If you want to shock the hell out of some kids, travel back in time to the '80s and tell a bunch of young gamers that Double Dragon will cease to be a relevant game series by the mid-'90s.
That's not to say Technos' beat-'em-up property is unknown or reviled in the present day. But considering its rabid popularity through the '80s, it's strange to think that the series hasn't evolved with gaming consoles as an automatic alternative for anyone who wants to stomp Abobo's head instead of a Goomba's. Instead, we subsist on our memories of a time when Double Dragon dominated arcades, was ported to every available console and computer (even the Atari 2600!), and warmed up parents' disapproval prior to the Mortal Kombat Freak-Out of 1993.
Double Dragon even had a place in pop culture. It was given props in what is arguably the most ridiculous moment in the 1989 film, "The Wizard:" Corey discovers that his withdrawn younger brother, Jimmy, has a special talent for video games after the youngster racks up an inconceivable score on the game.
