I wanna start this by sayin i by no means have any control of this site. I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way as i do.
Do you think the saturn is Retro?
I personally do and would love to play saturn games on here. Especially virtual Fighter and Virtual Cop.

For stuff to be here, the last thing made for said system must of been out of production for 10 years. There's also the issue that some stuff is too big for the net and cannot be held on the server.

They've made stuff for saturn in the last ten years? Well other than that would the saturn stuff be too big?
I remember it was one of my favourite systems and i think it got a bum rap and was underated, byut thats just me.

Just thinking of it, (Kong would have a better idea than me) it would feel Saturn might be too much for RU.

Pm me stuff you don't know about and I will try to guide you in the right way. ;)
Our definition of retro is stuff that hasn't been made new for over 10 years.
Example GBC was made in 1998 - over 10 years ago but GBC continued to make new games until 2012 so by our definition it is not retro.
The last Sega Saturn game was Finial Fight Revenge March 30, 2000. So it became retro last week. Congratulations Sega Saturn :cake:
But it is still too big for online. No CDs on RU.

Its a buy, sell or trade type buisness. But i just cant seem to find a saturn there. On the plus side i'm 11 days from my birthday and i've been told theres a genesis comin my way. Heres hopin.

Moved to All other games since this is game related. In the future just remember that if it's game related at all it goes in All games, if it's on RU it's in RU games. It's not a big deal to move it but it saves time and reduces any confusion.
As for the topic, I never understood the big deal about the Saturn. I played one and I wasn't that impressed by anything. It wasn't awful but it didn't seem that great either.

PS1 has to be one of my most hated consoles of all time. Saturn is definitely better. Just saying, if you played it once then you probably didn't play many of the great games on it, just some mediocre ones.

My god cam you need to stop saying stupid stuff like that. PS1 had countless awesome games, name one awesome game for Saturn and I'm sure I wouldn't like it. It was a failure of a system and it's nothing compared to PS1, sorry but it's true.

I personally dont see the Saturn as a failure. When I first got a saturn I had the choice between that and playstation and I was completely happy with my choice. One game that I can bring up that was fantastic to play was I thiink called Knights. Not sure. But wonderul action adventure and I think a little puzzle thrown in.
Sega Cd might be considered a failur but Saturn is up there in my book.
Had a dreamcast too. Wasn't as good but still definetely playable. Crazy Taxi was awesome on that. But I am a hardcore die hard Sega fan.
Noit to say I dont like PS1 Cause I loved it too, but i prefer Saturn
ua Cop was fun and Virtua Fighter was awesome on that console as well.

Slightly off topic but still about saturn, does anyone know that game I was talking about(knights or something.) You fly around as this little Jester Doll type thing and I just cant remember more, I remember the graphics and gameplay were awesome though. Really a fun game. One of the main reasons I wish this site could host a saturn platform.

I was talking to tails about this poll. I'd like to do it in four rounds
1) Sonic Versu Mario
2) Kirby Versus Yoshi
3)Ryu Hayabusha Versus Axel
4)Link Versus Marth.
What do you think. How could I do a multi poll?
I loved the 3do.
So why do you think the Saturn never took off? Short life span obviously hurt it but what caused that? Marketing?

Me too. I love 3DO.
I think some of it was Sega was releasing consoles too quickly. They were the first to utilize whatever new tech would come out, but then then system would become outdated when other companies would release their systems. It was almost like they kept trying to emulate the strategy of the Genesis (first mainstream 16 bit system, even though it wasn't the first 16 bit system), but the strategy didn't keep working.
GaMeR_mAn_1

I think that must have had alot to do with it, but I also think alot to do with it had to do with timing maybe? If I remember right it launched around the same time as playstation. And playstation was Heavily advertised so i think it mighta just got shoved to the background.

I think it was the first to have 16 bit cpu, graphics and sound all in one.
You can't call graphics and sound '16-bit' or whatever, that distinction only matters for the main CPU.
For example, the Genesis has a 16-bit Motorola 68000 as the main CPU and an 8-bit Z80 CPU that runs both the Yamaha FM synthesis chip and the PSG from the Master System. The graphics unit on the Genesis can only display colors from a 9-bit colorspace (3 bits for red, green, blue each).

