...we’re discussing the love or hate of difficult games. Do you have games that you love because of how tough they are, or are you the type to walk away from a punishing experience? Or are there games that you feel are difficult but not in a punishing manner?

I love shooting games (not FPS) precisely because of how hard they are, beating defeat an intentionally unfair challenge gives you the best feeling in the world. The arcade version of Gradius III is the hardest game I have ever played, beating it was an amazing adventure that I still experience everytime I watch my own replay.

The only downside to this is that when I beat such a game, I never really play it ever again. They're good, but once they're defeated they have pretty much no replay value for me anymore.

Some games I have walked away from because of difficulty, like Ghosts 'n Goblins, but some
like Castlevania, I kept pressing myself to move foward.

I used to hate Zelda II because it was too hard, but now that I have beaten it I love it.

If it's an rpg, I like some challenge because if im gonna play that type of game for that many hours, a walk in the park isn't what i want.
Then you have games like nsmb wii, it's a really easy game, but the funfactor doesn't lie its challenge, it lies in cruising around and bouncing off koopas and stuff. I guess I could kinda compare it to skateboarding, sure just pushing your self along will get you to the finish line, but it's alot more fun if your pulling stunts the whole way.
