a series, or has new mechanics. Everyone always whines about how overdone turn-based battles are, then about how overly complex anything new is.

I have to disagree, GoldenEye changed the way we game as far as FPS and made it mainstream, WoW is out because 2/3 of the players ( Millions Around The World ) are mostly younger than 14!! Id say the main games that have had an impact over the past decade have been GTA Series, CoD Series and ALL of the Guitar Hero Submissions!

Golden Eye is over-rated. Doom deserves 90% of the credit for the FPS genre.

Nah you have to give credit where it's due. Golden Eye and Perfect Dark really helped the FPS genre take off, on consoles. I think it was mainly because of the fun multiplayer. Doom had multiplayer too but it was more raw, less variety.

Yes, but Doom mapped out how it's done. All the heavy lifting was done by Carmak. It's like a guy who dredged through a thick jungle with a machete, and everyone else just followed his path.

There's no arguing what Doom did for the genre. My point is GE and PD improved the path and got more people to take it.

Point taken, however in no way should Goldeneye be held in higher regard then Doom.

Thousands of people, probably millions, all over the world.

Oh so you mean anecdotal "evidence" like gamefaqs polls? Ok then I got my own anecdote, I've never heard/read anyone making that claim. I guess we cancel each other out?

Dudebro

My point is I've never seen that to be true. Doom is widely recognized as the father of modern FPS games. Or mother, w/e.

My point is that Doom does not get the respect it deserves, watch the videos, and see if you have any new found respect for it.

So this list gets to be based on entirely historical influence or does quality of the game in question counts? Because while great games tend to be the starters of important trends they aren't always the best games in their respective genre that were spawned during that decade.

@Steven- So you want me to watch those videos(which I've already seen) to get a better appreciation for a game I already called the father and/or mother of modern FPS? I don't get it.

@Bentley- I'm not sure how Gametrailers decided on these but I think most of us agree they didn't do a great job.

Doom is a classic with fun, on the fly combat. It's very enjoyable and was the foundation on which ID Software made games like Quake. I don't need to watch some documentary of the developers to know that.

For christs sake, are you guys dense? For the third time I will repeat myself: "I don't think Doom gets the credit it deserves" Is that such a hard concept to grasp?

I think I might just have to settle out of the conversation with "I don't get it."

You seem volley back and forth between the ideas that "People don't respect Doom." and "We don't respect Doom." whenever anyone addresses either idea.

I'm given to believe that you're trolling right now, but at the same time I could believe that you really are this convinced that everyone else is short sighted.

"I don't get it."

I never once suggested either: "People don't respect Doom." and "We don't respect Doom." Where do you see me saying that?

So again, for the fourth time now I will repeat myself, "I don't think Doom gets the credit it deserves", how can you not understand that? Stop trying to attribute other factors to it, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Well maybe you should stop listening to gamefaqs opinions? I always see Doom and Wolfenstein credited over stuff like goldeneye.

I just did a couple google searches and 99% of the FPS lists have Doom and Wolfenstein on there. Goldeneye too but for console only reasons.

The only time I ever go to Gamefaqs is for a faq/walkthrough if I ever get stuck in a game. My opinion is not based on anything specific, just my own intuition based on the data I have retained over the last 20 years. I know that Doom does get a ton of credit, but I don't think the average gamer has a good understanding of just how incredible of an accomplishment it was.