Saturn is better than Ps1. no doubt in my mind. Ps1 was good Only thanks to monster rancher and A coupe other games. Saturn and dream cast tookt hem out. In fact Ps1 even went so far as to take some of the Saturn games and port them over. ((EX Gex and tomb raider were on saturn first I think..)
Saturn also won for having a port of a game that become a Better on the saturn than it was on the ps1.. Symphony of the night. I have paid alot of attention ot the elgish adaptations of My FAVE japanise video game and.. Saturn wins hands down. Not just because of Maria being playable.. but the Saturn version just looks more complete and BETTER in my opinion. Sega saturn was also excellent for its Strange awesome games.
Example include mister bones, Burning rangers, three dirty dwarves, and the Ever awesome SCUD the disposable assassin. If youwant further proof of the Saturns Incredible ability look at all the Ports the PS got of Saturn games back in japan! Games like Dragon force and panzer dragoon were RE released for that system Later on!
Now Ill admit the Ps hd some good games.. such as Final fantasy 7, twisted metal, and the monster rancher series. But Saturn owns.. period. The only Advantage the PS and nintendo had.. was that the SEGA company actually took thier time creating GOOD games.. I mean hell look at Nights into dreams! I cant even imagine all the work it tok ot make that HUGE 3d game!
((YEs its 3d.. you can explore hte whole levels as a kid.. and interact.. Thus its 3d.. TADA))
well anyway.. once I have a place for it. Im gonna be happy to hook up the saturn and bask in the light of Super Puzzle fighter 2 turbo and Baku Baku again..

You can't call graphics and sound '16-bit' or whatever, that distinction only matters for the main CPU.Sound cards and graphic cards can also be measured in bits. Intellivision was the first 16bit Cpu console. Turbo Grafx-16 was the first 16bit Gpu console. Genesis was the first 16bit Cpu and 16bit Gpu console. I looked it up genesis had an 8bit sound card.
Even though Intellivision and Genesis both had 16 bit CPUs it isn't a great comparison because the Genesis CPU was nearly 1,000 times faster.

not to mention Saturn has the best port of Theme Park, I want that one back so bad. All the other ports allowed you to get a max of like 50 guests, and the guests were incredibly stupid at that. The saturn port added way more functions and you could get like 500 guests! They weren't stupid either, here comes PS1 porting the Saturn Theme park and waters it down.

How do you decide that a GFX or sound unit is '16-bit'? CPUs get their bit width decided by the size of the opcodes they execute, but GPUs and sound cards don't execute any opcodes from an external ROM.

What really ticks me off is that with a rumer I heard alogn time ago, about ps3 getting Dream cast Downloadable games. ITs like The coolest system OUT there, and that Id play regularly (If I could hook it up right now I would.) just got jipped or jumped! I mean come on! Your going form genesis games to dreamcast? wtf is so wrong with Porting Saturn games over? Is it just that the saturn was too awesome to ever be ported out?
I mean yeah sonic gems got sonic R.. but thats like.. the only Saturn game thats been ported out here in the states! Id litterally kill for an oppertuunity to play Dark savior, panzer dragoon, Bug, or any of those old games again! YEah yeha 'I know.. "use E-bay" but look at the GAME prices for some of those? Hell some copies are labeled under collecters items!
"Alright sir, why do you want to buy this Mint perfect edition of panzer dragoon?"
"Uh.. to play the game.. why else?"
"EH GASP you want to PLAY a game you bought?"
"Isn't that.. kinda the point of getting the game? to play it?"
I mean why do people even do that? buy games they never actually WANT to play? Its stupid and mean... to us actual RETRO gamers out here..

Don't they know that you and like five other people think it's the bestest system?! I mean jeez it has like 10 decent games on it and everything. :sarcastic:
@Belmontzar- Do you ever think that the reason they ported Saturn games to the PS1 is because Saturn wasn't going anywhere? What game maker wants to go down with the ship? Also maybe they skipped the Saturn because only a small group of people care about any of the games on that system? You act like Saturn is this awesome console that people are somehow overlooking. It's just not worth bothering with the Saturn because hardly anyone would pay money to play it.

