I moved this to "all other games", debate is for non game related stuff.
I haven't played any of these games but I think Dantes Inferno is probably the better rip off.

Easily Dante's Inferno.
But there are much beter hack and slashes:
Devil May Cry 4
Bayonetta
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Dark Siders
Tails

It's becoming the norm for VG debates, no?
Never played em so I don't have much to add than what I already did.

I wouldn't agree with the term rip-off, if they are, then god of war is a rip-off of some long forgotten hack 'n slash.

In terms of God of War clones specifically, I think Dante's Inferno and Conan are the best that I have played. Each takes a somewhat different approach.
Actually, I prefer the combo system in Conan over both God of War and Dante's Inferno because 1) Conan is more brutal and 2) I found myself using a bigger variety of combos in Conan instead of the 2-3 in Dante's Inferno and God of War.

Drop the four there, it's better this way.

Yeah. A very under appreciated gem.

Twin Galaxies called Devil May Cry 4 the best Hack 'n Slash ever.
Demon-Mask

Yeah, and Twin Galaxies must decide what has the makings of greatness too, they are the ones that decided that water is necessary for life and that kittens are cute.
All joking and sarcasm aside:
What made Devil May Cry truly great in my opinion was the fact that it was new, Dante was new, and the Resident Evil goes Hack n' Slash feel was relatively new.

Oh, if you add "And Brutus is an honorable man." to the end of the first paragraph of my last phrase, it would make more sense.

Devil May Cry 4 had all of that, plus Nero to mix things up.
Edit: "Et Tu Brutus?"

So it was an entirely new game that came out of nowhere. I don't really like Nero much.

I didn't say he was horrible, I just don't think he stood up to the standards Dante set for the series.

While I agree NAFTA has some flaws, we need to get back on topic about
Devil May Cry 4 being the best in the series.

i read the other thread that brought up the nero/dante thing...played dmc1 and dmc4...i thought the only difference was in the animation.
if you really want to start with the rip-off ideas, consider this...one of the biggest contributing factors of the video game crash in the 1980's was that games weren't copyrighted, and that every title had a slight programming change, but was basically a rip off. rip offs flooded the market, supply was greater than demand...crash.
for a bit more modern, one could argue that all games that feature a "cut scene" is a rip off of ninja gaiden.

General rule today:
Movie/TV Games = suck 80% of the time.
So I would assume both yet I can't know for sure. Movie and TV games are a rip off today and are just things generally for people to get excited over since they liked the movie or show. Especially little kids. At least today, I can name way more great TV/Movie games from 2D consoles.
I do say generally. I'm aware of some good movie/TV games today but I avoid them all.

Dante's Inferno is not based off of a movie or TV show. It's based off of a book.

throw books in my comment too. Same idea.

How many games based on books are out there?
---------- Post added at 06:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:30 AM ----------
I really don't think your reasoning applies here. The reason TV show and movie games always suck is because they are frequently low budget, rushed, and put out just to build hype for their TV show or movie and make money off of the people who really liked the movie/TV show and will buy a game version of it.
Dante's Inferno was not low budget. Nor was it rushed. Nor is it a ploy to sell the book or make money off of people who loved the book. At least not strictly.
I've never played the game but I've heard it's kind of cool.

Retro Uprising - Arcade - Bible Adventures (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/442/)

Dante's Inferno is not based off of a movie or TV show. It's based off of a book.
But how closely does it follow Dante's classic poem? I cannot imagine how they got from the poem to the game.

Not that hard, it's a story about Dante fighting his way through the 7 circles of hell to save his loved one.
You just fill in the blanks.
Demon-Mask

Nine circles in the poem. The circles of hell are not represented in the same way. Dante is guided by a poet called Virgil in the poem. Dante is simply trying to get out of hell in the poem.
And finally, the poem is much better than the game could ever hope to be. The poem is great and the game looks like it is just above average.
To each his own though, I doubt most people prefer Italian epic poems from the fourteenth century over hack n' slash games.
How many games based on books are out there?.There are several Bible games + Left Behind, Lord of the Rings, Hary Potter, Wheel of Time. There isn't as many as movies but there are some more.

DM, Virgil plays a very nice role as the guide in the game as well.
Personally, I think it was a brilliant idea to base a game on Dante's work.
Since the story was divided into distinct sections, there is a perfect built in game trilogy as well.
Just because it isn't the original Poem doesn't mean that a game can't work. I think it works very well.
I'm still waiting on that Atlas Shrugged game, though. Maybe one day. :p

I know, I'm just pointing out some difference I saw. To be honest, the original poem would have made a fairly bland game, you'd just be on foot, walking around unarmed, with Virgil, and if I remember correctly, you wouldn't fight the devil in the end.
It's good that they used Virgil.

Yeah, I think they struck a nice balance of incorporating many elements from the poem but also keeping it a fun game as well.
