It's funny how Nintendo threw all this out the window and broke their own rules when MK II was released on SNES, and they realized much coin could be purloined. :)

Yeah, It was a smart move by Nintendo to break their own rules at that time. Violence in video games was huuuge, really for me and my buddies being 14 or 15 at the time it was everything. Being before the age of internet, MK and a few other fighting games, were pretty much our only resource to see that kinda awsome stuff.