The VDP1 renders primitives to two 256 kB frame buffers that can be configured as 512x512x8 or 512x256x16 (Virtua Fighter 2 was the first game to use high resolution, at 60 frame/s on Consoles). Having two frame buffers allows double buffering of the display and provides more time for rendering. The active framebuffer is read out to the display by the VDP2, which can apply data from a coefficient table to modify the scanning process, for effects like rotation, scaling, and general distortion of the entire frame buffer as a single entity.
PS1 GPU
The GPU has a 2 kB texture cache.
The GPU has a unified 1 MB block of memory for the texture data and frame buffers. This allows for complex effects where the framebuffer is in turn applied as a texture again.
The framebuffer portion of the GPU RAM must be manually erased.
Commands are sent to the GPU via DMA, buffered in a FIFO, and executed in the order of being sent.
Saturn VDP1
The VDP1 has no texture cache.
VDP1 memory is split: 512 kB for texture data / command lists, 256 kB for one framebuffer and 256 kB for another.
The two frame buffers have a high-speed auto-erase feature.
Commands are stored in a linked list in RAM, multiple lists can be stored, the list can be processed by the VDP1 without wasting a DMA channel.
Reason for failure:The Sega Saturn, although the most technically advanced console of the generation, suffered from poor marketing and comparatively limited third-party support.
It still remains my favourite over playstation. It was also the first systerm to use a "net link" with a modem for online gaming and such, spurring other companies to include in later models.

I would give it another go. It really is worth it. 3D flight simulation is amazing on the system. I really enjoy this console. Another reason they failed is they pushed its relese date four months early and in effect it caused sony when they released PS1 to drop their prices where saturn ended releasing for $100 more than the PS1. In summation Saturn failed not because the system was inferior, it only failed due to bad buisness decisions.

Well I do my comparison through actual gameplay and merits of the system, rather than who made the most money. In the japanese market saturn was superior to PS1. I'm not sayin I didnt love the PS1, I'm just sayin Saturn was an awesome system. I bet If I gave you a list of Games and you played them with an open mind, you'd recognize some of the merits of the Saturn.

Lots of copy paste from Wikipedia.

It still remains my favourite over playstation. It was also the first systerm to use a "net link" with a modem for online gaming and such, spurring other companies to include in later models.
If you'd read the rest of the Wikipedia article you would have also seen that the Saturn hardware was a total mess. You basically forgot the entire page above "Saturn Models" which lists all of the disadvantages of the Saturn.
Does any game use the net link at all? It's cool to have it on the console but pretty pointless if nothing uses it. If anything, it only increases the cost.
Also, history has shown that usually the most technically advanced console never wins.
The following is quoted from another post I made:
NES vs. Sega Master System - SMS was clearly superior technologically, yet NES wins by landslide.
Gameboy (black and white) vs. Everything else (Game Gear and others) - Gameboy has only 4 shades of gray to display, stomps all other competitors anyways. Ancient custom 8-bit Z80 processor inside developed in 1989, suffices for games until 2000.
Nintendo DS vs. Sony PlayStationPortable - DS came in with just barely above PS1 level graphics, yet beats the PSP which can compare with PS2 games. Still alive today in the face of ever stronger competitors like iPhone. Is on track to become best selling videogame system ever.
Saturn vs. N64 vs PS1 - N64 has faster CPU, more memory, higher polygon count, but programming complexities and disk space issues give PS1 a landslide victory. Saturn flounders with overly complex hardware, fails miserably.
Gamecube vs. PS2 and Xbox - PS2 came out first with weaker hardware, Gamecube and Xbox come out a year later with stronger guts, PS2 games are still being released today, Gamecube and Xbox abandoned as soon as successor consoles are released.
Wii vs. PS3 vs. Xbox360 - Wii wins with barely a graphical/CPU upgrade and some motion tech, winning over casual market. Competitors, which before had focused only on "hardcore" attempting to capture said market by developing own motion tech. Recently became Nintendo's best selling home console system ever, surpassing the NES. Victory shows that "hardcore" systems cannot be supported by "hardcore" players only.
I don't have anything against the Saturn, I love playing Radiant Silvergun, but pasting a random paragraph from Wikipedia does not make a good post =P. Do you even know what all of those numbers mean?

Have you seen the Hand Held genesis. I never knew it existed until today. I wonder if its superior to the Game Gear. And yes I copies from wikipedia but mostly because I didnt have exact specs..
I certainly wasn't tryin to offend anyone by posting from wikipedia.
I saw a side by side comparison and thought uit would be interesting to post them and [people can make their own conclusion from that.
I still prefer Saturn gameplay versus PS1 and I have nothing against PS1 and there arwe some titles that use the net link but I'd hqave to do some research on the matter, but yet again I wasn't tryin to convince anyone that it was original work by me, like I said I like the comparison and I wanted to bring it to attwention. Its the first side by side like that that I had found.

Well I do my comparison through actual gameplay and merits of the system, rather than who made the most money. .
Who made the most money isn't important. I'm saying the PS1 is better because it has a huge library of games. I never claimed it was technically better, I honestly don't care about that. For me a console should be judged on the games it has. What good is an awesome console with garbage games? I'm not saying Saturn games are garbage but they certainly aren't notable.
Sorry if I sound so negative about this but if I'm forced to choose I'll pick the PS1 everytime. Even if I played and enjoyed a bunch of games on the saturn, still PS1.
Everyone has different experiences. PS1 was something that my friends and I played countless cool games on. It's just a damn good system for games. They're ugly now but there was nothing like it at the time. To be honest Saturn was a joke to me back then. I played it, it had no games I was interested in, a couple months later I never heard of it again. None of my friends bought one, failure. Sorry again for bashing it, nothing personal. ;)

Well everyone does have different [personal experiences which makes a particular console more enjoyable to them.
Me and my brother spent countless hours on the saturn to lots of really cool games that we liked. Hell its where I first fell in love with Lara Croft. My first resident evil experience, I just have lots of good memories on the saturn and I particularly was blown away by it. It was just suchja good time and I throughly enjoyed playing games Like Bug and clock work knight. Panzer dragoon. Several games I really liked. Not to say Ps1 didnt because Twisted metal is still one of my favourite games to this day.

I talked with mom and have come to the conclusion that hte REAL reason most saturn games are not going to be rerelased as downloadable games, are because they are simply too large file size. Dream cast, while updated, had disks that had less memory on them. Makign them easier to Port or even to add onto a compliation game. Hence why dreamcast games might beocme DLC games. In short Saturn games are just too large file size. As for market potential. Hell yeah Saturn has a $#*^ load of fans out there who WOULD pay BIG money to play those games again. there is NOway anyone can deny the market for games lik Burning rangers, Nights into dreams, or even the smaller games like Bug. teh fan hordes are huge out there.. heck bigger than Dream cast Even I think.. I also did more lookign up adn saw I had a fact wrong.. Saturn games were nto ported to Ps1. the were ported to PS2, not ps1.
EXample..

If you look up teh SEGA Ages collection you will find HUGE amounts of Saturn games ported to the Ps2. So there is not denying hte market These games DO infact have, at least in japan. Im sure a similar market is in for those games out here in the states.. if they could get the Licensing.
Lets be honest.. No saturn gamer out there, if they saw THIS in their Store would resist it

Yeah alotta Saturns game with a Demo disk for nights into dreams. I dont have my saturn anymore but I have these four games. I'm plannin on gettin one as soon as I can as well as a genesis and maybe even the Sega Cd. On ebay I saw the most comprehensive collection ever.(SMS Genesis, Game Gear, Genesis Handheld, Saturn Dreamcast, 32x, and like every game ever made for each system. Guy wanted 680 but I bet it would be worth it if you had the money you know. I wish I could figure out how to run an emulator so I can play these four games.

I don't have nights... I have Need For Speed and Doom on Saturn right now. I'm starting to think Theme Park is still buried away somewhere since my brother pawned the saturn but I immediately phoned a few days later and the guy didn't have the game and no one had bought Saturn stuff since then.

Nitpicker's note: Radiant Silvergun is a Saturn game, and it's on here in arcade form. Additionally, the arcade board (the Sega ST-V) the arcade version used was based on the Saturn hardware, so it made ports between the two easy.

The Saturn and the ST-V arcade board are the same, the only difference is that ST-V can run off of cartridges, a CD unit is optional.
